Pope's Address Before the Angelus [Saint Peter's Square] Sunday, 25 July 2021

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno! The Gospel of this Sunday’s liturgy recounts the famous episode of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, with which Jesus feeds about five thousand people who came to hear him (cf. Jn 6:1-15). It is interesting to see how this miracle takes place: Jesus does not create the loaves and fishes from nothing, no, but rather He works with what the disciples bring him. One of them says: “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?” (v. 9). It is little, it is nothing, but it is enough for Jesus.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 오늘 주일 전례의 복음은 오병이어의 유명한 이야기를 전해줍니다. 예수님께서 오병이어로 자신의 말씀을 들으러 온 약 5천명의 군중을 먹이십니다. (요한 6,1-15 참조) 이 기적이 어떻게 일어나는지 보는 것은 흥미롭습니다. 예수님께서 무에서 빵과 물고기를 만들지 않으시고 제자들이 가져온 것을 가지고 기적을 일으키십니다. 제자들 중에 하나가 이렇게 얘기합니다. "여기 보리 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 가진 아이가 있습니다만, 저렇게 많은 사람에게 이것이 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까?" (9절) 그것은 작고 아무것도 아니지만 예수님께는 충분합니다. 

Let us now try to put ourselves in the place of that boy. The disciples ask him to share everything he has to eat. It seems to be an unreasonable proposal, or rather, unjust. Why deprive a person, indeed a child, of what he has brought from home and has the right to keep for himself? Why take away from one person what is not enough to feed everyone anyway? In human terms, it is illogical. But not for God. On the contrary, thanks to that small freely-given and therefore heroic gift, Jesus is able to feed everyone. This is a great lesson for us. It tells us that the Lord can do a lot with the little that we put at His disposal. It would be good to ask ourselves every day: “What do I bring to Jesus today?”. He can do a lot with one of our prayers, with a gesture of charity for others, even with one of our sufferings handed over to His mercy. Our small things to Jesus, and He works miracles. This is how God loves to act: He does great things, starting from those small things, those freely-given ones.

그 소년의 입장이 되어 봅시다. 제자들이 그 소년에게 그가 먹어야 하는 모든 것을 나누라고 청합니다. 불합리한 제안 또는 정의롭지 않은 제안입니다. 왜 사람, 사실 아이, 으로부터 집에서 가지고 온 것을, 자신을 위해 보관할 권한이 있는 것을 빼앗습니까? 왜 한 사람으로부터 어차피 모든 사람을 먹일 수 없는데 그의 것을 빼앗습니까? 인간의 생각으로 그것은 논리에 맞지 않습니다. 그러나 하느님께는 다릅니다. 오히려 그 작은 공짜로 준. 그래서 영웅적인 선물인 그 오병이어 덕분에 예수님께서 모든 사람들을 먹일 수 있으십니다. 이것이 우리에게 큰 교훈입니다. 우리가 주님께서 쓰시도록 드린 작은 것을 가지고 주님께서는 큰일은 할 수 있으십니다. 매일 자신에게 이렇게 묻는 것이 좋습니다. “오늘 예수님께 무엇을 갖다 드릴까?” 우리의 기도로, 다른 사람들을 위한 사랑의 행위로, 그분의 자비에 맡긴 우리의 고통까지도 예수님께서는 많은 것을 할 수 있으십니다. 예수님께 드린 우리의 작은 것들로 예수님께서 기적을 행하십니다. 이것이 하느님께서 좋아하시는 방법입니다. 주님께서 그 작을 것들을 시작으로, 그 자유롭게 드린 것들로 위대한 일을 하십니다. 
All the great protagonists of the Bible - from Abraham, to Mary, to the boy today - show this logic of smallness and giving. The logic of smallness and giving. The logic of giving is so different from ours. We try to accumulate and increase what we have, but Jesus asks us to give, to diminish. We like to add, we like addition; Jesus likes subtraction, taking something away to give it to others. We want to multiply for ourselves; Jesus appreciates it when we share with others, when we share. It is interesting that in the accounts of the multiplication of the loaves in the Gospels, the verb “multiply” never appears: no. On the contrary, the verbs used have the opposite meaning: “to break”, “to give”, “to distribute” (cf. v. 11; Mt 14:19; Mk 6:41; Lk 9:16). But the verb “to multiply” is not used. The true miracle, says Jesus, is not the multiplication that produces vanity and power, but the sharing that increases love and allows God to perform wonders. Let us try to share more: let us try the way Jesus teaches us.

아브라함부터 마리아, 오늘의 소년에 이르기까지 성경의 모든 위대한 주인공들은 이 작음과 베풀기의 논리를 보여줍니다. 작음과 베풀기의 논리. 베풀기의 논리는 우리의 논리와 매우 다릅니다. 우리는 우리가 가진 것을 축적하고 늘리려고 노력하지만, 예수님께서는 우리에게 베풀기와 줄일 것을 요구하십니다. 우리는 더하기를 좋아하고 추가하기를 좋아합니다. 예수님께서는 빼기를 좋아하십니다. 다른 사람들에게 주기 위해 무엇인가를 빼십니다. 우리는 스스로를 위해 증식하기를 원합니다. 예수님께서는 우리가 다른 사람들과 나눌 때, 우리가 나눌 때 그것을 높이 평가하십니다. 복음서에 빵의 증식의 설명에서 “증식하다”라는 동사가 한 번도 나오지 않는 것은 흥미롭습니다. 오히려 사용된 동사는 반대의 의미를 갖고 있습니다. “쪼개다”, “주다”, “나누어 주다” (11 절; 마태오 14,19; 마르코 6,41; 루카 9,16 참조) 그러나 "증식하다"라는 동사는 사용되지 않습니다. 예수님께서 말씀하시기를 진정한 기적은 헛됨과 권력을 낳는 “증식”이 아니고 사랑을 더하고 하느님께서 놀라운 일을 하시도록 하는 나눔이라고 하십니다. 더 많이 나누도록 노력합시다. 예수님께서 우리에게 가르치시는 방법을 시도해봅시다.

Even today, the multiplication of goods cannot solve problems without fair sharing. The tragedy of hunger comes to mind, which affects the little ones in particular. It has been calculated officially that every day in the world around seven thousand children under the age of five die due to malnutrition, because they do not have what they need to live. Faced with scandals such as these, Jesus also addresses an invitation to us, an invitation similar to the one probably received by the boy in the Gospel, who has no name and in whom we can all see ourselves: “Be brave, give what little you have, your talents, your possessions, make them available to Jesus and to your brothers and sisters. Do not be afraid, nothing will be lost, because if you share, God will multiply. Banish the false modesty of feeling inadequate, trust yourself. Believe in love, believe in the power of service, believe in the strength of gratuitousness”.

오늘날에도 상품의 증식은 공정한 나눔 없이는 문제를 해결할 수 없습니다. 특히 어린 아이들에게 영향을 미치는 굶주림의 비극이 떠오릅니다. 공식적으로 전 세계에서 매일 약 7,000명의 5세 미만 어린이가 생존에 필요한 음식이 없어서 영양실조로 사망하는 것으로 집계되었습니다. 이와 같은 문제에 직면하여, 예수님께서도 우리를 초대하십니다. 복음서의 이름도 없고 우리 모두가 우리 자신을 볼 수 있는 그 소년이 받은 것과 비슷한 초대입니다. “용기를 갖고, 너희가 가진 작은 것, 너의 재능, 너의 소유를 예수님과 너희의 형제자매들에게 주어라. 두려워하지 마라, 아무것도 잃지 않을 것이다. 나누면 하느님께서 증식하실 것이기 때문이다. 부적절하다고 느끼는 거짓 겸손을 버리고 자신을 믿어라. 사랑을 믿고, 봉사의 힘을 믿으며, 무상의 힘을 믿어라.”

May the Virgin Mary, who answered “yes” to God's unprecedented proposal, help us to open our hearts to the Lord's invitations and to the needs of others.

하느님의 전례 없는 제안에 “예”라고 응답한 동정 마리아께서 저희를 도우셔서 주님의 초대와 다른 사람들의 필요에 저희의 가슴을 열게 하소서.

After the Angelus the Holy Father continued:

Dear brothers and sisters, We have just celebrated the Liturgy on the occasion of the First World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. A round of applause to all the grandparents! Grandparents and grandchildren, young and old together, have showed one of the beautiful faces of the Church and demonstrated the covenant between the generations. I invite you to celebrate this Day in every community and to visit grandparents and the elderly, those who are most alone, to take to them my message, inspired by Jesus' promise: "I am with you every day". I ask the Lord that this feast may help those of us who are older to respond to His call in this season of life, and show society the value of the presence of grandparents and the elderly, especially in this throwaway culture.

삼종기도 후에 계속 말씀하셨습니다.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 우리는 제1차 세계 조부모와 노인의 날을 맞아 전례를 거행했습니다. 모든 조부모들께 박수를 보냅니다! 조부모와 손자, 노소가 함께 아름다운 교회의 모습을 보여 주었고 세대 간의 약속을 보여 주었습니다. 모든 공동체에서 이 날을 기념하고 가장 외로운 조부모와 노인들을 방문하여 "나는 매일 너희와 함께 있다.“는 예수님의 약속에서 영감을 받은 저의 메시지를 그들에게 전하도록 초대합니다. 저는 이 축일이 나이 먹은 우리들이 인생의 이 계절에 그분의 부르심에 응답하고 특히 이 버리는 문화에서 조부모와 노인의 존재의 가치를 사회에 보여주는데 도움이 되기를 주님께 간구합니다.

Grandparents need young people and young people need grandparents: they must talk to each other, they must encounter one another! Grandparents have the sap of history that rises up and gives strength to the growing tree. I am reminded - I think I quoted it once - of that passage by a poet: “All that blossoms on the tree comes from that which is under the ground”. Without dialogue between young people and their grandparents, history does not move forward, life does not move forward: we need to take this up again, it is a challenge for our culture. Grandparents have the right to dream by looking at young people, and young people have the right to the courage of prophecy, drawing on their lifeblood from their grandparents. Please, do this: meet grandparents and young people and talk, converse. It will bring happiness to everyone.

조부모에게는 젊은이가 필요하고 젊은이에게는 조부모가 필요합니다. 그들은 서로 이야기해야 하고, 서로 만나야 합니다! 조부모는 위로 올라가며 자라는 나무에 힘을 주는 역사의 수액을 가지고 있습니다. 한 번 인용했던 것 같은 시인의 시 구절이 생각납니다. “나무에 꽃피는 모든 것은 땅 밑에 있는 것으로부터 온다.” 젊은이와 조부모 사이의 대화가 없으면 역사는 발전하지 않고 삶은 발전하지 않습니다. 우리는 이것을 다시 받아들일 필요가 있으며 우리 문화에서 그것은 도전이라고 할 수 있을 정도로 어렵습니다. 조부모는 젊은이를 보고 꿈을 꿀 권리가 있고, 젊은이는 조부모로부터 그들의 활력의 근원을 받아 예언의 용기를 가질 권리가 있습니다. 이렇게 하십시오. 조부모와 젊은이들을 만나서 얘기하고 대화하십시오. 모두에게 행복을 가져다 줄 것입니다.

In recent days, torrential rains have hit the city of Zhengzhou and Henan Province in China, causing devastating floods. I pray for the victims and their families, and express my sympathy and solidarity with all those who are suffering as a result of this calamity.

최근 중국 정저우(鄭州)시와 허난성(河南省)을 강타한 폭우로 끔찍한 홍수가 발생했습니다. 희생자와 그 가족을 위해 기도하며 이 재난으로 인해 고통을 겪고 있는 모든 분들께 위로와 연대의 마음을 전합니다.

Last Friday, the 32nd Olympic Games opened in Tokyo. In this time of pandemic, may these Games be a sign of hope, a sign of universal brotherhood under the banner of healthy competition. God bless the organisers, the athletes and all those who collaborate in this great festival of sport!
