POPE LEO XIV, ANGELUS, 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Saint Peter's Square, Sunday, 24 August 2025

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! At the heart of today’s Gospel (Lk 13:22-30), we find the image of the “narrow gate,” which Jesus uses in his answer to someone who asks him if only a few will be saved. Jesus says, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able” (v 24).

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 행복한 주일입니다! 오늘 복음(루카 13,22-30)의 핵심은 구원받을 사람이 적지 않겠느냐는 어떤 사람의 질문에 대한 답변에서 예수님께서 말씀하신 “좁은 문”의 이미지입니다. 예수님께서 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “너희는 좁은 문으로 들어가도록 힘써라. 내가 너희에게 말한다. 많은 사람이 그곳으로 들어가려고 하겠지만 들어가지 못할 것이다.” (루카 13,24)

At first glance, this image can make us think: if God is the Father of love and mercy, who always stands with open arms to welcome us, why does Jesus say that the gate of salvation is narrow?

이 이미지를 언 뜻 보기에, 이런 생각이 들 수 있습니다. 하느님께서 우리를 맞아들이기 위해 항상 두 손 벌리고 기다리시는 분이라면, 예수님께서는 왜 구원의 문이 좁다고 말씀하시는 걸까요?

Certainly, the Lord does not want to discourage us. Rather, his words are meant primarily to challenge the presumption of those people who think they are already saved, who perform religious acts and feel that is all that is needed.  They have not realized that it is not enough to perform religious acts unless they change hearts. The Lord does not want worship detached from life. He is not pleased with sacrifices and prayers, unless they lead to greater love for others and justice for our brothers and sisters. For this reason, when such people come before the Lord boasting that they ate and drank with him and heard him teaching in their streets, they will hear him reply: “I do not know where you come from; go away from me, all you evildoers!” (v 28).

물론 주님께서 우리를 좌절시키고 싶어 하지 않으십니다. 다만 그분께서는 일차적으로 이미 구원받았다고 간주하는 사람들, 즉 종교적인 행위를 하고 그것으로 충분하다고 생각하는 사람들을 염두에 두고 말씀하신 것입니다. 그들은 마음을 바꾸지 않는 한, 종교적 행위를 하는 것만으로는 충분하지 않다는 것을 깨닫지 못했습니다. 주님께서는 삶과 분리된 예배를 원하지 않으십니다. 그분께서는 다른 사람들을 위한 더 큰 사랑과 형제자매들을 위한 정의의 실현을 하지 않으면서 바치는 희생제물과 기도를 기뻐하지 않으십니다. 이러한 이유로, 그런 사람들이 주님 앞에 와서 그분과 함께 먹고 마시며 거리에서 가르치시는 것을 들었다고 자랑할 때, 그들은 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하시는 것을 듣게 될 것입니다. “너희가 어디에서 온 사람들인지 나는 모른다. 모두 내게서 물러가라, 불의를 일삼는 자들아!” (27절)

Brothers and sisters, the challenge presented to us in today’s Gospel is worth considering. While we may sometimes be judgmental towards those distant from the faith, Jesus calls into question “the security of believers.” He tells us that it is not enough to profess the faith with words, to eat and drink with him by celebrating the Eucharist or to have a good knowledge of Christian doctrine.  Our faith is authentic when it embraces our whole life, when it becomes a criterion for our decisions, when it makes us women and men committed to doing what is right and who take risks out of love, even as Jesus did. He did not choose the easy path of success or power; instead, in order to save us, he loved us to the point of walking through the “narrow gate” of the Cross. Jesus is the true measure of our faith; he is the gate through which we must pass in order to be saved (cf. Jn 10:9) by experiencing his love and by working, in our daily lives, to promote justice and peace.

형제자매 여러분, 오늘 복음에서 우리에게 제시된 이 도전은 생각해 볼 가치가 있습니다. 우리는 때때로 신앙에서 멀어진 사람들에게 비판적일 수 있는 반면에 예수님께서는 “믿는 사람들의 안전”이란 문제를 제기하십니다. 예수님께서는 우리에게 말로 신앙을 서약하고, 성찬례를 참여함으로써 그분과 먹고 마시고, 그리스도교 교리에 대해 풍부한 지식을 갖는 것만으로는 충분하지 않다고 말씀하십니다. 우리의 신앙이 우리의 삶 전체를 아우르고, 우리의 결정의 기준이 되고, 우리를 옳은 일을 행하고, 예수님이 하셨듯이, 사랑 때문에 위험을 감수하는 남녀로 만들 때, 우리의 신앙이 비로소 참된 신앙이 됩니다. 예수님께서는 성공이나 권력의 쉬운 길을 택하지 않으셨습니다. 오히려 우리를 구원하기 위해 십자가의 “좁은 문”을 통해 걸으시기까지 우리를 사랑하셨습니다. 예수님께서는 우리 신앙의 참된 척도이십니다. 그분은 우리가 구원받기 위해 통과해야 할 문이십니다. (요한 10,9 참조) 그렇게 하기 위해 우리는 그분의 사랑을 체험하고, 일상생활 속에서 정의와 평화의 증진을 위해 일해야 합니다.

There are times when this involves making difficult and unpopular decisions, resisting our selfish inclinations, placing ourselves at the service of others, and persevering in doing what is right when the logic of evil seems to prevail, and so on. Once we cross that threshold, however, we will discover that life flourishes anew. From that moment on, we will enter into the immense heart of God and the joy of the eternal banquet that he has prepared for us.

이것은 어렵고 인기 없는 결정을 내리고, 우리의 이기적인 성향에 저항하고, 타인을 위해 봉사하고, 악의 논리가 만연해 보일 때에도 옳은 일을 꾸준히 행해야 하는 등의 일을 수반할 때가 있습니다. 하지만 그 문턱을 넘으면 삶이 새롭게 꽃피는 것을 깨닫게 될 것입니다. 바로 그 순간부터 우리는 하느님의 무한한 마음과 그분께서 우리를 위해 준비하신 영원한 만찬의 기쁨 속으로 들어가게 될 것입니다.

Let us ask the Virgin Mary to help us find the courage to pass through the “narrow gate” of the Gospel, so that we may open ourselves with joy to the wide embrace of God our loving Father.

Dear brothers and sisters, I express my closeness to the people of Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, who have become victims of an unsecure and violent situation that continues to cause death and displacement. In asking you not to forget these brothers and sisters of ours, I invite you to pray for them, and I express my hope that the efforts of the country’s leaders will succeed in restoring security and peace in that territory.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 모잠비크 카보델가도 주민들에게 깊은 애도를 표합니다. 이들은 계속해서 죽음과 피난민이 발생을 야기하는 불안하고 폭력적인 상황의 희생자들입니다. 우리의 형제자매인 이들을 잊지 마시고, 그들을 위해 기도해 주시기를 간곡히 부탁드립니다. 또한 모잠비크 지도자들의 노력이 이 지역의 안보와 평화를 회복하는 데 성공하기를 간절히 바랍니다.

This past Friday, 22 August, we accompanied with our prayers and fasting our brothers and sisters who are suffering because of wars. Today, we join our Ukrainian brothers and sisters who, with the spiritual initiative “World Prayer for Ukraine,” are asking the Lord to grant peace to their tormented country.

지난 8월 22일 금요일, 우리는 전쟁으로 고통 받는 형제자매들을 위해 기도와 금식으로 함께했습니다. 오늘 우리는 "우크라이나를 위한 세계기도"라는 영적 활동을 통해 고통 받는 조국에 평화를 주시기를 주님께 간구하는 우크라이나 형제자매들과 함께합니다.

I greet all of you, the faithful of Rome and pilgrims from various countries, especially those from Karaganda (Kazakhstan), Budapest and the seminarians and faculty of the Pontifical North American College. I am pleased to welcome the Gozzano Music Band and the parish groups from Bellagio, Vidigulfo, Carbonia, Corlo and Val Cavallina. I also greet the faithful who have come by bicycle from Rovato and Manerbio, and the itinerate Via Lucis group. I wish everyone a happy Sunday.
