POPE FRANCIS ANGELUS, Saint Peter's Square, Fourth Sunday of Easter, 22 May 2022 

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! In the Gospel of today’s Liturgy, bidding his disciples goodbye during the Last Supper, Jesus says almost as a sort of testament: “Peace I leave with you”. And he adds immediately, “My peace I give to you” (Jn 14:27). Let us reflect on these short phrases.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 행복한 주일입니다. 오늘 전례 복음에서 예수님은 최후의 만찬 중에 제자들에게 작별을 고하시면서 거의 일종의 유언처럼 말씀하십니다. “나는 너희에게 평화를 남기고 간다.” 그리고 즉시 덧붙이십니다. “내 평화를 너희에게 준다.” (요한 14,27) 이 짧은 구절들을 묵상합시다.

First of all, peace I leave with you. Jesus bids farewell with words expressing affection and serenity. But he does so in a moment that is anything but serene. Judas has left to betray him, Peter is about to deny him, and almost everyone else to abandon him. The Lord knows this, and yet, he does not rebuke, he does not use severe words, he does not give harsh speeches. Rather than demonstrate agitation, he remains kind till the end. There is a proverb that says you die the way you have lived. In effect, the last hours of Jesus’ life are like the essence of his entire life. He feels fear and pain, but does not give way to resentment or protesting. He does not allow himself to become bitter, he does not vent, he is not impatient. He is at peace, a peace that comes from his meek heart accustomed to trust. This is the source of the peace Jesus gives us. For no one can leave others peace if they do not have it within themselves. No one can give peace unless that person is at peace.

먼저 나는 너희에게 평화를 남기고 간다. 예수님은 애정과 평온을 나타내는 말씀으로 작별인사를 하십니다. 그러나 전혀 평온하지 않은 순간에 그렇게 말씀하십니다. 유다는 그분을 배반하기 위해 떠났고, 베드로는 그분을 부정할 것이고 그 외의 사람들 거의 모두가 그분을 버리고 떠나게 될 것입니다. 주님은 이것을 아시면서도 책망하지 않으시고 가혹한 말씀을 하지 않으시고 거친 연설을 하지 않으십니다. 동요를 나타내기보다 끝까지 친절하십니다. 살아온 방식대로 죽는다는 속담이 있습니다. 사실 예수님 생애의 마지막 시간은 그분의 전 생애의 진수와 같습니다. 두려움과 고통을 느끼시지만 분개 또는 원망하지 않으십니다. 자신이 쓰라리게 되는 것을 허용하지 않으시고 분출하지 않으시고 조급하지 않으십니다. 그분은 평화롭습니다. 신뢰에 익숙한 그분의 온유한 마음에서 오는 평화입니다. 이것이 그분이 우리에게 주시는 평화의 원천입니다. 자신 안에 평화가 없으면 누구도 남에게 평화를 줄 수 없습니다. 자신이 평화롭지 않으면 평화를 줄 수 없습니다.

Peace I leave with you: Jesus demonstrates that meekness is possible. He incarnated it specifically in the most difficult moment, and he wants us to behave that way too, since we too are heirs of his peace. He wants us to be meek, open, available to listen, capable of defusing tensions and weaving harmony. This is witnessing to Jesus and is worth more than a thousand words and many sermons. The witness of peace. As disciples of Jesus, let us ask ourselves if we behave like this where we live – do we ease tensions, and defuse conflicts? Are we too at odds with someone, always ready to react, explode, or do we know how to respond nonviolently, do we know how to respond with peaceful actions? How do I react? Everyone can ask themselves this.

“나는 너희에게 평화를 남기고 간다.” 예수님은 그러한 온유가 가능함을 보여 주십니다. 그분은 특별히 가장 어려운 순간에 그것을 육화시키셨고 우리도 그렇게 행동하기를 원하십니다. 우리도 그분의 평화의 상속자들이기 때문입니다. 그분은 우리가 온유하고 열려있고 경청의 준비가 되어있고 긴장을 완화하고 조화를 이룰 수 있기를 원하십니다. 이것이 예수님을 증거하는 것이며 천 마디의 말과 많은 설교보다 더 가치 있습니다. 평화의 증인입니다. 예수님의 제자로서 우리가 살고 있는 곳에서 이런 행동을 하고 있는지 자문해 봅시다. - 긴장을 완화하고 갈등을 완화합니까? 우리도 누군가와 관계가 서먹하고, 항상 반응하고, 폭발합니까? 또는 비폭력적으로 반응하고 평화로운 행동으로 대응하는 방법을 알고 있습니까? 어떻게 반응합니까? 모두 이것을 자신에게 물어볼 수 있습니다.

Certainly, this meekness is not easy. How difficult it is, at every level, to defuse conflicts! Jesus’ second phrase comes to our aid here: my peace I give you. Jesus knows that on our own we are not able to cultivate peace, that we need help, that we need a gift. Peace, which is our obligation, is first of all a gift of God. In fact, Jesus says: “My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you” (v. 27). What is this peace that the world does not know and the Lord gives us? This peace is the Holy Spirit, the same Spirit of Jesus.

물론 이 온유는 쉽지 않습니다. 모든 계층에서 갈등을 완화하는 것은 매우 어렵습니다! 여기에 예수님의 두 번째 구절 - 내 평화를 너희에게 준다. - 이 우리에게 도움이 됩니다. 예수님은 우리 힘으로 평화를 만들 수 없고 도움이 필요하고 선물이 필요하다는 것을 아십니다. 우리의 의무인 평화는 무엇보다도 하느님의 선물입니다. 사실, 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “내 평화를 너희에게 준다. 내가 주는 평화는 세상이 주는 평화와 같지 않다.” (27절) 세상이 알지 못하고 주님이 우리에게 주시는 이 평화는 무엇입니까? 이 평화는 예수님의 같은 영이신 성령이십니다.

It is the presence of God in us, it is God’s “power of peace”. It is He, the Holy Spirit, who disarms the heart and fills it with serenity. It is He, the Holy Spirit, who loosens rigidity and extinguishes the temptations to attack others. It is He, the Holy Spirit, who reminds us that there are brothers and sisters beside us, not obstacles or adversaries. It is He, the Holy Spirit, who gives us the strength to forgive, to begin again, to set out anew because we cannot do this with our own strength. And it is with Him, with the Holy Spirit, that we become men and women of peace.

그것은 우리 안의 하느님의 현존이시고 하느님의 “평화의 힘”입니다. 마음의 무장을 해제하고 마음을 고요함으로 채우시는 성령 그분이십니다. 완고함을 풀고 다른 사람을 공격하려는 유혹을 없애시는 성령 그분이십니다. 우리 옆에 장애물이나 적이 아닌 형제자매가 있다는 것을 일깨워주시는 성령 그분이십니다. 우리 자신의 힘으로는 이것을 할 수 없기 때문에 용서하고, 다시 시작하고, 새롭게 출발할 수 있는 힘을 주시는 성령 그분이십니다. 그리고 우리는 그분 성령과 함께 평화의 사람이 됩니다.

Dear brothers and sisters, no sin, no failure, no grudge should discourage us from insistently asking for this gift from the Holy Spirit who gives us peace. The more we feel our hearts are agitated, the more we sense we are nervous, impatient, angry inside, the more we need to ask the Lord for the Spirit of peace. Let us learn to say every day: “Lord, give me your peace, give me your Holy Spirit”. This is a beautiful prayer. Shall we say it together? “Lord, give me your peace, give me your Holy Spirit”. I didn’t hear it well. One more time: “Lord, give me your peace, give me your Holy Spirit”. And let us also ask this for those who live next to us, for those we meet each day, and for the leaders of nations. May Our Lady help us welcome the Holy Spirit so we can be peacemakers.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 어떤 죄도, 어떤 실패도, 어떤 원한도 우리에게 평화를 주시는 성령께 이 선물을 끈질기게 구하는 것을 막을 수 없습니다. 마음이 동요한다고 느낄수록, 우리가 초조하고 참을 수 없고 내적을 화난다고 느낄수록 우리는 주님께 평화의 영을 더 청해야 합니다. 매일 주님께 이렇게 말씀드리는 것을 배웁시다. “주님, 제게 당신의 평화를 주십시오. 당신의 성령을 주십시오.” 이것은 아름다운 기도입니다. 다 함께 말해볼까요? “주님, 제게 당신의 평화, 당신의 성령을 주십시오.” 잘 안 들립니다. 한 번 다시, “주님, 제게 당신의 평화, 당신의 성령을 주십시오.” 이것을 또한 우리 이웃에 사는 사람들을 위해서, 우리가 매일 만나는 사람들을 위해서, 그리고 국가의 지도자들을 위해서 청합시다. 우리의 성모님, 저희를 도우셔서 저희가 성령을 맞아들여 저희가 평화를 만드는 사람들이 되게 하소서!

Dear brothers and sisters, This afternoon in Lyon, Pauline Marie Jericot, Foundress of the Society of the Propagation of the Faith for the support of the missions, will be beatified. This faithful lay woman lived during the first half of the 1800s. She was a courageous woman, attentive to the changes taking place at the time, and had a universal vision regarding the Church’s mission. May her example enkindle in everyone the desire to participate through prayer and charity in the spread of the Gospel throughout the world. A round of applause for the new Blessed!

Today, Laudato Si’ Week begins, to listen ever more attentively to the cry of the Earth which urges us to act together in taking care of our common home. I thank the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, and the numerous organizations taking part in it, and I invite everyone to participate.

오늘, 우리가 공동의 집을 돌보는 데 함께 행동할 것을 촉구하는 지구의 외침에 더욱 주의 깊게 귀를 기울이기 위해 Laudato Si' Week가 시작됩니다. 온전한 인간 개발 촉진을 위한 디캐스터리와 이에 참여하는 수많은 단체에 감사드리며 모든 분들의 참여를 부탁드립니다.

This coming Tuesday is the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin, Mary Help of Christians, particularly dear to Catholics in China who venerate Mary, Help of Christians as their Patroness in the Shrine of Sheshan in Shanghai, in many churches throughout the country, and in their homes. This happy occasion offers me the opportunity to assure them once again of my spiritual closeness. I am attentively and actively following the often complex life and situations of the faithful and pastors, and I pray every day for them. I invite all of you to unite yourselves in this prayer so that the Church in China, in freedom and tranquility, might live in effective communion with the universal Church, and might exercise its mission of proclaiming the Gospel to everyone, and thus offer a positive contribution to the spiritual and material progress of society as well.

다가오는 화요일은 상하이 서산 성지에서, 중국 전역의 많은 교회와 가정에서, 그들의 수호자로서 특별히 중국의 친애하는 가톨릭 신자들의 도움이신 마리아를 공경하는 동정 마리아의 기념일이 거행됩니다. 이 행복한 기회를 통해 저는 그들에게 저의 영적 친밀감을 다시 한 번 확인합니다. 저는 신자들과 사제들의 복잡한 삶과 상황을 세심하고 적극적으로 주시하고 있으며 그들을 위해 날마다 기도하고 있습니다. 저는 여러분 모두에게 이 기도에 참여하여 중국의 교회가 자유와 고요 속에서 보편교회와의 효과적인 친교 안에 살고, 모든 사람에게 복음의 선포 사명을 수행하고, 사회의 영적 물적 발전에 긍정적인 기여를 할 수 있도록 초대합니다.

And I greet all of you, pilgrims from Rome, and Italy, and many other countries. In particular, I greet the faithful from Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, Poland and Puerto Rico; the priests from Ecuador; the Emmaus community from Foggia; the volunteers of the Soccorso di Saint-Pierre (Aosta); the students from Verona and the boys and girls from Sombreno, Diocese of Bergamo.

I greet all of you, they are here, who participated in the national Scegliamo la vita [Let’s Choose Life] event. I thank you for your dedication in promoting life and defending conscientious objection, which there are often attempts to limit. Sadly, in these last years, there has been a change in the common mentality, and today we are more and more led to think that life is a good at our complete disposal, that we can choose to manipulate, to give birth or take life as we please, as if it were the exclusive consequence of individual choice. Let us remember that life is a gift from God! It is always sacred and inviolable, and we cannot silence the voice of conscience.
