POPE LEO XIV, ANGELUS, 1st Sunday of Lent, St Peter's Square, 22 February 2026

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! Today, on the First Sunday of Lent, the Gospel tells us about Jesus who, led by the Spirit, enters the desert and is tempted by the devil (cf. Mt 4:1–11). After fasting for forty days, he feels the weight of his humanity: physically, through hunger, and morally, through the devil’s temptations. In this, he experiences the same struggle we all face on our journey. By resisting the evil one, he demonstrates how we, too, can overcome the devil’s deception and snares.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 복된 주일입니다! 오늘 사순제1주일의 복음은 성령의 인도로 광야에 나가시어 악마의 유혹을 받으시는 예수님에 관해 얘기합니다. (마태오복음 4,1-11 참조) 40일 동안 단식하신 예수님께서는 육체적으로는 배고픔으로, 도덕적으로는 악마의 유혹으로 인간으로서의 한계를 느끼십니다. 여기에서 예수님께서는 우리의 여정에서 우리 모두가 겪는 그런 어려움을 경험하십니다. 악마에 대항하심으로써 예수님께서는 우리도 악마의 속임수와 함정을 어떻게 이겨낼 수 있는지 보여주십니다.

Through this Word of life, the liturgy invites us to view Lent as a luminous path. By means of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we can renew our cooperation with the Lord in the crafting of our lives as a unique masterpiece. This involves allowing him to cleanse the stains and heal the wounds of sin, as we commit to letting our lives blossom in beauty until they attain the fullness of love — the only source of true happiness.

생명의 이 말씀을 통해, 전례는 우리에게 사순을 하나의 빛나는 여정으로 보도록 초대합니다. 그 여정에서 우리는 기도, 단식, 그리고 자선을 행함으로써, 우리의 삶을 독특한 걸작으로 빚는 작업에 주님과 새롭게 협력할 수 있습니다. 이는 주님께서 죄의 얼룩을 씻어내시고 상처를 치유하시도록 맡기는 것을 의미하며, 우리의 삶을 아름답게 꽃피워, 진정한 행복의 유일한 원천인 사랑의 충만함에 이르도록 헌신하는 것을 뜻합니다.

To be sure, this is a demanding journey. There is always the risk of discouragement or of being drawn to easier paths to satisfaction, such as wealth, fame and power (cf. Mt 4:3–8). These temptations, which Jesus himself faced, are merely poor substitutes for the joy for which we were created. Ultimately, they leave us dissatisfied, restless and empty.

물론, 이는 어려운 여정입니다. 거기에는 낙심하거나, 재물, 명예, 권력과 같은 더 쉽게 만족하는 길에 빠질 위험이 항상 도사리고 있습니다. (마태오복음 4,3-8 참조) 예수님께서도 직접 직면하셨던 이러한 유혹들은 우리가 창조된 목적, 즉 기쁨의 보잘 것 없는 대체품에 지나지 않습니다. 결국 이것들은 우리를 불만족스럽고, 불안하고, 공허하게 만들 뿐입니다.

For this reason, Saint Paul VI taught that penance — far from impoverishing our humanity — enriches, purifies and strengthens it, as we move toward a horizon that has “as its aim love and surrender to God” (Apostolic Constitution Paenitemini, 17 February 1966, I). Indeed, while penance makes us aware of our limitations, it also grants us the strength to overcome them and to live, with God’s help, in deeper communion with him and with one another.

이러한 이유로 성 바오로 6세께서는 보속이 우리의 인간성을 피폐하게 하는 것이 아니라 오히려 그것을 풍요롭게 한다고 가르치셨습니다. 보속은 인간을 정화하고 굳세게 하여 “그 지향점이 하느님께 대한 사랑과 하느님께 자신을 내맡김”인 지평을 향해 나아가게 합니다. (교황령 [Paenitemini], 1966년2월17일 1) 사실 보속은 우리로 하여금 자신의 한계를 깨닫게 하면서도 그 한계를 극복하고 하느님의 도움으로 그분과 우리 서로 간에 깊은 친교를 살아가도록 힘을 줍니다.

In this time of grace, let us therefore practice penance generously, alongside prayer and works of mercy. Let us create space for silence by turning off televisions, radios and cell phones for a while. Let us meditate on the Word of God, approach the Sacraments, and listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit who speaks to us in our heart. Let us also listen to one another — in our families, workplaces and communities. Let us dedicate time to those who are alone, especially the elderly, the poor and the sick. By giving up what is superfluous, we can share what we save with those in need. Then, as Saint Augustine taught, our prayer offered in this way — “in humility and charity, by fasting and giving, by restraining ourselves and pardoning, by paying out good deeds and not paying back bad ones, by turning away from evil and doing good” (Sermons, 206, 3) — will reach heaven and give us peace.

그러므로, 이 은총의 시기에 우리 모두 기도와 자비로운 행위와 더불어 아낌없이 보속을 실천합시다. 잠시 텔레비전, 라디오, 휴대폰을 끄고 침묵의 시간을 갖도록 합시다. 하느님의 말씀을 묵상하고, 성사에 참여하며, 우리 마음속에 말씀하시는 성령의 음성에 귀 기울입시다. 또한 가정, 직장, 공동체 안에서 서로에게 귀 기울입시다. 홀로 있는 분들, 특히 노인, 가난한 사람, 병든 사람들에게 시간을 할애합시다. 우리는 불필요한 것을 포기함으로써 절약한 것을 필요한 사람들과 나눌 수 있습니다. 그러면 성 아우구스티누스가 가르쳤듯이, 이렇게 드리는 우리의 기도는 - 즉 “겸손과 사랑으로, 단식과 나눔, 절제와 용서로, 선을 행하고, 악을 악으로 갚지 않고, 악을 피하고 선을 행함으로” (설교, 206, 3) - 드리는 우리의 기도는 하늘에 이르고 우리에게 평화를 줍니다.

Dear brothers and sisters, Four years have passed since the beginning of the war against Ukraine. My heartfelt thoughts remain focused on the tragic situation unfolding before the eyes of the whole world: so many victims, so many lives and families shattered, such immense destruction, such unspeakable suffering! Every war is truly a wound inflicted upon the entire human family; it leaves in its wake death, devastation and a trail of pain that marks generations.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 우크라이나 전쟁이 시작된 지 4년이 지났습니다. 전 세계가 지켜보는 가운데 벌어지고 있는 비극적인 상황에 저의 애통한 마음이 고정되어 있습니다. 수많은 희생자, 산산조각 난 삶과 가족, 엄청난 파괴, 형언할 수 없는 고통! 모든 전쟁은 인류 전체에 깊은 상처를 남깁니다. 전쟁은 죽음과 파괴, 그리고 대대로 이어지는 고통의 흔적을 남깁니다.

Peace cannot be postponed. It is an urgent necessity that must find a home in our hearts and be translated into responsible decisions. For this reason, I renew my heartfelt appeal: let the weapons fall silent, let the bombings cease, let an immediate ceasefire be reached, and let dialogue be strengthened to pave the way toward peace.

평화는 더 이상 미룰 수 없습니다. 평화는 우리 마음속에 안주해야하고, 책임감 있는 결정으로 이어져야 할 긴급한 사항입니다. 이러한 이유로 저는 다시 한 번 간절히 호소합니다. 무기를 침묵시키고, 폭격을 멈추고, 즉각적인 정전에 도달하며, 평화 촉진을 위한 대화를 강화할 것을 호소합니다.

I invite everyone to join in prayer for the embattled people of Ukraine and for all those who suffer due to this war and every conflict in the world, that the long-awaited gift of peace may shine upon our days.

고통 받는 우크라이나 국민들과 이 전쟁, 그리고 세상의 모든 분쟁으로 고통 받는 모든 사람들을 위해 함께 기도해 주시기를 부탁드립니다. 오랫동안 기다려온 평화의 선물이 우리의 삶을 비추기를 기도합니다.
