Holy Father's Address Before the Angelus [Saint Peter's Square] Third Sunday of Ordinary Time (23 January 2022)

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno! In the Gospel of today’s liturgy, we see Jesus beginning his preaching (cf. Lk 4:14-21): it is Jesus’ first sermon. He goes to Nazareth, where he grew up, and participates in prayer in the synagogue. He gets up to read and, in the scroll of the prophet Isaiah, he finds the passage regarding the Messiah who proclaims a message of consolation and liberation for the poor and oppressed (cf. Is 61:1-2). At the end of the reading, “the eyes of all… were fixed on him” (v. 20). And Jesus begins by saying: “Today this scripture has been fulfilled” (v. 21).

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 오늘 전례 복음에서 예수님이 설교를 시작하십니다. (루카 4,14-21 참조) 예수님의 첫 설교입니다. 그분은 자신이 자란 나사렛으로 가셔서 회당에서 기도에 참여하십니다. 그분은 성경을 읽기 위해 일어나서, 예언자 이사야서의 두루마리에서 가난하고 억눌린 자들을 위한 위로와 해방의 메시지를 선포하시는 메시아에 관한 구절을 발견합니다. (이사야 61,1-2 참조) 독서가 끝날 때 “모든 사람의 눈이… 예수님을 주시하였다.” (20절) 그리고 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하기 시작하십니다. “오늘 이 성경 말씀이 너희가 듣는 가운데에서 이루어졌다.” (21절)

Let us dwell on this today. It is the first word of Jesus’ preaching recorded in the Gospel of Luke. Pronounced by the Lord, it indicates a “today” that runs through all ages and always remains valid. The Word of God is always “today”. It begins with a “today”: when you read the Word of God, a “today” begins in your soul, if you understand it well. Today. Isaiah’s prophecy dates back to earlier centuries, but Jesus, “in the power of the Spirit” (v. 14), makes it relevant and, above all, brings it to fulfilment, and shows how to receive the Word of God: today. It is not like ancient history, no: today. It speaks to your heart today,.

이 오늘에 대해 잠시 살펴봅시다. 이 오늘은 루카복음에 기록된 예수님의 첫 설교의 첫 단어입니다. 주님께서 선언하신 이 단어는 모든 시대를 통틀어 항상 유효한 "오늘"을 가리킵니다. 하느님의 말씀은 항상 “오늘”입니다. 하느님의 말씀은 “오늘”로 시작합니다. 하느님의 말씀을 읽을 때, 당신이 잘 이해한다면 “오늘”은 당신의 영혼에서 시작됩니다. 바로 오늘입니다. 이사야의 예언은 이전 세기로 거슬러 올라갑니다. 그러나 예수님은 “성령의 힘으로” (14절) 그 예언을 적절하게 만드시고 무엇보다도 그 예언이 이루어지게 만드시고 하느님의 말씀을 오늘 어떻게 받아들이는지 보여주십니다. 그것은 고대의 역사와 같지 않습니다. 아닙니다. 그것은 오늘 당신의 가슴에 말합니다.
 
Jesus’ fellow countrymen are struck by his word. Even though, clouded by prejudice, they do not believe him, they realize that his teaching is different from that of the other teachers (cf. v. 22): they sense that there is more to Jesus. What is there? There is the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes it happens that our sermons and our teachings remain generic, abstract; they do not touch the soul and the life of the people. And why? Because they lack the power of this today; what Jesus “fills with meaning” in the power of the Spirit, is today. He is speaking to you today. Yes, at times one hears impeccable conferences, well-constructed speeches, which however, do not move the heart and so everything remains as before. Even many homilies — I say this with respect but with pain — are abstract, and instead of awakening the soul, they put it to sleep.

예수님의 고향 사람들은 그분의 말씀에 충격을 받습니다. 편견에 휩싸여 그를 믿지 않음에도 불구하고 그들은 그분의 가르침이 다른 교사들의 가르침과 다르다는 것을 깨닫습니다. (22절 참조) 그들은 예수께 무언가 좀 더 있음을 느낍니다. 무엇이 있을까요? 성령의 기름 부우심이 있습니다. 때때로 우리의 강론과 가르침이 일반적이고 추상적일 때가 있습니다. 그런 강론과 가르침은 사람들의 영혼과 삶을 건드리지 않습니다. 왜 그럴까요? 그 강론과 가르침에 이 오늘의 힘이 결핍되어 있기 때문입니다. 예수님이 성령의 힘 안에서 “의미로 채우시는” 것은 바로 오늘입니다. 예수님이 당신에게 오늘 말씀하고 계십니다. 그렇습니다. 때때로 우리는 흠잡을 데 없는 회견과 잘 구성된 연설을 듣습니다. 그러나 그것들은 마음을 움직이지 않아서 모든 것이 전과 같이 그대로 남습니다. 제가 존경과 아픔을 갖고 이것을 말하는데, 많은 강론조차도 추상적이어서 영혼을 깨우기보다는 영혼을 재웁니다.

When the faithful start looking at their watches — “when will this end?” — they put the soul to sleep. Preaching runs this risk: without the anointing of the Spirit, it impoverishes the Word of God, and deteriorates to moralism or abstract concepts; it presents the Gospel with detachment, as if it were outside time, far from reality. And this is not the way. But a word in which the power of today does not pulsate, is not worthy of Jesus and does not help people’s lives. This is why those who preach, please, should be the first to experience the today of Jesus, in order to be able to communicate it in the today of others. And if they want to give lectures, conferences, let them do so, but elsewhere, not at the time of the homily where they must give the Word in a way that rouses hearts.

신자들이 시계를 보기 시작할 때 — "언제 끝나지?“ - 강론은 영혼을 재웁니다. 설교는 이런 위험부담을 안고 있습니다. 성령의 기름 부으심이 없으면 설교는 하느님의 말씀을 궁핍하게 하고 도덕주의나 추상적인 개념으로 타락시킵니다. 이런 설교는 마치 현실과 동떨어져 있고 시간 밖에 있는 것과 같은 무심한 복음을 전달합니다. 이러면 안 됩니다. 오늘의 힘이 넘치지 않는 말씀은 예수님께 합당하지 않고 사람들의 삶에 도움이 되지 않습니다. 그렇기 때문에 설교하는 사람들은 예수님의 오늘을 가장 먼저 체험해야 합니다. 그것을 다른 사람들의 오늘 안에서 소통할 수 있기 위해서입니다. 그들이 강의나 회견을 하고 싶어 하면, 다른 곳에서 그렇게 하도록 하십시오. 그러나 강론 때에는 안 됩니다. 왜냐하면 강론에서 그들은 가슴을 울리도록 말씀을 전해야 하기 때문입니다.

Dear brothers and sisters, on this Sunday of the Word of God, I would like to thank the preachers and proclaimers of the Gospel who remain faithful to the Word that rouses the heart, who remain faithful to “today”. Let us pray for them, that they may live the today of Jesus, the sweet power of his Spirit that makes the Scriptures come alive. The Word of God, is indeed living and active (cf. Heb 4:12); it changes us, it enters into our affairs, it illuminates our daily lives, it comforts and brings order. Let us remember: the Word of God transforms an ordinary day into the today in which God speaks to us . So, let us pick up the Gospel and choose a small passage to read and re-read each day.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 저는 오늘 하느님의 말씀 주일에 가슴을 울리는 말씀에 충실하고 “오늘”에 충실한 복음의 설교자들과 선포자들에게 감사드립니다. 그들이 성경을 살아 움직이게 하는 성령의 감미로운 능력인 예수님의 오늘을 살 수 있도록 그들을 위해 기도합시다. 하느님의 말씀은 진정 살아서 활동하고, (히브리 4,12 참조) 우리를 변화시키고, 우리의 일 안에 들어오고, 우리의 일상의 삶을 비추고, 위안을 주고 질서를 가져옵니다. 기억합시다. 하느님의 말씀은 평범한 하루를 하느님께서 우리에게 말씀하시는 오늘로 변화시킵니다. 그래서 복음을 꺼내 들고 짧은 구절을 선택하여 매일 읽고 또 읽읍시다.

Keep the Gospel in your pocket or in your bag, to read it on your travels, at any time, and to read it calmly. In time, we will discover that these words are made especially for us, for our life. They will help us welcome each day with a better, more serene outlook because when the Gospel enters into today’s world, it fills it with God. I would like to make a suggestion. On the Sundays of this liturgical year, the Gospel of Luke, the Gospel of mercy, is proclaimed. Why not also read it personally, all of it, one small passage each day? A short passage. Let us familiarize ourselves with the Gospel. It will bring us the newness and joy of God!

여행 중에, 언제라도, 조용히 읽을 수 있도록 복음서를 주머니에 또는 가방에 넣고 다니십시오. 시간이 지나면서 이 말씀들이 특별히 우리를 위한, 우리의 삶을 위한 말씀이란 것을 알게 될 것입니다. 복음이 오늘의 세상에 들어올 때 복음은 세상을 하느님으로 가득 채우기 때문에 그 구절들이 우리가 매일을 더 좋고 더 경건한 기대를 갖고 맞이하는데 도움을 줄 것입니다.
제언 한가지 하고 싶습니다. 이 전례력의 주일에는 자비의 복음인 루카복음이 선포됩니다. 우리 모두 개인적으로 매일 짧은 구절 하나씩 루카복음 전체를 읽으면 어떨까요? 짧은 구절입니다. 우리 자신을 복음과 익숙하게 해 봅시다. 우리에게 새로움과 하느님의 기쁨을 가져다 줄 것입니다. 

The Word of God is also the beacon that guides the synodal journey that has begun throughout the Church. As we strive to listen to each other with attention and discernment — because it is not about conducting an inquiry on opinions, no, but about discerning the Word, there — let us listen together to the Word of God and to the Holy Spirit. And may Our Lady obtain for us the perseverance to nourish ourselves with the Gospel every day.

하느님의 말씀은 또한 교회 전체에 걸쳐 시작된 시노드 여정을 안내하는 등불입니다. 우리가 주의와 식별력을 가지고 서로 경청하려고 노력함에 있어서 - 의견의 청취를 행하는 것이 아니고 말씀의 식별을 하는 것이기 때문에 - 우리 모두 함께 하느님의 말씀과 성령께 귀를 기울입시다. 그리고 우리의 성모님이시여, 저희가 매일 복음으로 저희 자신을 양육하는 인내심을 얻게 하소서.

After the Angelus, the Holy Father made an appeal for Ukraine and proposed a day of prayer for peace.

Dear brothers and sisters, yesterday, the Jesuit priest Rutilio Grande García and two lay companions, and the Franciscan priest Cosme Spessotto, martyrs to the faith, were beatified in San Salvador. They stood by the poor, bearing witness to the Gospel, truth and justice to the point of shedding their blood. May their heroic example inspire in everyone the desire to be courageous workers of fraternity and peace. A round of applause to the new blessed!

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 어제 믿음의 순교자들인 예수회 사제 루틸리오 그란데 가르시아와 두 사람의 평신도 동료, 그리고 프란치스코 수도회 사제 코스메 스페소토가 산살바도르에서 시복되었습니다. 그들은 가난한 이들의 편에 서서 피를 흘리기까지 복음과 진리와 정의를 증거했습니다. 그들의 영웅적인 모범이 모든 사람에게 형제애와 평화의 용감한 일꾼에 대한 열망을 불러일으키게 하소서. 새로운 복자들에게 환호를 보냅시다!

I am following with concern the increase of tensions that threaten to inflict a new blow to peace in Ukraine, and call into question the security of the European continent, with even wider repercussions. I make a heartfelt appeal to all people of good will, that they may raise prayers to God Almighty, that every political action and initiative may serve human brotherhood, rather than partisan interests. Those who pursue their own interests to the detriment of others, scorn their human vocation, because we were all created as brothers and sisters. For this reason, and with concern given the current tensions, I propose that next Wednesday, 26 January, be a day of prayer for peace.

저는 우려하는 마음으로 우크라이나의 평화에 새로운 타격을 가할 위협이 되는 긴장의 고조를 주시하고 있으며 더 큰 영향을 야기할 유럽 대륙의 안보에 의문을 제기합니다. 저는 선의를 가진 모든 사람들이, 모든 정치적 행위와 계획이 당파적 이익보다는 인간의 형제애에 기여하도록 하느님께 기도하도록 진심으로 호소합니다. 남에게 피해를 주면서 자신의 이익을 추구하는 사람들은 인간의 소명을 멸시하는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 모두 형제자매로 창조되었기 때문입니다. 이러한 이유로, 그리고 현재의 긴장을 고려하여 저는 다음 주 수요일인 1월 26일을 평화를 위한 기도의 날로 제안합니다.

In the context of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, I have accepted the proposal which has come from many quarters, and proclaimed Saint Irenaeus of Lyon a Doctor of the universal Church. The teaching of this saintly shepherd and teacher is like a bridge between East and West: this is why we call him a Doctor of Unity, Doctor Unitatis. May the Lord, through his intercession, grant us to work together for the full unity of Christians.
