Pope's Address Before the Angelus (May 31, 2020)

Dear Brothers and Sisters, good morning! Today, as the Square is open, we can return; it’s a pleasure! Today we celebrate the great feast of Pentecost, recalling the effusion of the Holy Spirit on the first Christian community. Today’s Gospel (Cf. John 20:19-23), takes us back to the Easter evening and shows us Jesus risen who appears in the Cenacle, where the disciples had sought refuge. They were afraid. “Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you!’(v. 19).” These first words pronounced by the Risen One: “Peace be with you,” must be considered more than a greeting: they express forgiveness, forgiveness given to the disciples that, to tell the truth, had abandoned Him.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분 안녕하십니까? 오늘 광장이 열려서 우리가 돌아올 수 있습니다. 아주 기쁜 일입니다. 오늘 우리는 첫 크리스천 공동체에 내리신 성령님을 기억하며 성령 강림 대축일을 기념합니다. 오늘의 복음 (요한 20,19-23)은 우리를 부활절 저녁으로 이끌어 다락방에 나타나신 부활하신 예수님을 보여줍니다. 그곳에는 제자들이 피난할 곳을 찾아 모여 있었습니다. 그들은 두려웠습니다. “예수님께서 오시어 가운데에 서시며, ‘평화가 너희와 함께!’ 하고 그들에게 말씀하셨다.” (19절) 부활하신 예수님께서 첫 번째로 하신 말씀, “평화가 너희와 함께!”는 인사 이상으로 생각됩니다. 이 말씀은 용서를 표현합니다. 사실대로 말하면 예수님을 버린 제자들에게 주신 용서입니다.

They are words of reconciliation and forgiveness. And we too, when we wish peace to others, are giving forgiveness and asking also for forgiveness. Jesus offers His peace in fact to these disciples who are afraid, who find it hard to believe what they have seen, namely, the empty sepulcher, and underestimating the testimony of Mary Magdalene and of the other women. Jesus forgives, He always forgives, and He offers His peace to His friends. Don’t forget: Jesus doesn’t tire of forgiving. We are the ones that tire of asking for forgiveness.

화해와 용서의 말씀입니다. 우리도 다른 사람에게 평화를 빌 때 용서를 하고 용서를 청합니다. 사실 예수님께서 이 제자들에게 평화를 제시하십니다. 그 제자들은 두려워하고, 그들이 본 것 즉 빈 무덤을 믿기 힘들어 하고, 마리아 막달레나와 다른 여인들의 증언을 과소평가합니다. 예수님께서 용서하십니다. 그분은 항상 용서하시고 그분의 평화를 그분의 친구들에게 제시하십니다. 잊지 마십시오. 예수님께서는 용서하시는 것에 지치지 않으십니다. 오히려 용서를 청하는데 지치는 사람들은 우리들입니다.

Forgiving the disciples and gathering them around Him, Jesus makes of them a Church, His Church, which is a reconciled community and ready for the mission – reconciled and ready for the mission. When a community isn’t reconciled, it’s not ready for the mission: it’s ready to argue within itself, it’s ready for internal disputes. The encounter with the Risen Lord overturns the Apostles’ existence and transforms them into courageous witnesses. In fact, immediately after, He says: “As the Father has sent Me, even so, I send you” (v. 212).

제자들을 용서하시고 그들을 주위에 모이게 하시어, 예수님께서 그들이 교회가 되게 하십니다. 그 교회는 그분의 교회이고 화해한 공동체로서 선교사명을 수행할 준비가 된 교회입니다. 화해하여 선교사명을 수행할 준비가 된 교회입니다. 공동체가 화해하지 않으면 그 공동체는 선교사명을 수행할 준비가 되지 않은 것입니다. 오히려 내부적으로 논쟁할 준비가 된 것입니다. 내부적 다툼을 준비한 것입니다. 부활하신 주님과의 만남이 사도들의 존재를 뒤집고 그들을 용감한 증인으로 바꿔놓습니다. 사실 예수님께서 곧바로 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “아버지께서 나를 보내신 것처럼 나도 너희를 보낸다.” (21절)

These words make us understand that the Apostles are invited to prolong the mission itself, which the Father entrusted to Jesus. “I send you: it’s not the time to be locked up, or to regret, regretting the “good times,” those past times with the Master. The joy of the Resurrection is great, but it’s an expansive joy, which is not kept for oneself, it’s to be given. In the Sundays of Eastertide we first heard this same episode, then the meeting with the disciples of Emmaus, then the Good Shepherd, the farewell address and the promise of the Holy Spirit — all this is to reinforce the faith of the disciples, and also ours, in view of the mission.

이 말씀으로 우리는 사도들이 아버지께서 예수님께 맡기신 선교사명 자체를 연장하도록 부르심을 받은 것을 이해합니다. “나도 너희들 보낸다.” 지금은 다락방에 갇혀 있을 때가 아닙니다. 주인님과 함께 있었던 옛날의 “좋은 시절”을 생각할 때가 아닙니다. 부활의 기쁨은 대단하지만 그것은 확장형 기쁨으로서 혼자만 간직하는 기쁨이 아니고 남들과 나누어야 할 기쁨입니다. 부활절 주일에 우리는 처음에 이 같은 이야기를 듣습니다. 그리고 엠마오의 제자들과의 만남, 그리고 선한 목자, 그리고 작별인사와 성령의 약속을 듣습니다. 이 모든 것이 선교사명의 관점에서 제자들과 또한 우리들의 믿음을 강화시키기 위한 것입니다.

It is, in fact, to animate the mission. Jesus gives the Apostles His Spirit. The Gospel says: “He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit’” (v.22). The Holy Spirit is fire that burns sins and creates new men and women; He is fire of love with which the disciples will be able to “fire” the world, that love of tenderness that prefers the little ones, the poor, the excluded . . . We received the Holy Spirit with His gifts in the Sacraments of Baptism and of Confirmation: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, fear of God. This last gift, fear of God, is in fact the contrary of the fear that before paralyzed the disciples: it is love of the Lord, it is the certainty of His mercy and His goodness, it is the confidence to be able to move in the direction He indicates, without ever lacking His presence and His support.

The feast of Pentecost renews the awareness that the vivifying presence of the Holy Spirit dwells in us. He also gives us the courage to go outside of the protective walls of our “cenacles,” of groups, without spoiling us in quiet living or locking ourselves in sterile habits. Let us raise our thought now to Mary. She was there, with the Apostles, when the Holy Spirit came, protagonist with the first Community of the wonderful experience of Pentecost. Let us pray to her to obtain an ardent missionary spirit for the Church.

성령 강림 대축일은 우리 안에 계신 성령의 생생한 존재에 대한 인식을 새롭게 합니다. 성령은 또한 우리가 조용한 삶 또는 무균의 관습에 자신을 가두어 우리 자신을 망치지 않고, 우리의 “다락방”과 단체의 보호 장벽 밖으로 나가는 용기를 줍니다. 이제 우리의 생각을 성모 마리아께 높입시다. 성모님께서는 오순절의 놀라운 체험을 한 첫 공동체에 주인공으로 성령님이 오셨을 때 사도들과 함께 거기에 계셨습니다. 성모님께 저희가 교회를 위한 열정적인 선교의 영을 얻도록 기도합시다.
