POPE FRANCIS ANGELUS, The Third Sunday of Advent, St. Peter's Square, Sunday, 17 December 2023

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno! Today, the Third Sunday of Advent, the Gospel speaks to us about John the Baptist’s mission (cf. Jn 1:6-8, 19-28), indicating that he is the prophet sent by God to “testify to the light” (v. 8). Let us reflect on this: to testify to the light.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까! 대림 제3주일인 오늘 복음은 세례자 요한의 사명 (요한 1,6-8, 19-28 참조) 에 대해 말하면서, 세례자 요한은 “빛을 증언하도록” (8절) 하느님께서 보내신 예언자라고 말합니다. 이것에 대해서 즉 빛을 증언하는 것에 대해 살펴봅시다.

Testimony. The Baptist is certainly an extraordinary man. The people flock to listen to him, attracted by his consistent and sincere way of being (cf. vv. 6-7). His testimony comes through his frank language, his honest behaviour, his austerity of life. All this makes him different from other famous and powerful people of that time, who, instead, invested a lot in appearances. People like him – upright, free and courageous – are luminous, fascinating figures: they motivate us to rise above mediocrity and to be in turn models of good living for others. In every age, the Lord sends men and women like this. Do we know how to recognize them? Do we try to learn from their witness, allowing ourselves to be challenged? Or rather, do we allow ourselves to be bedazzled by fashionable people? Then we get caught in artificial behaviour.

증언. 세례자는 분명히 특별한 사람입니다. 사람들이 그의 일관되고 충실한 모습에 매료되어 그의 말을 듣기 위해 모여듭니다. (6-7절 참조) 그는 그의 솔직한 언어, 그의 정직한 행동, 그의 엄격한 삶을 통해서 증언합니다. 이 모든 것이 그를 당시의 다른 유명하고 권력을 쥔 사람들과 다르게 만듭니다. 당시의 유명하고 권력을 쥔 사람들은 외모에 많은 투자를 하였습니다. 세례자 요한처럼 올곧고 자유롭고 용기 있는 사람들은 빛나고 매혹적인 사람들입니다. 그들은 우리가 평범함을 뛰어넘고 다른 사람들에게 좋은 삶의 모델이 되도록 동기를 부여합니다. 각 시대마다 주님은 이런 사람들을 보내십니다. 우리는 그들을 알아볼 줄 압니까? 우리는 우리 자신이 자극을 받도록 맡기면서 그들의 증언으로부터 배우려고 합니까? 아니면 자신을 현재 인기 있는 사람들에게 현혹되도록 맡깁니까? 그러면 우리는 인위적인 행동에 빠지게 됩니다.

John instead is luminous insofar as he testifies to the light. But what is his light? He himself responds when he states clearly to the crowds who had flocked to hear him that he was not the light, that he was not the Messiah (cf. vv. 19-20). The light is Jesus, the Lamb of God, “God who saves”. Only He redeems, frees, heals and enlightens. This is why John is a “voice” who accompanies his brothers and sisters to the Word; he serves without seeking honours or the spotlight: he is a lamp, while the light is the living Christ (cf. vv. 26-27; Jn 5:35)

그러나 요한은 빛을 증언하는 동안 빛을 발합니다. 그러면 그의 빛은 무엇입니까? 요한이 그에 대해 답을 합니다. 자신의 말을 듣기 위해 모인 군중에게 자신은 빛이 아니고, 자신은 메시아가 아니라고 (19-20절 참조) 분명히 말합니다. 그 빛은 예수님, 하느님의 어린 양, “구원하시는 하느님”이십니다. 그분만이 구원하시고, 자유롭게 하시고, 치유하시고, 깨우쳐 주십니다. 이것이 바로 요한이 그의 형제자매들을 동행하여 그들이 말씀으로 향하도록 하는 이유입니다. 그는 명예나 주목을 구하지 않고 봉사합니다. 그는 등불이고, 살아계신 그리스도께서는 빛이십니다. Brothers and sisters, the example of John the Baptist teaches us at least two things. First, that we cannot save ourselves alone: only in God do we find the light of life. And second, that each of us, through service, consistency, humility, witness of life – and always by God’s grace – can be a lamp that shines and helps others find the way on which to meet Jesus.

형제자매 여러분, 세례 요한의 모범은 우리에게 적어도 두 가지를 가르칩니다. 첫째, 우리는 우리만의 힘으로 우리 자신을 구할 수 없다는 것입니다. 오직 하느님 안에서 우리는 생명의 빛을 발견합니다. 그리고 둘째, 우리 각자는 봉사, 일관성, 겸손, 삶으로의 증언 - 그리고 항상 하느님의 은총 - 을 통해서 다른 사람들이 예수님을 만나는 길을 찾도록 비추고 돕는 등불이 될 수 있다는 것입니다.

So, let us ask ourselves: In the places I live, how can I testify to the light, testify to Christ in the here and now this Christmas, not in the distant future? May Mary, mirror of holiness, help us be men and women who reflect Jesus, the light who comes into the world.

그래서 이제 우리 스스로에게 물읍시다. 내가 살고 있는 곳에서 나는 어떻게 빛을 증언할 수 있을까? 현재 이곳에서 먼 훗날이 아닌 이번 크리스마스에 그리스도를 증언할 수 있을까? 거룩함의 거울이신 성모 마리아여, 저희를 도우셔서 저희가 세상에 오시는 빛이신 예수님을 반영하는 사람이 되게 하소서!

After the Angelus
Dear brothers and sisters, Yesterday in the Shrine of Our Lady of Luján in Argentina, Cardinal Eduardo Pironio was beatified, a humble and zealous pastor, a witness of hope, defender of the poor. He collaborated with Saint John Paul II in the promotion of lay people and World Youth Day. May his example help us to be a Church that goes out, that accompanies everyone on their way, especially the weakest. A round of applause for the new Blessed!

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 어제 아르헨티나 루한 성모성지에서 에두아르도 피로니오 추기경이 시복되었습니다. 그는 겸손하고 열정적인 사목자이며 희망의 증인이었으며 가난한 이들의 수호자였습니다. 그는 평신도 옹호와 세계청년대회의 홍보를 위해 성 요한바오로 2세와 협력했습니다. 그분의 모범이 우리의 교회가 밖으로 나가고, 모든 사람 특히 가장 약한 사람들이 가는 길에 동반자가 되게 하소서! 새로운 복자에게 힘찬 박수를 보냅시다.

Today I want to remember the thousands of migrants who try to cross through the Darién jungle between Colombia and Panama. It’s often families with children who venture along dangerous paths, deceived by those who falsely promise them short and safe passage, mistreated and robbed. Not a few lose their lives in the jungle. Combined efforts are needed by the countries more directly affected and the international community to prevent this tragic situation from passing unnoticed, and to provide together a humanitarian response.

오늘 저는 콜롬비아와 파나마 사이의 다리엔 정글을 건너려고 애쓰는 수천 명의 이주민들을 기억하고 싶습니다. 그들 중에 종종 아이들이 있는 가족들이 있습니다. 그들은 안전하고 짧은 길이라고 거짓 약속한 사람들에게 속고, 학대받고, 강탈당하고, 위험한 길을 따라 모험을 떠나는 사람들입니다. 많은 사람들이 정글에서 목숨을 잃습니다. 이 비극적인 상황이 간과되는 것을 막고, 인도주의적 대응을 함께 제공하기 위해서, 더 직접적으로 피해를 입은 국가들과 국제사회가 함께 노력해야 합니다.

And let us not forget our brothers and sisters who are suffering because of war, in Ukraine, in Palestine and Israel, and in other conflict zones. As Christmas approaches, may the dedication to open paths of peace be strengthened.

그리고 우크라이나, 팔레스타인, 이스라엘, 그리고 기타 분쟁 지역에서 전쟁으로 고통 받고 있는 우리 형제자매들을 잊지 맙시다. 성탄절이 다가오는 이때 평화의 길을 여는 노력을 더욱 강화하기를 바랍니다.

I continue receiving very serious and sad news about Gaza. Unarmed civilians are targets for bombs and gunfire. And this has happened even within the parish complex of the Holy Family, where there are no terrorists, but families, children, people who are sick and have disabilities, sisters. A mother and her daughter, Mrs. Nahida Khalil Anton and her daughter Samar Kamal Anton, were killed, and other people were wounded by the shooters while they were going to the bathroom… The house of the Sisters of Mother Teresa was damaged, their generator was hit. Some are saying, “This is terrorism and war”. Yes, it is war, it is terrorism. That is why Scripture says that “God puts an end to war…the bow he breaks and the spear he snaps” (cf. Ps 46:9). Let us pray to the Lord for peace.

저는 가자지구에 관한 매우 심각하고 슬픈 소식을 계속해서 받고 있습니다. 비무장 민간인이  폭탄과 총격의 표적입니다. 테러리스트가 없고, 가족, 어린이, 병자와 장애인, 수녀님들이 있는 성가정 본당 단지 내에서도 이런 일이 일어났습니다. 어머니와 딸인 나히다 칼릴 안톤(Nahida Khalil Anton) 부인과 딸 사마르 카말 안톤(Samar Kamal Anton)이 사망하고, 다른 사람들은 화장실에 가던 중 총격을 받아 부상당했습니다. 마더 테레사 수녀원의 집과 발전기가 파손되었습니다. 어떤 사람들은 “이것은 테러이고 전쟁이다.” 라고 말합니다. 그렇습니다. 전쟁이고 테러입니다. 이것이 바로 성경이 “하느님께서 전쟁을 그치게 하시고 활을 꺾고 창을 부러뜨리신다.” (시편 46,9 참조) 고 말하는 이유입니다. 평화를 위해 주님께 기도합시다.

I greet all of you, families, parish groups and associations, who have come to Rome from Italy and so many parts of the world. In particular, I greet the pilgrims from the United States of America and Poland; the faithful from Mormanno, Acilia and Viterbo.

In blessing your Bambinelli, I ask that you pray before the Nativity scene for children who will experience a difficult Christmas in places where there is war, in refugee camps, in situations of profound misery.
