Holy Father's Address Before the Angelus [Saint Peter's Square] 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time (31 October 2021) 

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno! In today’s liturgy, the Gospel presents a scribe who approaches Jesus and asks him: “Which commandment is the first of all?” (Mk 12:28). Jesus responds by citing Scripture and confirms that the first commandment is to love God; from this one then derives the second, as a natural consequence: to love one’s neighbour as oneself (cf. vv. 29-31). Hearing this response, the scribe not only recognises that he is right, but in doing so, in recognising that he is right, he repeats the same words Jesus had said: “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that…to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbour as oneself is more than a whole burnt offering and sacrifices” (vv. 32-33).

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 오늘의 전례의 복음은 예수님께 다가와
 "모든 계명 가운데에서 첫째가는 계명은 무엇입니까?" (마르코 12,28)라고 묻는 율법학자를 소개합니다. 예수님께서 성경을 말씀하시면서 첫 번째 계명은 하느님을 사랑하는 것이고 이것에서 자연적인 결과로 두 번째 계명은 이웃을 내 몸과 같이 사랑하는 것이라고 확인해주십니다. (29-31절 참조) 이 대답을 듣고 그 율법학자는 그분이 옳다는 것을 인정할 뿐만 아니라 예수님께서 말씀하신 내용을 똑같이 반복합니다. 
 “훌륭하십니다, 스승님. ‘그분은 한 분뿐이시고 그 밖에 다른 이가 없다.’ 하시니, 과연 옳은 말씀이십니다. 또 ‘마음을 다하고 생각을 다하고 힘을 다하여 그분을 사랑하는 것’과 ‘이웃을 자기 자신처럼 사랑하는 것’이 모든 번제물과 희생 제물보다 낫습니다.” (32-33절 참조)

But, we can ask ourselves, in giving his assent, why did that scribe feel the need to repeat Jesus’ same words? This repetition seems to be more surprising if we think that this is the Gospel of Mark, who has a very concise style. So, what could this repetition mean? This repetition is a teaching for all of us who are listening. For the Word of the Lord cannot be received as any other type of news. The Word of the Lord must be repeated, made one’s own, safeguarded. The monastic tradition, of the monks, uses an audacious but very concrete term. It goes thus: the Word of God must be “ruminated”. “To ruminate” the Word of God. We  could say that it is so nutritious that it must be ruminated in every aspect of life: to involve, as Jesus says today, the entire heart, the entire soul, the entire mind, all of our strength (cf. v. 30). The Word of the Lord must resound, echo and re-echo within us. When there is this interior echo that repeats itself, it means that the Lord dwells in the heart. And he says to us, just as he did to that excellent scribe in the Gospel: “You are not far from the kingdom of God” (v. 34).

여기서 우리는 자문해볼 수 있습니다. 그 율법학자가 예수님 말씀에 동의하면서 왜 예수님의 말씀을 반복할 필요를 느꼈을까요? 매우 간결한 문체를 지닌 마르코 복음인 것을 생각하면 이 반복은 더 놀라운 것 같습니다. 그렇다면 이 반복은 무엇을 의미할까요? 이 반복은 듣고 있는 우리 모두를 위한 가르침입니다. 주님의 말씀은 어떤 형태의 소식으로 받아들일 수 없기 때문입니다. 주님의 말씀은 반복하고 자신의 것으로 만들고 보호해야 합니다. 수도자들과 수도원의 전통은 대담하지만 매우 구체적인 용어를 사용합니다. 다음과 같습니다. 하느님의 말씀은 “곰곰이 생각해야” 합니다. 하느님의 말씀을 “곰곰이 생각하다.” 하느님의 말씀은 영양이 매우 풍부하여 삶의 모든 측면에서 심사숙고되어야 한다고 말할 수 있습니다. 오늘 예수님께서 말씀하신 것처럼 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 정신을 다하고 힘을 다하여 (30절) 그렇게 해야 합니다. 주님의 말씀은 우리 안에 울려 퍼지고 메아리치고 다시 메아리쳐야 합니다. 반복되는 이 내적 메아리가 있을 때 그것은 주님께서 마음에 계신다는 것을 뜻합니다. 복음에서의 그 탁월한 율법학자에게 말씀하신 것처럼 예수님께서 우리에게 말씀하십니다. “너는 하느님의 나라에서 멀리 있지 않다.” (34절)

Dear brothers and sisters, the Lord is not so much looking for skilled Scripture commentators, as he is looking for docile hearts which, welcoming his Word, allow themselves to be changed inside. This is why it is so important to be familiar with the Gospel, to always have it at hand – even a pocket-size Gospel in our pockets, in our purses to read and reread, to be passionate about it. When we do this, Jesus, the Word of the Father, enters into our hearts, he becomes intimate with us and we bear fruit in Him. Let’s take for example today’s Gospel: it is not enough to read it and understand that we need to love God and our neighbour.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 주님께서는 능숙한 성경 해설가를 찾으시기보다는 주님의 말씀을 받아들이고 자신을 의탁하여 내적변화가 일어나는 유순한 마음을 찾으십니다. 그렇기 때문에 복음과 친숙하고 복음서를 항상 손에 들고 있는 것, - 주머니나 지갑에 들어갈 수 있는 크기의 복음서 - 읽고 또 읽고, 복음서에 열정적인 것이 매우 중요합니다. 우리가 그렇게 할 때 아버지의 말씀이신 예수님께서 우리 마음에 들어오셔서 우리와 친밀해지시고, 우리는 그분 안에 열매를 맺습니다. 오늘 복음을 예로 들어봅시다. 우리가 하느님을 사랑하고 우리의 이웃을 사랑해야 한다는 구절을 읽고 이해하는 것으로 충분하지 않습니다.

It is necessary that this commandment, which is the “great commandment”, resound in us, that it be assimilated, that it become the voice of our conscience. This way, it does not remain a dead letter, in the drawer of the heart, because the Holy Spirit makes the seed of that Word germinate in us. And the Word of God works, it is always in motion, it is alive and effective (cf. Heb 4:12). So each one of us can become a living, different and original “translation”, not a repetition but a living, different and original “translation” of the one Word of love that God gives us. This is what we see in the lives of the Saints for example. None of them is the same as another, they are all different, but with the same Word of God.

“위대한 계명인” 이 계명이 우리 안에 울려 퍼지고 동화되어 우리의 양심의 소리가 되어야 합니다. 이렇게 하면 성령께서 그 말씀의 씨를 우리 안에서 싹트게 하시므로, 그 말씀이 우리 마음의 서랍 안의 죽은 글자로 남아있지 않게 됩니다. 그리고 하느님의 말씀은 작용하고 - 항상 움직입니다, - 살아 있고, 효력이 있습니다. (히브리 4,12 참조) 그래서 우리 각자는 하느님께서 우리에게 주신 사랑의 말씀의 번역 즉 살아 있고, 다르고, 독창적인 “번역”, 반복이 아닌, 살아 있고, 다르고, 독창적인 “번역”이 될 수 있습니다. 예를 들어 우리는 이것을 성인들의 삶에서 봅니다. 성인들 중에 다른 사람과 같은 사람은 한 사람도 없습니다. 그러나 하느님의 말씀은 같습니다.

Today, therefore, let us take the example of this scribe. Let us repeat Jesus’ words, making them resound in us: “To love God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind and with all our strength and my neighbour as myself”. And let us ask ourselves: does this commandment truly orient my life? Does this commandment resonate in my daily life? It would be good this evening, before going to sleep, to make an examination of conscience on this Word, to see if we have loved the Lord today and if we have done a little good to those we happened to meet. May every encounter bring about a little bit of good, a little bit of love that comes from this Word. May the Virgin Mary, in whom the Word of God was made flesh, teach us to welcome the living word of the Gospel in our hearts.

그러므로 오늘 이 율법학자의 예를 따라 해봅시다. 예수님의 말씀을 반복하고 우리 안에 울려 퍼지도록 합시다. “마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 정신을 다하고 힘을 다하여 하느님을 사랑하고, 나의 이웃을 내 몸과 같이 사랑해야 한다.” 그리고 자문해봅시다. 이 계명이 진정 나의 삶의 방향을 제시하나요? 이 계명이 나의 매일의 삶에 낭랑하게 울리나요? 오늘 저녁 자기 전에 이 말씀에 대하여 양심성찰, 즉 오늘 우리가 하느님을 사랑하였는가, 그리고 오늘 우연히 만난 사람들에게 작은 선행을 했는지 살펴보는 것이 좋겠습니다. 모든 만남이 이 말씀에서 나오는 약간의 선과 약간의 사랑을 가져오게 하소서. 그분을 통해 하느님의 말씀이 사람이 되신 동정 마리아여 저희가 복음의 살아있는 말씀을 저희 마음에 받아들일 수 있도록 가르쳐 주소서.

Dear brothers and sisters, In various parts of Vietnam, the strong, prolonged rains of these last weeks have caused vast flooding, with thousands of people evacuated. My prayer and my thought go to the many families who are suffering, along with my encouragement to all those leaders of the country and the local Church who are working to respond to the emergency. And I am near to the population of Sicily hit by bad weather.

삼종기도 후의 말씀

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 베트남 여러 지역에서 지난 몇 주간의 강력하고 지속적인 비가 홍수를 일으켜 수천 명의 사람들이 대피했습니다. 저의 기도와 저의 생각이 고통 받는 많은 가족들에게 가 있으며 비상사태에 대응하기 위해 노력하고 있는 국가의 모든 지도자들과 지역 교회에 격려의 말씀을 전합니다. 그리고 저는 악천후로 타격을 입은 시칠리아 사람들에게 마음으로 가까이 가 있습니다.

I am also thinking of the population of Haiti who are living in extreme conditions. I ask the leaders of nations to help this country, not to leave it on its own. And all of you, when you return home, look for news about Haiti and pray, pray a lot. I was watching the program A Sua Immagine, the testimony of that Camillian missionary from Haiti, Father Massimo Miraglio, the things that he was saying…of all the suffering, all the pain that there is in that land, and how much abandonment. Let’s not abandon them!

저는 또한 극한의 환경 속에서 살아가고 있는 아이티의 국민들도 생각하고 있습니다. 국가 지도자들에게 이 나라를 혼자 두지 말고 도와달라고 요청합니다. 그리고 여러분, 집에 돌아가시면 아이티 소식을 찾아보고 많이 기도해 주십시오. 저는 A Sua Immagine이라는 프로그램을 보았습니다. 그 아이티 출신의 카밀리아 선교사인 마시모 미라글리오 신부의 간증, 그 땅에 있는 모든 고통, 모든 아픔, 그리고 수많은 버림받음에 대해 말하는 것을 들었습니다. 그들을 버리지 맙시다!

Yesterday in Tortosa, Spain, Francesco Sojo López, Millán Garde Serrano, Manuel Galcerá Videllet and Aquilino Pastor Cambero, priests of the Fraternity of Diocesan Worker Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus were beatified. All of them were killed in hatred of the faith. Zealous and generous pastors during the religious persecution of the 1930s, they remained faithful to their ministry even at the risk of their lives. May their witness be a model especially for priests. A round of applause for these new Blesseds!

어제 스페인 토르토사에서 프란체스코 소조 로페스, 밀란 가르데 세라노, 마누엘 갈세라 비델레, 아퀼리노 캄베로 신부님, 예수 성심의 교구 일꾼 사제 형제회 사제들이 시복되었습니다. 그들 모두는 신앙에 대한 증오 때문에 죽임을 당했습니다. 1930년대의 종교적 박해 속에서도 열정적이고 관대한 사목자들은 목숨의 위험을 무릅쓰고 그들의 사목활동에 충실하였습니다. 그들의 증거가 특히 사제들의 모범이 되게 하소서. 이 새로운 복자들에게 환호의 박수를 보냅시다.

Today, in Glasgow, in Scotland, the United Nations conference on climate change, COP26, begins. Let us pray so that the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor might be heard; that this meeting might provide efficacious responses, offering concrete hope to future generations. In this context, the photographic exhibition Laudato si’ is being inaugurated today in St Peter’s Square, the work of a young photographer originally from Bangladesh.

오늘 스코틀랜드 글래스고에서 유엔 기후 변화 회의인 COP26이 시작됩니다. 지구의 부르짖음과 가난한 자들의 부르짖음이 응답을 받을 수 있도록 기도합시다. 이 회의가 실효성 있는 답변을 제공하고 미래 세대에게 구체적인 희망을 줄 수 있기를 바랍니다. 이러한 맥락에서 방글라데시 출신 젊은 사진작가의 작품인 “Laudato si" 시진전시회가 성 베드로 광장에서 오늘 개막됩니다.

I greet all of you faithful from Rome and pilgrims from various countries, in particular those who have come from Costa Rica. I greet the groups from Reggio Emilia and Cosenza; the children from the Profession of Faith from Bareggio, Canegrate and San Giorgio su Legnano; as well as the Italian Serra International Association, whom I thank for their dedication in promoting priestly vocations.
