Pope's Address Before the Angelus ["A. Gemelli" University Hospital] (Sunday, 11 July 2021)

Dear Brothers and Sisters, buongiorno! I am glad to be able to keep the Sunday Angelus appointment, even here from “Gemelli” Policlinico. I thank you all: I have felt your closeness and the support of your prayers. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! The Gospel passage we read today in the Liturgy recounts that Jesus’ disciples, sent by Him, “anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them” (Mk 6:13). This “oil” also makes us think of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, which gives comfort to spirit and body. But this “oil” is also listening, the closeness, the care, the tenderness of those who take care of the sick person: it is like a caress that makes you feel better, soothes your pain and cheers you up. All of us, everyone, sooner or later, we all need this “anointing” of closeness and tenderness, and we can all give it to someone else, with a visit, a phone call, a hand outstretched to someone who needs help.

교황님의 삼종기도 전 말씀 [게멜리 대학 병원] (주일, 2021. 7. 11.)

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 주일 삼종기도 약속을 여기 폴리크리니코의 ‘게밀리’병원에서 지킬 수 있어서 기쁩니다. 모든 분들께 감사드립니다. 여러분의 친밀함, 지지, 그리고 기도를 느꼈습니다. 저의 가슴 깊은 곳으로부터 감사드립니다. 오늘 읽은 복음구절은 예수님께서 파견하신 제자들이 “많은 병자에게 기름을 부어 병을 고쳐 주었다.”고 얘기합니다. (마르코 6,13) 이 “기름”은 또한 병자에게 기름을 붓는 성사를 생각하게 합니다. 병자성사는 영혼과 몸에 위안을 줍니다. 그러나 이 “기름”은 또한 경청, 친밀함, 돌봄, 병자를 돌보는 사람들의 다정함입니다. 그것은 당신을 기분 좋게 하고, 고통을 진정시키며, 기운을 북돋아주는 애무와 같습니다. 조만간 우리 모두, 모두에게 친밀함과 부드러움의 "기름부음"이 필요하며 우리가 방문, 전화, 도움이 필요한 사람에게 손을 내밀어 다른 사람에게 줄 수 있습니다.

Let us remember that, in the protocol of the final judgment – Matthew 25 – one of the things they will ask us will be about closeness to the sick. In these days of being hospitalized, I have experienced once again how important good health care is, accessible to all, as it is in Italy and in other countries. Free health care, that assures good service, accessible to everyone. This precious benefit must not be lost. It needs to be kept! And for this everyone needs to be committed, because it helps everyone and requires everyone’s contribution. In the Church it also happens at times that some healthcare institution, due to poor management, does not do well economically, and the first thought that comes to mind is to sell it. But the vocation, in the Church, is not to have money; it is to offer service, and service is always freely given. Do not forget this: to save free institutions.

마지막 심판의 과정에서 -  마태복음 25장 - 그들이 우리에게 묻는 것 중 하나는 병자들과의 친밀함에 관한 것임을 기억합시다. 병원에 입원한 요즘, 저는 이탈리아와 다른 나라들에서와 같이 모두가 이용할 수 있는 양질의 의료 서비스가 얼마나 중요한지 다시 한 번 경험했습니다. 모든 사람이 이용할 수 있는 양질의 서비스를 보장하는 무료 의료 서비스. 이 소중한 혜택을 잃어서는 안 됩니다. 보존해야 합니다! 그리고 이를 위해서 모든 사람이 헌신해야 합니다. 모든 사람을 돕고 모든 사람의 기여가 필요하기 때문입니다. 교회에서도 어떤 의료기관은 경영이 부실해서 경제적으로 잘 안 되는 경우가 있는데, 가장 먼저 떠오르는 생각은 매각하는 것입니다. 그러나 교회에서 소명은 돈을 버는 것이 아닙니다. 서비스를 제공하는 것이며 서비스는 항상 무료로 제공됩니다. 이것을 잊지 마십시오: 무료 기관을 보존하십시오.

I would like to express my appreciation and my encouragement to the doctors and all the healthcare workers and staff of this and of other hospitals. They work so hard!  And let us pray for all the sick. Here there are some friends, sick children…. Why do children suffer? Why children suffer is a question that touches the heart. Accompany them with prayer and pray for all those who are sick, especially for those in the most difficult conditions: may no one be left alone, may everyone receive the anointing of listening, closeness, tenderness and care. Let us ask this through the intercession of Mary, our Mother, Health of the Sick.

이 병원과 다른 병원의 의사들과 모든 의료 종사자 및 직원들에게 감사와 격려를 전하고 싶습니다. 그들은 너무 열심히 일합니다! 그리고 모든 병자들을 위해 기도합시다. 여기에 친구들, 아픈 아이들이 있습니다. 아이들은 왜 고통을 받습니까? 아이들이 왜 고통 받는가는 마음을 적시는 질문입니다. 그들과 함께 기도하며 병든 사람들, 특히 가장 어려운 상황에 있는 사람들을 위해 기도하십시오. 아무도 외롭지 않게 하시고, 모든 사람이 경청, 친밀함, 부드러움 및 보살핌의 기름 부음을 받도록 하십시오. 병자의 건강이신 우리 어머니 마리아의 전구를 통해 이것을 청합시다.

After the Angelus:

Dear brothers and sisters, In recent days my prayer has often been aimed at Haiti, following the assassination of its President and the wounding of his wife. I join in the heartfelt appeal of the country’s Bishops to “lay down weapons, choose life, choose to live together fraternally in the interest of all and in the interest of Haiti”. I am close to the beloved Haitian people; I hope that the spiral of violence will cease and the nation can resume the journey toward a future of peace and harmony.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 최근에 저는 아이티 대통령이 암살되고 그의 아내가 부상당한 후 아이티를 위해 자주 기도합니다. 저는 “무기를 내려놓고 생명을 선택하며 모든 사람의 이익과 아이티의 이익을 위해 형제적으로 함께 사는 것을 선택하라”는 아이티 주교들의 진심어린 호소에 동참합니다. 저는 사랑하는 아이티 사람들과 마음으로 가까이 있습니다. 폭력의 소용돌이가 멈추고 아이티가 평화와 화합의 미래를 향한 여정을 다시 시작할 수 있기를 희망합니다.

Today is “Sea Sunday”, dedicated in a particular way to seafarers and to those whose source of work and sustenance is the sea. I pray for them and exhort everyone to take care of the oceans and seas. Take care of the health of the seas: no plastic in the sea! I remember and bless those who today in Poland are participating in the pilgrimage of Radio Maria Family to the Shrine of Czestochowa. Today we celebrate the Feast of Saint Benedict, Abbot and Patron of Europe. An embrace to our protector Saint! Let us offer our prayerful good wishes to the men and women Benedictines throughout the world. And best wishes to Europe, that it be united in its founding values.

오늘은 특별히 선원과 일과 생계의 근원이 바다인 사람들을 위한 “바다의 주일”입니다. 저는 그들을 위해 기도하고 모든 사람들이 대양과 바다를 돌볼 것을 권고합니다. 바다의 건강을 돌보십시오. 바다에 플라스틱이 없어야 합니다! 저는 오늘 폴란드에서 라디오 마리아 가족의 체스토호바 성지 순례에 참여하고 있는 이들을 기억하고 축복합니다. 오늘 우리는 유럽의 대수도원장이자 수호성인인 성 베네딕토 축일을 지냅니다. 우리의 수호자 성인에 대한 포옹입니다. 전 세계의 베네딕토회의 남녀회원들을 위해 기도합시다. 그리고 유럽이 창립 가치로 통합되기를 기원합니다.
