POPE LEO XIV, ANGELUS, FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD, St Peter's Square, Sunday, 11 January 2026
Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! The feast of the Baptism of Jesus, which we celebrate today, anticipates the beginning of Ordinary Time. This liturgical season will invite us to follow the Lord together, to listen to his Word and to imitate his gestures of love towards others. In doing so, we confirm and renew our Baptism, the sacrament that makes us Christians, freeing us from sin and transforming us into children of God through the power of his Spirit of life.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 복된 주일입니다! 오늘 우리가 기념하는 예수님의 세례 축일은 연중 시기의 시작을 알립니다. 이 전례 시기는 우리 모두 함께 주님을 따르고, 그분의 말씀에 귀 기울이며, 이웃을 향한 그분의 사랑의 행동을 본받도록 초대합니다. 그렇게 함으로써 우리는 우리의 세례를 확인하고 새롭게 다짐합니다. 우리의 세례는 우리를 그리스도인으로 만들어, 죄에서 해방시키고, 생명의 성령의 힘을 통하여 우리를 하느님의 자녀로 변화시킨 성사입니다.
Today’s Gospel recounts how this efficacious sign of grace comes about. When Jesus is baptized by John in the Jordan River, he sees “the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him” (Mt 3:16). At the same time, from the open heavens, the voice of the Father resounds: “This is my Son, the Beloved” (v. 17). In this moment, the entire Godhead becomes present in history: just as the Son descends into the waters of the Jordan, the Holy Spirit descends upon him and, through him, is given to us as the power of salvation.
오늘 복음은 이 효과적인 은총의 표징이 어떻게 생기게 됐는지 이야기 합니다. 예수님께서 요한에게 요르단 강에서 세례를 받으실 때, 그분께서는 “하느님의 영이 비둘기처럼 당신 위로 내려오시는 것” (마태오 3,16) 을 보셨습니다. 바로 그때, 열린 하늘에서 아버지의 음성이 울려 퍼집니다. “이는 내가 사랑하는 아들, 내 마음에 드는 아들이다.” (17절) 이 순간, 삼위일체 하느님 모든 분이 역사에 현존하시게 됩니다. 성자께서 요르단 물속으로 내려오시듯, 성령께서 그분 위에 내려오시고, 그분을 통해 우리는 구원의 능력인 성령을 받습니다.
Dear friends, God does not look upon the world from afar, unconcerned with our lives, our troubles or our expectations! Instead, he comes among us with the wisdom of his Word made flesh, drawing us into a wondrous plan of love for all humanity.
사랑하는 친구 여러분, 하느님께서는 멀리서 세상을 바라보시며 우리의 삶이나 어려움, 우리의 기대에 무관심하신 분이 아니십니다! 오히려 그분께서는 지혜로운 말씀의 육화로 우리 가운데 오셔서 모든 인류를 위한 사랑의 놀라운 계획안으로 우리를 끌어들이십니다.
This is why John the Baptist, filled with wonder, asks Jesus: “Do you come to me?” (v. 14). Yes, in his holiness, the Lord allows himself to be baptized like a sinner, to reveal God’s infinite mercy. The Only-Begotten Son, in whom we are brothers and sisters, comes to serve rather than dominate, to save rather than condemn. He is Christ the Redeemer. He takes upon himself what is ours, including our sin, and gives us what is his: the grace of new and eternal life.
이것이 바로 세례자 요한이 놀라움에 가득 차 예수님께 “선생님께서 저에게 오시다니요?” (14절)라고 묻는 이유입니다. 그렇습니다. 주님께서는 거룩하심에도 불구하고 자신이 죄인처럼 세례를 받도록 허락하심으로써 하느님의 무한한 자비를 드러내십니다. 그분 안에서 우리가 형제자매인 외아드님께서 지배하기보다는 섬기기 위해, 단죄하기보다는 구원하기 위해 오십니다. 그분께서는 구세주 그리스도이십니다. 그분께서는 우리의 죄를 포함하여 우리의 모든 것을 짊어지시고, 그분의 것, 곧 새롭고 영원한 생명의 은총을 우리에게 주십니다.
The sacrament of Baptism makes this event present in every time and place, welcoming each of us into the Church, the people of God, composed of men and women of every nation and culture reborn by his Spirit. Let us, therefore, dedicate this day to remembering the great gift we have received, committing ourselves to bear witness to it with joy and authenticity. Just today, I baptized several newborn babies who have become our new brothers and sisters in the faith. How beautiful it is to celebrate the love of God – who calls us by name and frees us from evil – as one family! This first of the sacraments is a sacred sign that accompanies us forever. In moments of darkness, Baptism is light; in life’s conflicts, it is reconciliation; at the hour of death, it is the gateway to heaven.
세례성사는 이 사건을 모든 시간과 장소에 현존하게 하며, 우리 각자를 하느님의 백성인 교회 안으로 맞아들입니다. 하느님의 백성은 성령으로 새롭게 태어난 모든 민족과 문화권의 남녀로 이루어집니다. 그러므로 오늘 우리는 우리가 받은 이 위대한 선물을 기억하고, 기쁨과 진실함으로 그 선물을 증거하기로 다짐합시다. 바로 오늘 저는 갓 태어난 아기들에게 세례를 베풀었고, 그들은 이제 우리의 새로운 믿음의 형제자매가 되었습니다. 하느님 - 우리를 이름으로 부르시고 악에서 해방시켜 주시는 - 하느님의 사랑을 한 가족으로 기념하는 것이 얼마나 아름다운 일입니까! 이 첫 번째 성사는 우리와 영원히 함께하는 거룩한 표징입니다. 어둠의 순간에 세례는 빛입니다. 삶의 갈등 속에서 세례는 화해입니다. 죽음의 시간에 세례는 천국으로 가는 문입니다.

Dear brothers and sisters, As I have already mentioned, following the custom on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, I baptized several newborn children of employees of the Holy See this morning. I would now like to extend my blessing to all children who have received or will receive Baptism during these days – in Rome and throughout the world – entrusting them to the maternal care of the Virgin Mary. In a particular way, I pray for children born into difficult circumstances, whether due to health conditions or external dangers. May the grace of Baptism, which unites them to the Paschal Mystery of Christ, bear fruit in their lives and in the lives of their families.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 이미 말씀드렸듯이, 주님 세례 축일의 관례에 따라 오늘 아침 저는 교황청 직원들의 갓난아기 몇 명에게 세례를 베풀었습니다. 이제 저는 로마와 전 세계에서 이 기간 동안 세례를 받았거나 받을 모든 어린이들에게 저의 축복을 전하고, 성모 마리아의 모성애에 그들을 의탁합니다. 특히 건강 문제나 외부 위험으로 인해 어려운 환경에서 태어난 어린이들을 위해 기도합니다. 그들을 그리스도의 파스카 신비와 하나 되게 하는 세례의 은총이 그들의 삶과 그들의 가정에 풍성한 열매를 맺기를 기도합니다.
My thoughts turn to the situation currently unfolding in the Middle East, especially in Iran and Syria, where ongoing tensions continue to claim many lives. I hope and pray that dialogue and peace may be patiently nurtured in pursuit of the common good of the whole of society.
저의 생각은 현재 중동, 특히 이란과 시리아에서 벌어지고 있는 상황에 가 있습니다. 그곳에서는 계속되는 긴장으로 인해 많은 사람들이 목숨을 잃고 있습니다. 저는 대화와 평화가 인내심을 갖고 꾸준히 가꿔져 사회 전체의 공동선을 이룰 수 있기를 간절히 바랍니다.
In Ukraine, new attacks – particularly severe ones aimed at energy infrastructure as the cold weather grows harsher – are taking a heavy toll on the civilian population. I pray for those who suffer and renew my appeal for an end to the violence and for renewed efforts to achieve peace.
우크라이나에서는 새로운 공격 - 특별히 날씨가 점점 추워지는 상황에서 에너지 기반 시설을 겨냥한 심각한 공격 - 이 민간인들에게 큰 피해를 입히고 있습니다. 고통 받는 모든 분들을 위해 기도하며, 폭력이 종식되고 평화를 이루기 위한 노력이 다시 한 번 강화되기를 간절히 호소합니다.
