HOMILY OF THE HOLY FATHER LEO XIV, Holy Mass - the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, Jubilee of Sport, Saint Peter's Basilica, at 10:00 a.m., Sunday, 15 June 2025

Dear brothers and sisters, In the first reading we heard these words: “Thus says the wisdom of God: The Lord possessed me, the beginning of his ways, the forerunner of his prodigies of long ago … When the Lord established the heavens I was there … then was I beside him as his craftsman, and I was his delight day by day, playing before him all the while, playing on the surface of his earth; and I found delight in the human race” (Prov 8: 22, 27, 30-31) For Saint Augustine, the Trinity and wisdom are intimately connected. Divine wisdom is revealed in the Most Holy Trinity, and wisdom always leads us to truth.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 제1독서에서 우리는 다음과 같은 말씀을 들었습니다. “하느님 지혜의 말씀이다: 주님께서는 그 옛날 모든 일을 하시기 전에 당신의 첫 작품으로 나를 지으셨다.... 그분께서 하늘을 세우실 때, 심연 위에 테두리를 정하실 때 나 거기 있었다. 나는 그분 곁에서 사랑받는 아이였다. 나는 날마다 그분께 즐거움이었고 언제나 그분 앞에서 뛰놀았다. 나는 그분께서 지으신 땅 위에서 뛰놀며 사람들을 내 기쁨으로 삼았다.” (잠언 8, 22, 27, 30-31) 성 아오스딩에게 삼위일체와 지혜는 밀접하게 연결되어 있습니다. 하느님 지혜는 지극히 거룩한 삼위일체 안에서 드러나며 지혜는 항상 우리를 진리로 이끕니다.

While we are celebrating today the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, we are also marking the Jubilee of Sport. This combination of Trinity and Sport is somewhat unusual, yet the juxtaposition is not inappropriate. Every good and worthwhile human activity is in some way a reflection of God’s infinite beauty, and sport is certainly one of these. For God is not immobile and closed in on himself, but activity, communion, a dynamic relationship between the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, which opens up to humanity and to the world. Theologians speak of perichoresis: the life of God is a kind of “dance”: a dance of mutual love.

오늘 우리는 지극히 거룩하신 삼위일체 대축일과 스포츠의 희년을 함께 기념하고 있습니다. 삼위일체와 스포츠의 이러한 결합은 다소 이례적이지만, 나란히 놓는 것이 부적절하지는 않습니다. 모든 선하고 가치 있는 인간 활동은 어떤 면에서 하느님의 무한한 아름다움을 반영하며, 스포츠는 분명 그러한 아름다움 중 하나입니다. 하느님께서는 요지부동이 아니시고, 자신에 갇혀 계시지도 않고, 오히려 성부, 성자, 성령 사이의 활동과 친교로서 인류와 세상에 열려있는 역동적인 관계이시기 때문입니다. 신학자들은 페리코레시스 (perichoresis: doctrine of trinity) 를 얘기합니다. 하느님의 삶은 일종의 “댄스”: 상호 사랑의 춤입니다.

This dynamism of God’s inner life gives birth to life. We were created by a God who finds joy in giving existence to his creatures, who “delights” in our world, as  we heard in the first reading (cf. Prov 8:30-31). Some Fathers of the Church go so far as to speak of a Deus ludens, a God who “plays” (cf. SAINT SALONIUS OF GENEVA, In Parabolas Salomonis expositio mystica; SAINT GREGORY NAZIANZEN, Carmina, I, 2, 589). Sport can thus help us to encounter the Triune God, because it challenges us to relate to others and with others, not only outwardly but also, and above all, interiorly. Otherwise, sport becomes nothing more than an empty competition of inflated egos.

하느님의 내적 삶의 이 역동성은 생명을 낳습니다. 피조물에게 생명을 주는 데서 기쁨을 찾으시는 하느님께서 우리를 창조하셨습니다. 그 하느님께서는 제1독서에서 들었듯이 우리 세상에서 기뻐하십니다. (잠언 8,30-31 참조) 교회의 어떤 교부들은 “놀이하시는” 하느님 즉 데우스 루덴스 (Deus Ludens) 라고까지 말합니다. Here in Italy, spectators at sporting events often cheer athletes on by shouting out, “Dai!” (Come one!). The Italian word, however, means, literally, “Give!” This can give us cause to reflect. Sports are not only about physical achievements, however extraordinary, but also about giving of ourselves, putting ourselves “in play”. It is about giving of ourselves for others – for our personal improvement, for our athletic supporters, for our loved ones, our coaches and colleagues, for the greater public, and even for our opponents. Being a “good sport” is more important than winning or not. Saint John Paul II – himself, as we know, a sportsman – put it this way: “Sport is joy of life, a game, a celebration. As such, it must be fostered... by recovering its sheer gratuity, its ability to forge bonds of friendship, to encourage dialogue and openness towards others... quite apart from the harsh laws of production and consumption and all other purely utilitarian and hedonistic approaches to life” (Homily for the Jubilee of Sports, 12 April 1984).

이탈리아에서 스포츠 경기 관람객들이 종종 "다이!"(다이!)를 외치며 선수들을 응원합니다. 하지만 이 이탈리아어 단어는 문자 그대로 "주다!"라는 뜻입니다. 이는 우리에게 성찰할 기회를 줍니다. 스포츠에서 중요한 것은 아무리 뛰어난 신체적 성취라도 그것뿐만 아니라 자신을 바치고 “경기에” 직접 참여하는 것입니다. 스포츠는 타인을 위해, 자신의 발전을 위해, 응원하는 사람들을 위해, 사랑하는 사람들, 코치와 동료를 위해, 많은 대중을 위해, 심지어 경쟁 상대를 위해 자신을 바치는 것입니다. "멋진 스포츠맨십"을 발휘하는 것은 승패보다 더 중요합니다. 우리가 알다시피 스포츠맨이셨던 성 요한 바오로 2세께서는 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “스포츠는 삶의 기쁨이며, 놀이이자 축제입니다. 따라서 스포츠는 순수한 무상성을 회복하고, 우정의 유대를 형성하는 능력과 대화와 타인에 대한 열린 마음을 북돋우는 능력을 회복함으로써 육성해야 합니다. 이는 생산과 소비의 가혹한 법칙, 그리고 삶에 대한 모든 다른 순전히 공리주의 적이고 쾌락주의적인 접근과는 매우 다른 것입니다.” (스포츠 희년 강론, 1984년 4월 12일)

From this standpoint, let us reflect on three particular things that make sport, nowadays, a precious means for training in human and Christian virtues.

이 관점에서, 오늘날 스포츠가 인간과 그리스도교적 덕목을 훈련하는 데 소중한 수단이 되게 하는 세 가지 특별한 것들에 대해 생각해 봅시다.

First, in a society marked by solitude, where radical individualism has shifted the emphasis from “us” to “me”, resulting in a deficit of real concern for others, sport – especially team sports – teaches the value of cooperating, working together and sharing. These, as we said, are at the very heart of God’s own life (cf. Jn 16:14-15). Sport can thus become an important means of reconciliation and encounter: between peoples and within communities, schools, workplaces and families.

첫째, 급진적인 개인주의로 인해 “우리”에서 “나”로 초점이 옮겨가 타인에 대한 진정한 관심이 부족한 고립 사회에서, 스포츠, 특히 팀 스포츠는 협력하고, 함께 일하고, 나누는 가치를 가르칩니다. 앞서 말했듯이, 이러한 것들은 하느님 삶의 핵심입니다. (요한 16,14-15 참조) 따라서 스포츠는 사람들 사이, 그리고 공동체, 학교, 직장, 가정 안에서의 화해와 만남의 중요한 수단이 될 수 있습니다.

Second, in an increasingly digital society, where technology brings distant people closer together, yet often creates distances between those who are physically close, sport proves a valuable and concrete means of bringing individuals together, providing a healthier sense of the body, of space, effort and real time. It counters the temptation to escape into virtual worlds and it helps to preserve a healthy contact with nature and with real life, where genuine love is experienced (cf. 1 Jn 3:18).

둘째, 점점 더 디지털화 되는 사회에서, 기술은 멀리 있는 사람들을 더 가깝게도 하지만 종종 물리적으로 가까운 사람들 사이에 거리를 만드는 경우가 많습니다. 스포츠는 개인들을 하나로 모으고, 신체, 공간, 노력, 실시간에 대한 더 건강한 감각을 제공하는 귀중하고 구체적인 수단임을 증명합니다. 그것은 가상 세계로 탈출하고 싶은 유혹을 물리치고, 자연과, 진정한 사랑을 체험하는 실제 삶과의 건강한 접촉을 보존하는 데 도움이 됩니다. (요한 1서 3,18 참조)

Third, in our competitive society, where it seems that only the strong and winners deserve to live, sport also teaches us how to lose. It forces us, in learning the art of losing, to confront one of the deepest truths of our human condition: our fragility, our limitations and our imperfections. This is important, because it is through the experience of these limits that we open our hearts to hope. Athletes who never make mistakes, who never lose, do not exist. Champions are not perfectly functioning machines, but real men and women, who, when they fall, find the courage to get back on their feet. Saint John Paul II hit the mark when he said that Jesus is “the true athlete of God” because he defeated the world not by strength, but by the fidelity of love (cf. Homily at the Mass for the Jubilee of Sportsmen and Sportswomen, 29 October 2000).

셋째, 강자와 승자만이 살아남을 자격이 있는 것처럼 보이는 우리 경쟁 사회에서 스포츠는 또한 우리에게 패배하는 법을 가르쳐 줍니다. 스포츠는 우리가 패배의 기술을 배우면서 인간 조건의 가장 깊은 진실 중 하나, 즉 우리의 연약함, 한계, 그리고 불완전함을 직시하게 합니다. 이것이 중요한 이유는 바로 이러한 한계를 경험함으로써 우리는 희망에 마음을 열기 때문입니다. 실수하지 않고, 절대 지지 않는 운동선수는 없습니다. 챔피언은 완벽하게 작동하는 기계가 아니라, 넘어졌을 때 다시 일어설 용기를 찾는 진짜 사람입니다. 성 요한 바오로 2세께서도 예수님께서 힘이 아니라 충실한 사랑으로 세상을 이기셨기 때문에 “하느님의 진정한 운동선수”라고 말씀하심으로써 같은 핵심을 짚으셨습니다. It is no coincidence that sport has played a significant role in the lives of many saints in our day, both as a personal discipline and as a means of evangelization. We can think of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, the patron saint of athletes, who will be canonized later this year on 7 September. His straightforward and luminous life reminds us that, just as no one is born a champion, no one is born a saint. It is daily training in love that brings us closer to final victory (cf. Rom 5:3-5) and enables us to contribute to the building of a new world. Saint Paul VI also observed this, twenty years after the end of the Second World War, when he reminded the members of a Catholic athletic association how much sports had helped to restore peace and hope in a society devastated by the consequences of war (cf. Address to the members of the C.S.I., 20 March 1965). He went on to say: “Your efforts are directed at the formation of a new society..., in the recognition that sport, by virtue of the sound educational values it promotes, can be a most useful means for the spiritual elevation of the human person, the primary and indispensable condition for an orderly, peaceful and constructive society.”

스포츠가 오늘날 많은 성인들의 삶에서 개인적인 훈련과 복음화의 수단으로서 중요한 역할을 한 것은 우연이 아닙니다. 올해 9월 7일 시성될 운동선수들의 수호성인 복자 피에르 조르지오 프라사티를 생각해 볼 수 있습니다. 그의 솔직하고 빛나는 삶은, 누구도 챔피언으로 태어나지 않듯이 성인으로 태어나지도 않는다는 사실을 일깨워 줍니다. 매일 사랑으로 훈련하는 것이 우리를 최후의 승리에 더 가까이 데려가고 (로마 5,3-5 참조), 새로운 세상을 건설하는 데 기여할 수 있게 합니다. 성 바오로 6세 교황께서도 이것을 이해하시고, 제2차 세계 대전 종전 20년 후, 가톨릭 운동 협회 회원들에게 스포츠가 전쟁의 결과로 황폐해진 사회에 평화와 희망을 회복하는 데 얼마나 큰 도움이 되었는지 상기시키셨습니다. (1965년 3월 20일, C.S.I. 회원들에게 한 말씀 참조) 그는 이어서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “여러분의 노력은 새로운 사회의 형성을 목표로 하고 있습니다... 스포츠가 추구하는 건전한 교육적 가치 덕분에, 스포츠가, 질서 있고 평화로우며 건설적인 사회를 위한 기본적이고 필수적인 조건인, 인간의 정신적 고양을 위한 가장 유용한 수단이 될 수 있다는 인식에서입니다.”

Dear athletes, the Church entrusts you with a beautiful mission: to reflect in all your activities the love of the Triune God, for your own good and for that of your brothers and sisters. Carry out this mission with enthusiasm: as athletes, as trainers, as associations and groups, and within your families. Pope Francis liked to point out that the Gospel presents the Virgin Mary as ever active, on the move, even “running” (cf. Lk 1:39), ever ready, as mothers are, to set out at a sign from God to help her children (cf. Address to the Volunteers of World Youth Day, 6 August 2023). Let us ask her to accompany our effort and enthusiasm, and to guide it always toward the greatest victory of all: the prize of eternal life on that playing-field where games will never end and our joy will be complete (cf. 1 Cor 9:24-25; 2 Tim 4:7-8).

사랑하는 운동선수 여러분, 교회는 여러분에게 아름다운 사명을 맡깁니다. 바로 여러분 자신과 형제자매들의 선을 위해 모든 활동에서 삼위일체 하느님의 사랑을 반영하는 것입니다. 운동선수로서, 트레이너로서, 협회와 단체로서, 그리고 가정 안에서 이 사명을 열정적으로 수행하십시오. 프란치스코 교황님께서는 복음에서 동정 마리아를 다음과 같이 묘사한다고 말씀하시곤 하셨습니다. 동정 마리아께서 항상 활동적이시고, 항상 움직이시고, 심지어 “달리십니다.” (루카 1,39 참조) 그리고 다른 어머니들처럼 하느님의 표징에 따라 자녀들을 돕기 위해 떠날 준비가 되어 있으십니다. Dear brothers and sisters, good day!, We have just concluded the Eucharistic celebration for the Jubilee of Sport, and now I would like to say a word to all of you, athletes of every age and background. I encourage you always to participate in sports, including competitive sports, with a spirit of generosity, and to see them as “re-creation,” in the noblest sense, for by engaging in this wholesome pastime we in some sense resemble our Creator.

I think it is important to emphasize that sport is a means of building peace, since, as a training-ground of fairness and respect for others, it fosters a culture of encounter and fraternity. Sisters and brothers, I encourage you always to keep this in mind, opposing all forms of violence and bullying.

스포츠는 평화를 구축하는 수단이라는 것을 강조하는 것이 중요하다고 생각합니다. 공정성과 타인에 대한 존중의 훈련장으로서, 만남과 형제애의 문화를 조성하기 때문입니다. 자매 형제 여러분, 저는 여러분께 모든 형태의 폭력과 괴롭힘을 거부하는 것을 명심하시도록 권고합니다.

The world today is in need of this message. There is currently so much armed conflict. In Myanmar, fighting persists despite the ceasefire, causing damage also to civilian infrastructures. I invite all parties to engage in inclusive dialogue, the only path that can lead to a peaceful and enduring solution.

오늘날 세계는 이 메시지를 필요로 합니다. 현재 무력 충돌이 너무 많습니다. 미얀마에는 휴전에도 불구하고 전투가 계속되고 있으며, 민간 기반 시설에도 피해를 입히고 있습니다. 모든 당사자들이 평화롭고 지속 가능한 해결책으로 이어질 수 있는 유일한 길인 포용적인 대화에 참여하기를 촉구합니다.

During the night between 13 and 14 June, a terrible massacre took place in the city of Yelwata, located in the local administrative area of Gouman, in the state of Benue, Nigeria. Around two hundred people were killed with extreme cruelty. The majority of those killed were internally displaced people who were being housed at a local Catholic mission. I pray that security, justice and peace prevail in Nigeria, a beloved country that has suffered various forms of violence. I pray in particular for the rural Christian communities in the state of Benue, who have unceasingly been victims of violence.

6월 13일에서 14일 사이 밤, 나이지리아 베누에 주 구만 지역 행정구역에 위치한 옐와타 시에서 끔찍한 학살이 발생했습니다. 약 200명이 극도로 잔혹하게 살해당했습니다. 사망자 대부분은 지역 가톨릭 선교단에 머물던 국내 실향민이었습니다. 다양한 형태의 폭력으로 고통 받아 온 사랑하는 나이지리아에 안전과 정의, 그리고 평화가 깃들기를 기도합니다. 특히 끊임없이 폭력의 희생자가 되어 온 베누에 주의 농촌 기독교 공동체를 위해 기도합니다.

My thoughts also turn to the Republic of Sudan, torn apart by violence for over two years now. I was saddened to receive the news of the death of Father Luke Jumu, parish priest of El Fasher, who was a victim of a recent bombing. I offer the assurance of my prayers for him and all the victims, and I renew my appeal to warring parties to stop the violence, protect civilians and engage in dialogue for peace. I also urge the international community to intensify efforts to provide at least essential assistance to the people, who have been severely affected by this grave humanitarian crisis.

저는 2년 넘게 폭력으로 분열된 수단 공화국을 생각합니다. 최근 폭격으로 희생되신 엘 파셰르 교구의 루크 주무 신부님의 서거 소식을 듣고 깊은 슬픔에 잠겼습니다. 저는 신부님과 모든 희생자들을 위해 기도드리며, 전쟁 당사자들에게 폭력을 중단하고 민간인을 보호하며 평화를 위한 대화에 나서 줄 것을 다시 한 번 호소합니다. 또한 국제 사회가 이 심각한 인도적 위기로 큰 피해를 입은 국민들에게 최소한 필수적인 지원이라도 제공하기 위한 노력을 강화해 줄 것을 촉구합니다.

Let us continue to pray for peace in the Middle East, in Ukraine and throughout the world.

중동과 우크라이나, 그리고 전 세계의 평화를 위해 계속해서 기도합시다.

This afternoon, in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, Floribert Bwana Chui, a young Congolese martyr, will be beatified. He was killed at the age of twenty-six because, as a Christian, he stood up to injustice and defended the vulnerable and the poor. May his witness grant courage and hope to the young people of the Democratic Republic of Congo and in all of Africa!

오늘 오후, 성벽 바깥 성 바오로 대성당에서 콩고 출신의 젊은 순교자 플로리베르 브와나 추이가 시복됩니다. 그는 그리스도인으로서 불의에 맞서 싸우고 약자와 가난한 사람들을 옹호했다는 이유로 26세의 나이로 순교했습니다. 그의 증언이 콩고민주공화국과 아프리카 전역의 젊은이들에게 용기와 희망을 안겨주기를 기원합니다!

Have a wonderful Sunday! And to the young people: I look forward to seeing you in a month and a half at the Jubilee of Youth! May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, intercede for us.
