POPE FRANCIS ANGELUS, Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Saint Peter's Square, Sunday 13 August 2023

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno! Today’s Gospel narrates a particular prodigious deed of Jesus: He walks at night on the waters of the lake of Galilee toward his disciples who are crossing the lake in a boat (cf. Mt 14:22-33). The question is: Why did Jesus do this? Like a show? No! But why? Maybe because of an urgent, unforeseeable need to help his disciples who were blocked by a headwind? No, because he himself had planned everything, He had made them depart that evening. The text even says he “made them” (cf. v. 22). Maybe he did it to give them a demonstration of his greatness and power? But it is not that simple with him. So, why did he do it? Why did he want to walk on the waters?

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까! 오늘 복음은 예수님의 특별한 놀라운 행적을 이야기합니다. 그분은 밤에 배를 타고 호수를 건너는 제자들 쪽으로 갈릴래아 호수 위를 걸어서 가십니다. (마태오 14,22-33 참조) 질문은, 예수님께서 왜 이렇게 하셨습니까? 쇼처럼 보여 주시려고? 아닙니다. 그럼 왜? 맞바람에 가로막힌 제자들을 돕기 위해 긴급하고 예측하지 못한 필요 때문에 그렇게 하셨을까요? 아닙니다. 답은 그분이 몸소 모든 것을 계획하셨기 때문입니다. 그분은 그날 저녁에 제자들을 떠나게 하셨습니다. 본문은 그분이 “그들을 가게 하셨다.” (22절 참조) 라고 까지 얘기합니다. 자신의 위대함과 능력을 그들에게 보여주기 위해 그렇게 하셨을까요? 그러나 그분에게 그렇게 단순하지 않습니다. 그러면 왜 그렇게 하셨을까요? 왜 그분은 물 위로 걷기를 원하셨을까요?

There is a message that is not evident, a message we need to grasp. In fact, at that time, great expanses of water were held to be the haunts of evil powers that man was not able to master. Particularly when storms made them turbulent, these abysses were symbols of chaos and recalled the darkness of the underworld. Now, the disciples found themselves in the middle of the lake when it was dark. They are afraid of sinking, of being sucked in by evil. And comes Jesus here, walking on the waters, that is, over the powers of evil.

거기에 분명하지 않은 메시지, 우리가 파악해야 할 메시지가 있습니다. 사실 그 당시에는 광대한 물은 인간이 지배할 수 없는 악의 세력의 소굴이라고 여겨졌습니다. 특히 폭풍우로 파도가 요동칠 때 이 심연들은 혼돈의 상징이었고 지하세계의 어둠을 상기시켰습니다. 이제 제자들은 깜깜한 밤에 호수 한가운데에 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그들은 침몰할까봐, 악에 빨려 들어 갈까봐 걱정합니다. 그때 예수님께서 물위를 걸어서 즉 악의 세력을 넘어 오십니다.

He walks on top of the powers of evil and says to his disciples: “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid” (v. 27). This is the message Jesus gives us. This is the meaning of the sign: the powers of evil that frighten us, that we cannot master, take on smaller proportions immediately with Jesus. By walking on the waters, He wants to say, “Do not be afraid. I put your enemies under my feet” – a beautiful message – I put your enemies under my feet – not people! – not that type of enemy, but death, sin, the devil – these are the enemies of the people, our enemies. And Jesus tramples on these enemies for us.

그분은 악의 세력 위를 걸으시며 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “용기를 내어라. 나다. 두려워하지 마라.” (27절) 이것이 예수님께서 우리에게 주시는 메시지입니다. 이것이 표징의 의미입니다. 우리를 두렵게 하고 우리가 정복할 수 없는 악의 세력이 예수님이 오시자마자 작아집니다. 물 위를 걸으심으로써 예수님께서는 이렇게 말씀하고 싶으셨던 것입니다. “두려워하지 말라. 너의 원수들을 내가 밟고 있다.” – 아름다운 메시지입니다. – 너의 원수들을 내가 밟고 있다. - 사람들이 아닙니다. - 그런 형태의 원수들이 아이고 죽음, 죄, 악마입니다. - 이런 것들이 사람들의 원수들, 우리의 원수들입니다. 그리고 예수님께서 우리를 위해 이 원수들을 밟고 계십니다.
 
Today, Christ repeats to each of us, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid!” Take heart because I am here, because you are no longer alone on the turbulent waters of life. And so, what should we do when we find ourselves on the open sea at the mercy of headwinds? What should we do when we face the fear of the open sea, when we see only darkness and we feel we are going under? We need to do two things that the disciples do in the Gospel. What do the disciples do? They call on and welcome Jesus. At the worst moments, in the darkest of storms, call on Jesus and welcome Jesus.

오늘 그리스도께서 우리 각자에게 거듭 말씀하십니다. “용기를 내어라. 나다. 두려워하지 마라.” 내가 여기 있으니까, 너는 삶의 격렬한 물위에 더 이상 혼자가 아니기 때문에 용기를 내어라. 그렇다면 역풍이 부는 바다 가운데에 있을 때 우리는 어떻게 해야 합니까? 넓은 바다에 대한 두려움에 직면할 때, 우리가 어두움에 싸여 곧 침몰한다고 느낄 때, 우리는 어떻게 해야 합니까? 우리는 복음에서 제자들이 하는 두 가지 일을 해야 합니다. 제자들은 무엇을 합니까? 그들은 예수님을 부르고 예수님을 맞아들입니다. 최악의 순간에, 폭풍의 암흑의 순간에 예수님을 부르고 예수님을 맞아들이십시오.

The disciples call on Jesus: Peter walks a little on the waters toward Jesus, but then gets frightened. He sinks and then cries out: “Lord, save me!” (v. 30). Invoke Jesus, call on Jesus. This prayer is beautiful. It expresses the certainty that the Lord can save us, that he conquers our evil and our fears. I invite you to repeat it now all together. Three times together: Lord, save me! Lord, save me! Lord, save me!

제자들이 예수님을 부릅니다.: 베드로는 예수님 쪽으로 물위를 조금 걷습니다. 그러나 곧 겁을 먹습니다. 그는 물에 빠져들기 시작하자 "주님, 저를 구해 주십시오." 라고 소리를 지릅니다. (30절) 예수님께 청하십시오. 예수님을 부르십시오. 이 기도는 아름답습니다. 그것은 주님께서 우리를 구하실 수 있다는, 그분이 우리의 악과 우리의 두려움을 정복하신다는 확신을 표현합니다. 지금 그것을 모두 함께 반복하도록 합시다. 함께 세 번 반복합시다. "주님, 저를 구해 주십시오." "주님, 저를 구해 주십시오." "주님, 저를 구해 주십시오."

And then the disciples welcome, first they call on, then they welcome Jesus into the boat. The text says that as soon as he got into the boat, “the wind ceased” (v. 32). The Lord knows that the boat of our life, as well as the boat of the Church, is threatened by headwinds, and that the sea on which we sail is often turbulent. He does not spare us the hard work of sailing, rather – the Gospel emphasizes – he pushes his disciples to depart. He invites us to face difficulties so they too might become salvific places, so Jesus can conquer them, so they become opportunities to meet him. In fact, in our moments of darkness, he comes to meet us, asking to be welcomed like that night on the lake.

그러고 나서 제자들은 맞아들입니다. 그들은 먼저 부르고 예수님을 배 안으로 맞아들입니다. 본문은 그분이 배에 오르시자  “바람이 그쳤다.” (32절) 고 전합니다. 주님께서는 우리 삶의 배와 교회의 배가 역풍의 위협을 받고 있으며 우리가 항해하는 바다는 종종 요동을 친다는 것을 아십니다. 그분은 우리가 항해의 힘든 일을 피하게 하지 않으십니다. 오히려 - 복음에서 강조하듯이 - 그분은 제자들을 재촉하시어 떠나게 하십니다. 그분은 우리가 어려움에 직면하도록 초대하시어 그 어려움들도 구원의 장소가 되고, 예수님께서 그 어려움들을 정복하실 수 있고 그래서 그 어려움들이 그분을 만나는 기회가 되도록 하십니다. 사실 우리의 어두움의 순간에, 예수님께서, 그 밤의 호수에서처럼 자신을 맞아들이라고 청하시면서, 우리를 만나러 오십니다.

So, let us ask ourselves: How do I react when I am afraid, in difficulties? Do I go ahead alone, with my own strength, or do I call on the Lord with trust? And what is my faith like? Do I believe that Christ is stronger than the adversarial waves and winds? But above all: Am I sailing with him? Do I welcome him? Do I make room for him in the boat of my life – never alone, always with Jesus? Do I hand the helm over to Jesus? In the dark crossings, may Mary, the mother of Jesus, Star of the Sea, help us to seek the light of Jesus.

이제 우리 자신에게 물어봅시다. 두려울 때, 어려움에 처했을 때 나는 어떻게 반응하는가?  나는 혼자 힘으로 올로 나아가는가, 아니면 믿음을 가지고 주님을 부르는가? 그리고 나의 믿음은 어떠한가? 나는 그리스도께서 적대적인 파도와 바람보다 더 강하시다고 믿는가? 그러나 무엇보다도 나는 그분과 함께 항해하는가? 나는 그분을 맞아들이는가? 나는 나의 삶의 배 안에 그분이 계실 자리를 마련하여 - 절대로 혼자가 아니고 항상 예수님과 함께 있는가? 나는 배의 키를 예수님께 넘겨드리는가? 어두운 항해에서, 마리아여, 예수님의 어머니시여, 바다의 별이시여, 저희를 도우셔서 저희가 예수님의 빛을 찾게 하소서!

After praying the Angelus, the Holy Father continued:
Dear brothers and sisters, Another tragic shipwreck happened a few days ago in the Mediterranean – forty-one people lost their lives. I have prayed for them. And sadly and shamefully we must say that from the beginning of this year, almost two thousand men, women and children have already died trying to reach Europe. This is an open wound on our humanity. I encourage the political and diplomatic powers that are trying to heal this in a spirit of solidarity and fraternity, as well as the dedication of all those who are working to prevent shipwrecks and are aiding migrants.

삼종기도 후에
친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 며칠 전 지중해에서 또 다른 비극적인 조난사고가 발생하여 마흔 한 (41명) 사람이 목숨을 잃었습니다. 저는 그들을 위해 기도했습니다. 그리고 슬프고 부끄럽게도 우리는 금년 초부터 지금까지 거의 2,000 명의 남성, 여성, 그리고 어린이들이 유럽에 오려다가 사망했다고 말해야 합니다. 이것은 우리 인류의 벌어져 있는 상처입니다. 저는 연대와 형제애 정신으로 이것을 치유하기 위해 노력하는 정치 외교권과 조난 방지와 이주민 지원을 위해 노력하는 모든 분들의 헌신을 응원합니다.
 
Tomorrow, in Bafoussam in Cameroon, still afflicted by violence and war, on the eve of the Feast of Mary Most Holy, Assumed into Heaven, a pilgrimage for peace in the country will take place. Let us unite ourselves in prayer to our brothers and sisters of Cameroon so that, through the Virgin’s intercession, God might sustain the hope of the people who have been suffering for years, and open paths of dialogue so that peace and harmony might be achieved.

내일, 여전히 폭력과 전쟁에 시달리는 카메룬의 바푸삼에서 지극히 거룩하신 마리아 축일 전야에 이 나라의 평화를 위한 순례가 있을 것입니다. 카메룬의 형제자매들과 함께 기도합시다. 하느님께서 동정마리아의 전구를 통해 오랫동안 고통을 받고 있는 카메룬 국민들의 희망을 지탱해주시고, 평화와 조화가 이루어지도록 대화의 길을 열어주시기를 간청하며 기도합시다.

And let us pray for the people of Ukraine who are suffering so much because of this war. I also want to assure my prayers for the victims of the fires that have devastated the Hawaiian Island of Maui.
 
그리고 이 전쟁으로 인해 많은 고통을 겪고 있는 우크라이나 국민들을 위해 기도합시다. 저는 또한 하와이 마우이 섬을 황폐화시킨 화재의 희생자들을 위해 기도합니다.

I now I extend my greetings to all of you, people from Rome and pilgrims from various countries. In particular, I greet several groups who participated in World Youth Day in Lisbon – and there are many!...I see flags – Poland, Mexico, Argentina, Italy, many, El Salvador, many…the priests and young people from El Salvador who are so loud; the students from Universidad Iberoamericana, Puebla, Mexico; and the young people from Taiwan. Enjoy your trip! And I wish all of you a good Sunday. Please, do not forget to pray for me. Enjoy your meal and arrivederci!
