Pope's Homily at the Mass in Mongolia, Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, “Steppe Arena” (Ulaanbaatar), 3 September 2023

With the words of the Responsorial Psalm, we prayed: “O God... my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water” (Ps 63:2). This magnificent plea accompanies our journey through life, amid all the deserts we are called to traverse. It is precisely in those deserts that we hear the good news that we are not alone in our journey; those times of dryness cannot render our lives barren forever; our cry of thirst does not go unheard. God the Father has sent his Son to give us the living water of the Holy Spirit to satisfy our souls (cf. Jn 4:10). Jesus, as we heard in the Gospel, shows us the way to quench our thirst. It is the way of love, which he followed even to the cross, and on which he calls us to follow him, losing our lives in order to find them (cf. Mt 16:24-25).

우리는 다음과 같은 화답송 시편의 말씀으로 기도했습니다. “오 하느님, 제 영혼 당신을 목말라하나이다. 물기 없이 마르고 메마른 땅에서, 이 몸은 당신을 애타게 그리나이다.” (시편 63,2) 이 장엄한 간청은 우리가 횡단하도록 부름 받은 모든 사막 가운데서 우리 삶의 여정과 함께 합니다. 우리의 여정에서 우리가 혼자가 아니라는 희소식을 듣는 곳이 바로 그 사막들입니다. 메마름의 그 시간들이 우리의 삶을 영원한 불모지로 만들 수 없습니다. 하느님께서 우리의 목마른 외침을 들어주십니다. 하느님 아버지께서 우리 영혼을 만족시키기 위해 성령의 생수를 우리에게 주시려고 당신 아들을 보내셨습니다. (요한 4,10 참조) 우리가 복음에서 들은 것처럼 예수님께서는 우리의 갈증을 해소시키는 길을 보여 주십니다. 그것은 사랑의 길로서 예수님께서 십자가까지 따르셨고 그 길에서 예수님께서 당신을 따르라고 우리를 부르십니다. 그 길에서 우리가 목숨을 잃으면 목숨을 얻을 것이라고 말씀하십니다. (마태 16,24-25 참조)

Let us reflect together on these two things: the thirst within us, and the love that quenches that thirst.

우리 함께 이 두 가지 즉 우리 안의 갈증과 그 갈증을 해소시키는 사랑에 대해 생각해봅시다.

First, we are called to acknowledge the thirst within us. The Psalmist cries out to God in his aridity, for his life has become like a desert. His words have a particular resonance in a land like Mongolia: immense, rich in history and culture, yet a land also marked by the aridity of the steppes and the desert. Many of you know both the satisfaction and the fatigue of journeying, which evokes a fundamental aspect of biblical spirituality represented by Abraham and, in a broader sense, by the people of Israel and indeed every disciple of the Lord. For all of us are “God’s nomads”, pilgrims in search of happiness, wayfarers thirsting for love. The desert of which the Psalmist speaks, then, is our life. We are that dry land thirsting for fresh water, water that can slake our deepest thirst. Our hearts long to discover the secret of true joy, a joy that even in the midst of existential aridity, can accompany and sustain us.

첫째, 우리는 우리 안에 있는 목마름을 인정하라는 부르심을 받습니다. 시편 작자는 그의 삶이 사막과 같이 되었기 때문에 메마른 삶 속에서 하느님께 부르짖습니다. 그의 말은 몽골과 같은 땅에서 특별한 반향을 일으킵니다. 몽골은 광대하고 풍부한 역사와 문화를 지니고 있고 또한 대초원과 사막의 건조함의 특징을 갖고 있는 땅입니다. 여러분 중 많은 분이 여행의 만족과 피로를 모두 알고 계십니다. 그 만족과 피로는 아브라함과 더 넓은 의미에서 이스라엘 백성, 그리고 진정 모든 주님의 제자들이 보여준 성경적 영성의 근본적인 측면을 불러일으킵니다. 우리 모두는 “하느님의 유랑민”, 행복을 찾는 순례자, 사랑을 갈망하는 나그네이기 때문입니다. 그렇다면 시편 작자가 말하는 사막은 우리의 삶입니다. 우리는 신선한 물, 우리의 깊은 갈증을 풀어주는 물을 갈망하는 그 마른 땅입니다. 우리 마음은 참된 기쁨, 실존적 메마름 가운데에서도 우리와 동행하고 우리를 지탱해줄 기쁨의 비밀을 발견하기를 갈망합니다.

Deep within us, we have an insatiable thirst for happiness; we seek meaning and direction in our lives, a reason for all that we do each day. More than anything, we thirst for love, for only love can truly satisfy us, bring us fulfilment; only love can make us happy, inspire inner assurance and allow us to savour the beauty of life. Dear brothers and sisters, the Christian faith is the answer to this thirst; it takes it seriously, without dismissing it or trying to replace it with tranquilizers or surrogates. For in this thirst lies the great mystery of our humanity: it opens our hearts to the living God, the God of love, who comes to meet us and to make us his children, brothers and sisters to one another.

우리의 깊은 내면에 행복에 대한 끝없는 갈증이 있습니다. 우리는 우리 삶의 의미와 방향, 우리가 매일 하는 모든 일의 이유를 찾습니다. 무엇보다도 우리는 사랑에 목말라합니다. 사랑만이 진정 우리를 만족시키고 우리에게 충만감을 가져다주기 때문입니다. 사랑만이 우리를 행복하게 할 수 있고 내적 확신을 고취시키고 우리가 삶의 아름다움을 음미하도록 합니다. 사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 크리스천 신앙이 이 갈증에 대한 답입니다. 크리스천 신앙은 갈증을 진지하게 다루며 갈증을 무시하거나 진정제나 대체제로 그것을 바꾸려고 하지 않습니다. 이 갈증 속에 우리 인류의 위대한 신비가 깔려있기 때문입니다. 갈증은 우리를 만나러 오시고 우리를 자녀로 만드시고, 서로에게 형제자매로 만드시기 위해 오시는 살아계신 하느님, 사랑의 하느님께 우리의 마음을 열어줍니다.

This brings us to the second thing: the love that quenches our thirst. First was our deep, existential thirst, and now we reflect on the love that quenches our thirst. This is the heart of the Christian faith: God, who is Love, has drawn near to you, to me, to everyone, in his Son Jesus, and wants to share in your life, your work, your dreams and your thirst for happiness. It is true that, at times, we feel like a “dry and weary land where there is no water”, yet it is equally true that God cares for us and offers us clear, refreshing water, the living water of the Spirit, springing up within us to renew us and free us from the risk of drought. Jesus gives us that water.

이제 두 번째, 우리의 갈증을 푸는 사랑을 보겠습니다. 첫째는 우리의 깊은 실존적 갈증이고 이제 우리의 갈증을 해소시키는 사랑을 생각해봅시다. 이것이 크리스천 신앙의 핵심입니다. 사랑이신 하느님께서는 당신의 아들 예수님 안에서 당신에게, 나에게, 모든 사람에게 가까이 오셨고, 당신의 삶, 당신의 일, 당신의 꿈과 행복에 대한 당신의 갈증을 함께 나누기를 원하십니다. 때때로 우리는 “물이 없는 메마르고 고달픈 땅”처럼 느끼는 것이 사실입니다. 그러나 하느님께서 우리를 돌보시고, 맑고 신선한 물, 성령의 생수, 우리를 새롭게 하시고 가뭄의 위험에서 우리를 해방시키며 우리 안에 샘솟는 성령의 생수를 주시는 것도 사실입니다. 예수님께서 그 물을 우리에게 주십니다.

As Saint Augustine tells us, “…if we recognize ourselves in those who thirst, we can also recognize ourselves in those who quench that thirst” (On the Psalms, 63:1). Indeed, if in this life we often experience the desert with loneliness, fatigue and emptiness, we should also remember, with Augustine, that, “lest we grow faint in this desert, God refreshes us with the dew of his word… True, he makes us feel thirst, but then comes to satisfy that thirst… God has been merciful to us; he has opened for us a highway in the desert: our Lord Jesus Christ”. And that is the path through the desert of our lives. “He has offered us a source of consolation in that desert: the preachers of his word. He has offered us water in that desert, by filling those preachers with the Holy Spirit, so as to create, in them, a fount of water springing up to life everlasting” (ibid., 1, 6).

These words, dear friends, speak to you of your own history. Amid the deserts of life and in the difficulties associated with being a small community, the Lord has ensured that you not lack the water of his word, thanks especially to the preachers and missionaries who, anointed by the Holy Spirit, sow among you the seeds of its beauty. That word always brings us back to what is essential, to the very heart of our faith: allowing ourselves to be loved by God and in turn to make our lives an offering of love. For love alone truly quenches our thirst. Let us never forget: love alone truly quenches our thirst.

사랑하는 친구 여러분, 이 말씀은 여러분에게 여러분 자신의 역사에 대해 이야기합니다. 주님께서는 특별히 성령의 도유를 받아 여러분 가운데 아름다운 말씀의 씨앗을 뿌린 설교자들과 선교사들을 보내시어 사막과 작은 공동체 특유의 어려움 가운데에 있는 여러분에게 그분 말씀의 물이 부족하지 않도록 보장하셨습니다. 그 말씀은 항상 우리를 본질로, 우리 신앙의 핵심으로 다시 데려가줍니다. 하느님의 사랑을 받도록 우리 자신을 맡기고, 그 다음 순서로 우리의 삶을 사랑의 봉헌으로 만드는 것입니다. 사랑만이 진정으로 우리의 갈증을 풀어주기 때문입니다. 절대로 잊지 맙시다. 사랑만이 진정으로 우리의 갈증을 풀어줍니다.

That is precisely what Jesus tells the apostle Peter in today’s Gospel. Peter cannot accept the fact that Jesus must suffer, be charged by the leaders of the people, undergo his passion and then die on the cross. Peter reacts, he protests, he tries to convince Jesus that he is wrong, because, in Peter’s mind – and we too often have the same idea – the Messiah cannot possibly end in failure, dying on a cross like a criminal forsaken by God. The Lord then rebukes Peter because he thinks “as the world does”, and not as God does (cf. Mt 16:21-23).

그것이 바로 오늘 복음에서 예수님께서 사도 베드로에게 말씀하시는 것입니다. 베드로는 예수님께서 고난을 받으시고, 백성의 지도자들에게 고발당하시고, 수난을 겪으시고, 십자가에서 돌아가셔야 한다는 사실을 받아들일 수 없습니다. 베드로는 반발하고 항의하고 예수님께 그럴 리 없다고 납득시키려고 노력합니다. 베드로의 생각에는 - 우리도 종종 같은 생각을 합니다. - 메시아께서 하느님의 버림을 받은 범죄자처럼 십자가에서 죽으시고 실패로 끝날 리가 없기 때문입니다. 그러자 주님께서는 베드로가 “사람의 일만” 생각하고 하느님의 일은 생각하지 않는다고 꾸짖으십니다. (마태 16,21-23 참조)

If we think that success, power, or material things suffice to satisfy the thirst in our lives, then we are thinking as the world does. That kind of worldliness leads nowhere; indeed, it leaves us thirstier than before. Jesus instead shows us the way: “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it” (Mt 16:24-25).

우리가 우리의 삶의 갈증을 성공, 권력, 물질적인 것으로 충분히 풀 수 있다고 생각한다면 우리는 세상적으로 생각하고 있습니다. 그런 세상적인 태도는 아무 도움이 안 됩니다. 오히려 우리를 더 목마르게 합니다. 그래서 예수님께서 우리에게 길을 보여주십니다. “누구든지 내 뒤를 따라오려면, 자신을 버리고 제 십자가를 지고 나를 따라야 한다. 정녕 자기 목숨을 구하려는 사람은 목숨을 잃을 것이고, 나 때문에 자기 목숨을 잃는 사람은 목숨을 얻을 것이다.” (마태오 16, 24-25)

This, dear brothers and sisters, is surely the best way: to embrace the cross of Christ. At the heart of Christianity is an amazing and extraordinary message. If you lose your life, if you make it a generous offering in service, if you risk it by choosing to love, if you make it a free gift for others, then it will return to you in abundance, and you will be overwhelmed by endless joy, peace of heart, and inner strength and support; and we need inner peace.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 그리스도의 십자가를 받아들이는 것, 이것이 확실히 가장 좋은 길입니다. 그리스도교의 핵심은 놀랍고 특별한 메시지입니다. 만일 당신이 목숨을 잃으면, 당신이 목숨을 봉사의 관대한 제물로 내놓으면, 당신이 사랑을 선택함으로써 목숨의 위험을 무릅쓰면, 당신이 목숨을 타인을 위한 무상의 선물로 내어놓으면, 당신은 목숨을 풍성하게 되돌려 받을 것이고, 당신은 끝없는 기쁨, 마음의 평화, 내적인 힘과 지원으로 압도될 것입니다. 우리에게 내면의 평화가 필요합니다.

This is the truth that Jesus wants us to discover, the truth he wants to reveal to all of you and to this land of Mongolia. You need not be famous, rich or powerful to be happy. No! Only love satisfies our hearts’ thirst, only love heals our wounds, only love brings us true joy. This is the way that Jesus taught us; this is the path that he opened up before us.

이것이 바로 예수님께서 우리가 발견하기를 원하시는 진리이며, 여러분 모두와 이 몽골 땅에 드러내고자 하시는 진리입니다. 행복하기 위해 유명하거나 부자이거나 권력자일 필요가 없습니다. 아닙니다. 사랑만이 우리 마음의 갈증을 풀어주고 사랑만이 우리의 상처를 치유하며, 사랑만이 우리에게 참된 기쁨을 가져다줍니다. 이것이 예수님께서 우리에게 가르치신 길이고, 이것이 그분이 우리 앞에 열어주신 행로입니다.

May we too, dear brothers and sisters, heed what the Lord said to Peter in response: “Get behind me” (Mt 16:23). In other words, be my disciple, walk in my footsteps and stop thinking as the world does. If we do this, we will be able, with the grace of Christ and the Holy Spirit, to journey along the path of love. Even when love calls for denying ourselves, combatting our personal and worldly forms of selfishness, and taking the risk of living a life of genuine fraternity. For while it is true that all these things entail effort and sacrifice, and sometimes taking up the cross, it is even more true that, when we lose our lives for the sake of the Gospel, the Lord gives them back to us abundantly, in the fullness of love and joy for all eternity.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 우리도 주님께서 베드로에게 “내게서 물러가라.” (마태 16,23)고 하신 말씀을 곰곰이 생각해볼까요? 그 말씀은 다시 말해서 나의 제자가 되어라, 나의 발자취를 따르고, 세상적으로 생각하는 것을 멈추어라! 입니다. 그렇게 하면 우리는 그리스도와 성령의 은총으로 사랑의 길을 따르는 여행을 할 수 있을 것입니다. 사랑이 우리 자신을 부인하고, 개인적이고 세속적인 형태의 이기심과 싸우고, 진정한 형제애의 삶을 살 위험을 감수할 것을 요구할 때에도 말입니다. 이 모든 것에는 노력과 희생이 수반되고 때로는 십자가를 지는 것도 사실이지만, 우리가 복음을 위해 목숨을 잃으면 주님께서 영원토록 충만한 사랑과 기쁨 안에 그 목숨을 우리에게 풍성히 돌려주시는 것이 더욱 사실이기 때문입니다.
