The Holy Father’s Catechesis on Prayer 24 – Prayer in daily life (General Audience at Library of the Apostolic Palace on Wednesday, 10 Feb. 2021)

Good morning. In the preceding catechesis we saw how Christian prayer is “anchored” in the Liturgy. Today, we will shed light on how it always returns into daily life from the Liturgy: on the streets, in offices, on public transportation... And there it continues the dialogue with God: one who prays is like someone in love who always carries the beloved person in his or her heart wherever they go.

기도에 대한 교황님의 교리 24 – 일상에서의 기도 (일반 접견 2021.02.10.)

안녕하세요, 앞서의 교리에서 우리는 그리스도인의 기도가 어떻게 전례 안에 “자리 잡고” 있는지 보았습니다. 오늘 우리는 어떻게 그 기도가 항상 전례에서 일상으로 - 거리 위의, 사무실 안의, 대중교통 안의... 일상으로 돌아오는지 비춰보겠습니다. 거기에서 하느님과의 대화는 계속됩니다. 기도하는 사람은 어디를 가든지 그의 가슴 속에 사랑하는 사람을 항상 지니고 다니는 사랑에 빠진 사람과 같습니다.

Essentially, everything becomes a part of this dialogue with God: every joy becomes a reason for praise, every trial is an opportunity to ask for help. Prayer is always alive in our lives, like embers, even when the mouth does not speak, but the heart speaks. Every thought, even apparently “profane” ones, can be permeated by prayer.

근본적으로 모든 것이 하느님과의 이 대화의 일부가 됩니다. 모든 기쁨이 찬미의 이유가 되고, 모든 시험이 도움을 청하는 기회가 됩니다. 기도는 늘 불씨와 같이 우리 삶에 살아있습니다. 입으로 말을 하지 않을 때조차 가슴은 말합니다. 모든 생각들이, 명확히 “세속적인” 것조차, 기도에 스며들 수 있습니다.

There is even a prayerful aspect in human intelligence; it is, in fact, a window peering into the mystery: it illuminates the few steps in front of us and then opens up to the entire reality, this reality that precedes it and surpasses it. This mystery does not have a disquieting or anxious face, no. Knowledge of Christ makes us confident that whatever our eyes and our minds’ eyes cannot see, rather than nothing being there, there is someone who is waiting for us; there is infinite grace. And thus, Christian prayer instils an invincible hope in the human heart: whatever experience may touch us on our journey, God’s love can turn it into good.

In this regard, the Catechism reads: “We learn to pray at certain moments by hearing the Word of the Lord and sharing in his Paschal Mystery, but his Spirit is offered us at all times, in the events of each day, to make prayer spring up from us... time is in the Father’s hands; it is in the present that we encounter him, not yesterday nor tomorrow, but today” (n. 2659). Today I meet God, today is always the day of the encounter.

There is no day more wonderful day than the one we are living. Those who live always thinking about the future: “But the future will be better...”, but who do not take each day as it comes are people who live in their fantasy, they do not know how to deal with concrete reality. And today is real, today is concrete. And prayer takes place today. Jesus comes to meet us today, the day we are living. And it is prayer that transforms this day into grace, or better, that transforms us: it quells anger, sustains love, multiplies joy, instils the strength to forgive. Sometimes it will seem that it is no longer we who are living, but that grace lives and works in us through prayer.

우리가 살고 있는 오늘보다 더 멋진 날은 없습니다. 살아가는 사람들은 늘 미래에 대해 생각합니다. “하지만 미래에는 나아질 거야...” 그러나 매일의 날을 그대로 받아들이지 못하는 이들은 자신의 환상 속에 사는 사람들입니다. 그들은 구체적 실제를 다룰 줄 모릅니다. 오늘은 실제이고 오늘은 구체적입니다. 그리고 기도는 오늘 일어납니다. 예수님께서는 오늘, 우리가 살고 있는 날에 우리를 만나러 오십니다. 그리고 이 날을 은총으로 바꾸는 것은 기도입니다. 더 잘 표현하면, 우리를 바꾸는 것은 기도입니다. 기도는 화를 가라앉히고, 사랑을 지속시키고, 기쁨을 배가 되게 하며, 용서할 수 있는 힘을 불어넣습니다. 때때로 살고 있는 것이 더 이상 우리가 아니고, 그 은총이 기도를 통해 우리 안에서 살고 일하는 것처럼 보일 것입니다.

And when an angry, an unhappy thought comes to us, that moves us toward bitterness, let us stop ourselves and say to the Lord: “Where are you? And where am I going?” And the Lord is there, the Lord will give us the right word, the advice to go ahead without that bitter taste of negativity. For prayer is always — to use a profane word — positive. Always. It will carry you forward. Each day that begins, if welcomed in prayer, is accompanied by courage, so that the problems we have to face no longer seem to be obstacles to our happiness, but rather appeals from God, opportunities for our encounter with him. And when one is accompanied by the Lord, he or she feels more courageous, freer, and even happier.

그리고 우리를 비통함으로 이끄는 화나고 불행한 생각이 들 때, 우리 자신을 멈추고 주님께 말씀 드립시다. “어디에 계십니까? 저는 어디로 가고 있습니까?” 그러면 그곳에 주님께서 계십니다. 주님께서 저희에게 바른 말씀을 하실 것입니다. 그 부정적인 쓴맛을 버리고 앞으로 나아가라는 조언입니다. 기도는 항상 - 세속적 표현을 빌리자면 - 긍정적이기 때문입니다. 항상 그렇습니다. 기도는 당신을 앞으로 나아가게 합니다. 시작되는 매일을 기도로 환영하면 용기를 수반하여, 우리가 당면해야 하는 문제들은 더 이상 우리의 행복에 장애물로 보이지 않고 오히려 하느님으로부터의 호소로 보이고, 그분과 우리의 만남의 기회로 보입니다. 그리고 주님과 동행할 때 사람들은 더 많은 용기를, 더 자유로움을, 그리고 더 행복함까지 느낍니다.

Thus, let us always pray for everything and for everyone, even for our enemies. Jesus counselled us to do this: “Pray for your enemies”. Let us pray for our dear ones, but also for those we do not know. Let us pray even for our enemies, as I said, as the Scriptures often invite us to do. Prayer inclines us toward a superabundant love. Let us pray above all for unhappy people, for those who weep in solitude and give up hope that there might still be someone who loves them.

그러므로 늘 모든 것에 대해, 모든 이들을 위해, 우리의 적을 위해서조차 기도합시다. 예수님께서 우리에게 이렇게 하라고 가르치셨습니다. “너희의 원수를 위해 기도하여라.” 우리가 사랑하는 이들을 위해 기도합시다. 그러나 또한 우리가 알지 못하는 이들을 위해서도 기도합시다. 우리의 원수를 위해서조차 기도합시다. 앞서 말했듯이, 성경에서는 우리가 그렇게 하도록 초대합니다. 기도는 우리를 넘치는 사랑으로 향하게 합니다. 무엇보다 불행한 사람들을 위해, 홀로 우는 사람들을 위해, 그리고 자신을 사랑하는 사람들이 아직 있을 것이라는 희망을 포기한 사람들을 위해서 기도합시다.

Prayer works miracles; and so the poor understand, by God’s grace that, even in their precarious situation, the prayer of a Christian makes Christ’s compassion present. Indeed, he looked with great tenderness on the weary and lost crowd who were like sheep without a shepherd (cf Mk 6:34). The Lord is — let us not forget — the Lord of compassion, of nearness, of tenderness: three words never to be forgotten. Because this is the Lord’s style: compassion, nearness, tenderness.

기도는 기적을 만듭니다. 그래서 가난한 사람들이, 하느님의 은총으로, 그들의 불안한 상황에서 조차 그리스도인의 기도가 그리스도의 연민의 현존을 보여준다는 것을 이해합니다. 진정 예수님께서는 목자 없는 양과 같은 지치고 길 잃은 군중을 보시고 가엾은 마음을 가지셨습니다. (마르코 6,34 참조) 주님께서는 - 잊지 맙시다 - 가엾은 마음의, 가까이 계신, 온유하신 주님이십니다. 세 단어는 절대로 잊지 않을 것입니다. 이것이 주님의 스타일이기 때문입니다. 연민, 친밀, 온유.

Prayer helps us love others, despite their mistakes and their sins. The person is always more important than his or her actions, and Jesus did not judge the world, but saved it. The life of people who always judge others, who are always condemning, judging, is a horrible one... It is a horrible, unhappy life. Jesus came to save us. Open your heart, forgive, give others the benefit of the doubt, understand, you, too, be close to others, be compassionate, be tender, like Jesus. We have to love each and every one, remembering in prayer that we are all sinners and at the same time loved individually by God. Loving the world in this way, loving it with tenderness, we will discover that each day and everything bears within it a fragment of God’s mystery.

Again, the Catechism reads: “Prayer in the events of each day and each moment is one of the secrets of the Kingdom revealed to ‘little children,’ to the servants of Christ, to the poor of the beatitudes. It is right and good to pray so that the coming of the kingdom of justice and peace may influence the march of history, but it is just as important to bring the help of prayer into humble, everyday situations; all forms of prayer can be the leaven to which the Lord compares the kingdom” (n. 2660).

Mankind — the human person, men and women, all of us — is like a breath, like a blade of grass (cf Ps 144:4; 103:15). The philosopher Pascal once wrote: “There is no need for the whole universe to take up arms to crush him: a vapour, a drop of water is enough to kill him”.[1] We are fragile beings, but we know how to pray: this is our greatest dignity and it is also our strength.

인류는, 인간, 남성과 여성, 우리 모두는 - 숨결과 같고, 한포기 풀과 같습니다. (시편 144,4 103,15). 철학자 파스칼은 이렇게 적었습니다. “그를 무너뜨리기 위해 온 우주가 무장할 필요는 없다. 증기, 물 한 방울도 그를 죽이기에 충분하다.” 우리는 연약한 존재입니다. 그러나 우리는 기도하는 법을 압니다. 이것이 우리의 가장 큰 존엄이고, 또한 우리의 힘입니다.

Have courage. Pray in every moment, in every situation because the Lord is near us. And when a prayer is said according to Jesus’ heart, it obtains miracles.

용기를 가지십시오. 매 순간, 모든 상황에서 기도하십시오. 왜냐하면 주님께서 우리 가까이에 계시기 때문입니다. 그리고 예수님 마음에 따른 기도를 할 때 기적을 얻습니다.
