Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno, happy Sunday! And today, happy feast day too, because today we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost. We celebrate the effusion of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles, which took place fifty days after Easter. Jesus had promised it several times. In today’s Liturgy, the Gospel recounts one of these promises, when Jesus said to the disciples: “He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” (Jn 14:26). This is what the Spirit does: he teaches and reminds us of what Christ said. Let us reflect on these two actions, to teach and to remind, because it is in this way that he makes the Gospel of Jesus enter into our hearts.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 행복한 주일입니다. 오늘은 또한 행복한 성령강림대축일입니다. 우리는 부활 후 50일에 사도들에게 일어난 성령강림을 기념합니다. 예수님이 그것을 여러 번 약속하셨습니다. 오늘의 전례의 복음은 예수님이 다음과 같이 말씀하실 때 그 약속 중의 하나가 이루어졌음을 상세히 기술합니다. “성령께서 너희에게 모든 것을 가르치시고 내가 너희에게 말한 모든 것을 기억하게 해 주실 것이다.” (요한 14,26) 이것이 바로 성령께서 하시는 일입니다. 그분은 가르치시고 우리에게 예수님이 말씀하신 것을 기억하게 해주십니다. 이 두 행위 즉 가르치고 기억하게 하는 것을 묵상합시다. 성령께서 이렇게 예수님의 복음이 우리의 마음 안으로 들어오게 하시기 때문입니다.

First of all, the Holy Spirit teaches. In this way he helps us to overcome an obstacle that presents itself to us in the experience of faith: that of distance. He teaches us to overcome the obstacle of distance in the experience of faith. Indeed, the doubt may arise that between the Gospel and everyday life there is a great distance: Jesus lived two thousand years ago, they were other times, other situations, and therefore the Gospel seems to be outdated, it seems unable to speak to our current moment, with its demands and its problems. The question also comes to us: what does the Gospel have to say in the age of the internet, in the age of globalization? What impact can its word have?

첫 째 성령님이 가르치십니다. 이렇게 그분은 우리가 믿음의 체험 중에 나타나는 장애물을 극복하게 도와주십니다. 거리의 장애물입니다. 그분은 믿음의 체험에서 거리의 장애물을 극복하도록 우리를 가르치십니다. 진정 복음과 일상 사이에 큰 거리가 있어서 의심이 일어날 수 있습니다. 예수님은 2,000 전에 사셨고 그때는 다른 시대였고 다른 상황이었고 그래서 복음은 시대에 뒤진 것 같습니다. 새로운 요구와 문제를 가진 우리의 현재의 순간에게 말할 수 없을 것 같습니다. 그 의문은 우리에게도 일어납니다. 인터넷 시대에, 세계화 시대에 복음은 어떻게 말할 것인가? 복음 말씀이 어떤 자극을 줄 수 있을 것인가? 

We can say that the Holy Spirit is a specialist in bridging distances, he knows how to bridge distances; he teaches us how to overcome them. It is he who connects the teaching of Jesus with every time and every person. With him Christ’s words are not a memory, no: Christ’s words, by virtue of the Holy Spirit, come alive today! The Spirit makes them alive for us: through Scripture he speaks to us and directs us in the present. The Holy Spirit does not fear the passing of the centuries; rather, He makes believers attentive to the problems and events of their time. Indeed, for when the Holy Spirit teaches, he actualizes: he keeps faith ever young. We risk making faith a museum piece: it is a risk! He, on the other hand, brings it up to date, always up to date, the faith up to date: this is his job. For the Holy Spirit does not bind himself to passing epochs or fashions, but brings into today the relevance of Jesus, risen and living.

성령님은 거리를 좁히는 전문가라고 말할 수 있습니다. 그분은 거리를 좁힐 줄 아십니다. 그분은 우리에게 그것을 어떻게 극복할 수 있는지 가르쳐 주십니다. 예수님의 가르침과 모든 시대 그리고 모든 사람을 연결하시는 분이 성령님이십니다. 그분이 있으면 그리스도의 말씀은 기억이 아닙니다. 그리스도의 말씀은 성령님의 덕분으로 오늘 살아있는 말씀이 됩니다. 성령님은 그리스도의 말씀을 우리를 위해 살아있는 말씀으로 만드십니다. 성경을 통하여 그분은 우리에게 말씀하시고 현재의 우리에게 방향을 제시하십니다. 성령님은 세월이 흐르는 것을 두려워하지 않으십니다. 오히려 그분은 신자들이 그들 시대의 문제들과 사건들에 주의를 기울이게 하십니다. 진정 성령님이 가르치실 때 그분은 현실화시키기 때문입니다. 그분은 믿음을 항상 젊게 유지하십니다. 우리는 믿음을 박물관의 진열품으로 만들 위험이 있습니다. 그것은 위험입니다. 반면에 그분은 믿음을 최신상태로, 항상 최신상태로, 최신상태의 믿음을 가져오십니다. 이것이 그분의 일입니다. 성령님은 지나가는 시대나 유행에 얽매이지 않으시고 부활하시고 살아계신 예수님을 오늘로 모셔오기 때문입니다.

And how does the Spirit do this? By making us remember. Here is the second verb, to remind, ri-cordare. What does remind mean? To remind means to restore to the heart, ri-cordare: the Spirit restores the Gospel to our heart. It happens as it did for the Apostles: they had listened to Jesus many times, yet they had understood little. The same thing happens to us. But from Pentecost forth, with the Holy Spirit, they remember and they understand. They welcome his words as made specially for them, and they pass from an outward knowledge, an awareness of memory, to a living relationship, a convinced, joyful relationship with the Lord. It is the Spirit who does this, who moves from “hearsay” to personal knowledge of Jesus, who enters the heart. Thus, the Spirit changes our lives: he makes Jesus’ thoughts become our thoughts. And he does this by reminding us of his words, bringing Jesus’ words to our heart, today.

성령님은 이것을 어떻게 하십니까? 우리가 기억하게 하심으로써 하십니다. 여기에 두 번째 동사, 기억하다, 리 코다레가 있습니다. 상기시키다 는 무엇을 의미합니까? 상기시키는 것은 마음에 복원시키는 것을 의미합니다. 성령님은 우리의 마음에 복음을 복원시키십니다. 사도들에게 일어났던 것처럼 일어납니다. 사도들은 예수님의 말씀을 여러 번 들었습니다. 그러나 그들은 그 말씀을 조금밖에 이해하지 못했습니다. 같은 일이 우리에게도 일어납니다. 그러나 성령강림 이후에 성령님과 함께 그들은 기억하고 그들은 이해합니다. 그들은 그들을 위해 특별히 말씀하신 예수님의 말씀을 맞아들이고, 그 말씀은 외적지식, 기억에 대한 인식으로부터 주님과의 살아있는 관계, 확신에 찬, 즐거운 관계로 옮겨갑니다. 이것을 하시는 분은 성령님이십니다. “전해들은 말”을 예수님에 대한 개인적인 지식으로 변화시키고 마음 안으로 들어오시는 분이 성령님이십니다. 그렇게 성령님은 우리의 삶을 변화시키십니다. 그분은 예수님의 생각을 우리의 생각으로 만드십니다. 그분은 이것을 그분의 말씀을 기억하게 하심으로써, 그리고 예수님의 말씀을 오늘의 우리의 마음에 가져오심으로써 하십니다.

Brothers and sisters, without the Spirit reminding us of Jesus, faith becomes forgetful. Very often, faith becomes a recollection without memory; instead, memory is living and living memory is brought by the Spirit. And we – let us try to ask ourselves – are we forgetful Christians? Maybe all it takes is a setback, a struggle, a crisis to forget Jesus’ love and fall into doubt and fear? Woe to us, should we become forgetful Christians! The remedy is to invoke the Holy Spirit. Let us do this often, especially in important moments, before difficult decisions and in difficult situations. Let us take the Gospel in our hands and invoke the Spirit. We can say, “Come, Holy Spirit, remind me of Jesus, enlighten my heart”. This is a beautiful prayer: “Come, Holy Spirit, remind me of Jesus, enlighten my heart”. Shall we say it together? “Come, Holy Spirit, remind me of Jesus, enlighten my heart”. Then, let us open the Gospel and read a small passage slowly. And the Spirit will make it speak to our lives.

형제자매 여러분, 우리에게 예수님을 상기시키시는 성령님 없이 믿음은 잘 잊어먹게 됩니다. 매우 자주 믿음은 기억 없는 회상이 됩니다. 반면에 기억이 살아나고 성령님이 살아있는 기억을 가져다주십니다. 그리고 우리는 - 우리 자신에게 물어봅시다. - 잘 잊어먹는 크리스천인가요? 결국 예수님의 사랑을 잊는 좌절, 투쟁, 위기 때문에 의심과 두려움에 빠지는 것이 아닐까요? 우리가 망각하는 크리스천이 되면 우리에게 화가 있을 것입니다. 해결책은 성령님을 부르는 것입니다. 이것을 자주 합시다. 특별히 중요한 순간에, 어려운 결정 전에, 그리고 어려운 상황에서 성령님을 청합시다. 복음을 손에 들고 성령님을 청합시다. 우리는 이렇게 말할 수 있습니다. “오소서 성령님, 예수님을 기억하게 하시고 제 마음을 밝혀주소서.” 이것은 아름다운 기도입니다. “오소서 성령님, 예수님을 기억하게 하시고 제 마음을 밝혀주소서.” 모두 함께 할까요? “오소서 성령님, 예수님을 기억하게 하시고 제 마음을 밝혀주소서.” 그러고 나서 복음서를 열고 짧은 구절을 천천히 읽으십시오. 그러면 성령님이 복음 구절이 우리의 삶에 말하게 하실 것입니다.

Dear brothers and sisters, On Pentecost, God’s dream for humanity becomes reality; fifty days after Easter, peoples who speak different languages encounter and understand one another. But now, one hundred days after the beginning of the armed aggression against Ukraine, the nightmare of war, which is the negation of God’s dream, has once again befallen humanity: peoples in conflict with one another, peoples who kill each other, people being driven from their homes instead of being brought closer. And while the fury of destruction and death rampages and the conflicts rage on, fuelling an escalation that is increasingly dangerous for all, I renew my appeal to the leaders of Nations: do not lead humanity into ruin, please! Do not lead humanity into ruin, please! Let true negotiations take place, real talks for a ceasefire and for a sustainable solution. Let the desperate cry of the suffering people be heard – we see this every day in the media – have respect for human life and stop the macabre destruction of cities and villages in the east of Ukraine. Let us continue, please, to pray and to strive tirelessly for peace.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 성령강림절에 인류를 위한 하느님의 꿈이 실현됩니다. 부활절 50일 후, 서로 다른 언어를 사용하는 사람들이 만나서 서로를 이해합니다. 그러나 이제 우크라이나에 대한 무력 공격이 시작된 지 100일, 하느님의 꿈을 부정하는 전쟁의 악몽이 다시 한 번 인류에게 닥쳤습니다. 서로 갈등하고, 서로를 죽이고, 더 가까이 가기는커녕 집에서 쫓겨납니다. 그리고 파괴와 죽음의 광란이 만연하고 갈등이 격렬해지면서 모두에게 점점 더 위험해지는 사태를 부채질하고 있는 동안, 저는 국가 지도자들에게 다시 호소합니다. 제발 인류를 파멸로 이끌지 마십시오! 인류를 파멸로 이끌지 말아주세요! 진정한 협상이 일어나도록 하고, 종전과 지속 가능한 해결책을 위한 진정한 대화를 하십시오. 고통 받는 사람들의 절박한 외침을 들으십시오. - 우리는 이 회침을 매일 미디어에서 봅니다. - 인간의 생명을 존중하고 우크라이나 동부의 도시와 마을에 대한 무시무시한 파괴를 멈추십시오. 우리, 계속해서 기도하고 평화를 위해 끊임없이 노력합시다.

Yesterday in Beirut, two Friars Minor Capuchin were beatified: Leonardo Melki and Thomas George Saleh, priests and martyrs, killed in hatred of the faith in Turkey in 1915 and 1917 respectively. These two Lebanese missionaries, in a hostile context, proved their unshakeable faith in God and self-sacrifice for their neighbour. May their example strengthen our Christian witness. They were young – they were not even 35 years old. A round of applause for the new Blesseds!

I have learned with satisfaction that the truce in Yemen has been renewed for another two months. Thanks to God, and to you. I hope that this sign of hope may be a further step to put an end to that bloody conflict, which has caused one of the worst humanitarian crises of our times. Please, do not forget to spare a thought for the children of Yemen: hunger, destruction, lack of education, lack of everything. Let us think of the children!
