HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS, “John Garang” Mausoleum (Juba), Sunday, 5 February 2023

Today I would like to make my own the words that the Apostle Paul addressed to the community of Corinth in the second reading and repeat them here before you: “When I came to you, brethren, I did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified” (1 Cor 2:1-2). Yes, Paul’s concern is also mine, as I gather here with you in the name of Jesus Christ, the God of love, the God who achieved peace through his cross; Jesus, the God crucified for us all; Jesus, crucified in those who suffer; Jesus, crucified in the lives of so many of you, in so many people in this country; Jesus, the risen Lord, the victor over evil and death.
I have come here to proclaim him and to confirm you in him, for the message of Christ is a message of hope. Jesus knows your anguish and the hope you bear in your hearts, the joys and struggles that mark your lives, the darkness that assails you and the faith that, like a song in the night, you raise to heaven. Jesus knows you and loves you. If we remain in him, we must never fear, because for us too, every cross will turn into a resurrection, every sadness into hope, and every lament into dancing.

오늘 저는 제2독서에서 사도 바오로가 코린토 공동체에 한 말을 그대로 여러분에게 말씀드리고 싶습니다. “형제 여러분, 나는 여러분에게 갔을 때에, 뛰어난 말이나 지혜로 하느님의 신비를 선포하려고 가지 않았습니다. 나는 여러분 가운데에 있으면서 예수 그리스도 곧 십자가에 못 박히신 분 외에는 아무것도 생각하지 않기로 결심하였습니다.” (코린토 1서 2,1-2) 예, 사랑의 하느님, 그분의 십자가로 평화를 이루신 하느님, 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 여러분과 함께 이곳에 모인 저의 마음 또한 바오로의 마음과 같습니다. 예수님은 우리 모두를 위해 십자가에 못 박히신 하느님, 예수님은 고통 받는 사람들 안에서 십자가에 목 박히신 분, 예수님은 수많은 여러분의 삶 안에서, 이 나라의 수많은 사람들 안에서 십자가에 못 박히신 분, 예수님은 악과 죽음을 이기신 분, 부활하신 주님이십니다. 저는 그분을 선포하고 그분 안에 여러분을 굳세게 하기 위해서 여기에 왔습니다. 그리스도의 메시지는 희망의 메시지이기 때문입니다. 예수님은 여러분의 고뇌와 마음에 간직한 희망, 여러분의 삶을 특징짓는 기쁨과 투쟁, 여러분을 덮치는 어둠 그리고 여러분이 밤의 노래처럼 하늘로 올리는 믿음을 알고 계십니다. 예수님은 여러분을 아시고 여러분을 사랑하십니다. 우리가 그분 안에 머무르면 우리는 절대로 두렵지 않습니다. 우리에게도 모든 십자가는 부활로, 모든 슬픔은 희망으로, 모든 탄식은 춤으로 바뀔 것이기 때문입니다.

I would like to reflect, then, on the words of life that our Lord Jesus spoke to us in today’s Gospel: “You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world” (Mt 5:13-14). What do these images say to us, as disciples of Christ?

다음으로 저는 오늘 복음에서 우리 주 예수님께서 우리에게 말씀하신 생명의 말씀을 묵상하고 싶습니다. “너희는 세상의 소금이다.... 너희는 세상의 빛이다.” (마태오 5, 13-14) 이 이미지들은 그리스도의 제자인 우리에게 무엇을 말합니까?

First of all, that we are the salt of the earth. Salt is used to season food. It is the unseen ingredient that gives flavour to everything. Precisely for this reason, since ancient times, salt has been a symbol of wisdom, a virtue that cannot be seen, but that adds zest to life, which without it becomes insipid, tasteless. Yet what kind of wisdom does Jesus mean? He uses the image of salt immediately after teaching his disciples the Beatitudes. We see, then, that the Beatitudes are the salt of the Christian life, because they bring the wisdom of heaven down to earth. They revolutionize the standards of this world and our usual way of thinking. And what do they say? In a word, they tell us that to be blessed, to be happy and fulfilled, we must not aim to be strong, rich and powerful, but humble, meek, merciful; to do no evil to anyone, but to be peacemakers for everyone. This, Jesus says, is the wisdom of a disciple; it is what gives flavour to the world around us. Let us remember this: if we put the Beatitudes into practice, if we embody the wisdom of Christ, we will give savour not only to our own lives, but also to the life of society and of the country in which we live.

첫째, 우리는 세상의 소금입니다. 소금은 음식에 간을 맞추는데 사용됩니다. 모든 것에 맛을 내는 보이지 않는 재료입니다. 바로 이러한 이유로 고대부터 소금은 지혜 즉 눈에 보이지 않지만 그것이 없으면 무미건조하고 맛도 없게 되는, 삶에 풍미를 더해 주는 미덕의 상징이었습니다. 그런데 예수님께서 말씀하신 지혜는 어떤 종류의 지혜입니까? 그분은 제자들에게 참 행복을 가르치신 직후에 소금의 이미지를 말씀하십니다. 그래서 우리는 참 행복이 그리스도인의 삶의 소금임을 알 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 참 행복은 하늘의 지혜를 땅으로 가져오기 때문입니다. 참 행복은 이 세상의 기준과 우리의 일상적인 사고방식을 혁신합니다. 그러면 참 행복은 우리에게 무엇을 말합니까? 한 마디로 우리가 축복받고 행복하고 충만해지려면 강하고 부유하고 권력 있는 것을 목표로 하지 않고, 겸손하고 온유하고 자비롭게 되는 것을 목표로 하라고 말합니다. 누구에게도 악을 행하지 않고 모든 사람을 위해 평화를 이루는 사람이 되어야 합니다. 이것이 제자의 지혜라고 예수님은 말씀하십니다. 그것은 우리 주변의 세상에 풍미를 주는 것입니다. 이것을 기억합시다. 우리가 참 행복을 실천하고 그리스도의 지혜를 구현하면 우리는 우리 자신의 삶뿐만 아니라 우리가 살고 있는 사회와 국가의 삶에도 풍미를 줄 것입니다.

Salt does not only bring out flavor; it also has another function, which was essential at the time of Christ: it preserves food so that it does not spoil and go bad. The Bible had said that there is one “food”, one essential good that is to be preserved above all others, and that is the covenant with God. So in those days, whenever an offering was made to the Lord, a little salt was added to it. Let us hear what Scripture says about this: “You shall not let the salt of the covenant with your God be lacking from your cereal offering; with all your offerings you shall offer salt” (Lev 2:13). Salt thus served as a reminder of our basic need to preserve our relationship with God, because he is faithful to us, and his covenant with us is incorruptible, inviolable and enduring (cf. Num 18:19; 2 Chr 13:5). It follows that every disciple of Jesus, as the salt of the earth, is a witness to the covenant that God has made and that we celebrate in every Mass: a new, eternal and unbreakable covenant (cf. 1 Cor 11:25; Heb 9), and a love for us that cannot be shaken even by our infidelity.

소금은 맛만 내는 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 또한 그리스도 시대에 필수적인 또 다른 기능을 가지고 있습니다. 음식이 상하지 않고 부패하지 않도록 보존하는 것입니다. 성경에 다른 어떤 것보다 보존해야 할 하나의 본질적인 선인 “음식”이 있으며, 그것이 하느님과의 계약이라고 쓰여 있습니다. 그래서 그 당시에는 주님께 희생제물을 바칠 때마다 약간의 소금을 추가했습니다. 이것에 대해 성경은 어떻게 얘기하는지 들어봅시다. “너희가 바치는 곡식 제물에 너희 하느님과 맺은 계약의 소금을 빼놓아서는 안 된다. 너희의 모든 예물과 함께 소금도 바쳐야 한다.” (레위기 2,13) 따라서 소금은 하느님과 우리의 관계를 보존해야 할 기본적인 필요성을 일깨워 주는 역할을 했습니다. 그분은 우리에게 신실하시며 우리와 맺은 그분의 계약은 썩지 않고 어길 수 없으며 영원하기 때문입니다. (민수 18,19; 역대기 하 13,5 참조) 예수님의 모든 제자 각자는 세상의 소금으로서 하느님께서 맺으셨고 우리가 매 미사에서 거행하는 계약, 즉 새롭고 영원하며 깨뜨릴 수 없는 계약, (코린토 1서 11,25; 히브리서 9) 우리의 불충실에도 흔들리지 않는 우리를 향한 사랑의 증인입니다.

Brothers and sisters, we are witnesses to this wonder. In ancient times, when people or peoples established a pact of friendship with one another, they often sealed it by exchanging a little salt. As the salt of the earth, we are called to bear witness to the covenant with God with joy and gratitude, and thus show that we are people capable of creating bonds of friendship and fraternal living. People capable of building good human relationships as a way of curbing the corruption of evil, the disease of division, the filth of fraudulent business dealings and the plague of injustice.

형제자매 여러분, 우리는 이 놀라운 일의 증인입니다. 고대에는 사람들이나 민족들이 서로 우정의 계약을 맺을 때 종종 약간의 소금을 교환함으로써 그것을 봉인했습니다. 우리는 세상의 소금으로서 기쁨과 감사로 하느님과 맺은 계약을 증거하도록 부르심을 받았습니다. 그리하여 우리는 우정과 형제애의 유대를 맺을 수 있는 사람들임을 보여 주어야 합니다. 악의 부패, 분열의 질병, 사기 거래의 불결함, 불의의 전염병을 억제하는 방법으로 좋은 인간관계를 구축할 수 있는 사람들입니다.

Today I would like to thank you, because you are the salt of the earth in this country. Yet, when you consider its many wounds, the violence that increases the venom of hatred, and the injustice that causes misery and poverty, you may feel small and powerless. Whenever that temptation assails you, try looking at salt and its tiny grains. Salt is a tiny ingredient and, once placed on food, it disappears, it dissolves; yet precisely in that way it seasons the whole dish. In the same way, even though we are tiny and frail, even when our strength seems paltry before the magnitude of our problems and the blind fury of violence, we Christians are able to make a decisive contribution to changing history. Jesus wants us to be like salt: a mere pinch dissolves and gives a different flavour to everything. Consequently, we cannot step back, because without that little pinch, without our small contribution, everything becomes insipid.

오늘 저는 여러분이 이 땅의 소금이기 때문에 여러분에게 감사하고 싶습니다. 그러나 여러분이 그 많은 상처, 증오의 독을 증가시키는 폭력, 불행과 빈곤을 야기하는 불의를 생각할 때  여러분은 작고 무력하다고 느낄 수 있습니다. 그 유혹이 당신을 공격할 때마다 소금과 그 작은 알갱이를 보도록 하십시오. 소금은 아주 작은 성분이며 일단 음식에 넣으면 사라지고 용해됩니다. 그러나 정확히 그런 식으로 요리 전체에 맛을 냅니다. 이처럼 우리가 비록 작고 나약하지만, 우리의 문제의 크기와 폭력의 맹렬한 분노 앞에 우리의 힘이 보잘것없어 보일 때에도 우리 그리스도인들은 역사를 바꾸는 데 결정적으로 기여할 수 있습니다. 예수님은 우리가 소금과 같기를 원하십니다. 단지 두 손까락으로 집을 양의 소금이 녹아서 모든 것에 맛을 냅니다. 결과적으로 우리는 뒤로 물러설 수 없습니다. 그 작은 양의 소금 없이는 우리의 작은 기여 없이는 모든 것이 무미건조해지기 때문입니다.

So let us start from the little things, the essential things, not from what may appear in the history books, but from what changes history. In the name of Jesus and of his Beatitudes, let us lay down the weapons of hatred and revenge, in order to take up those of prayer and charity. Let us overcome the dislikes and aversions that over time have become chronic and risk pitting tribes and ethnic groups against one another. Let us learn to apply the salt of forgiveness to our wounds; salt burns but it also heals. Even if our hearts bleed for the wrongs we have suffered, let us refuse, once and for all, to repay evil with evil, and we will grow healthy within. Let us accept one another and love one another with sincerity and generosity, as God loves us. Let us cherish the good that we are, and not allow ourselves to be corrupted by evil!

그러니 작은 것부터, 본질적인 것부터 시작합시다. 즉 역사책에 나오는 것부터가 아니라 역사를 바꾸는 것부터 시작합시다. 예수님과 그분의 참 행복의 이름으로, 기도와 사랑의 무기를 들기 위해서 증오와 복수의 무기를 내려놓읍시다. 시간이 지남에 따라 고질화되고 부족과 민족을 서로 적대시할 위험에 빠뜨리는 반감과 혐오감을 극복하도록 합시다. 우리들의 상처에 용서의 소금을 바르는 법을 배웁시다. 소금은 타지만 치유하기도 합니다. 우리가 당한 잘못 때문에 우리의 마음이 피를 흘릴지라도 악을 악으로 갚는 것을 한 번에 영원히 거절하여 우리가 내적으로 건강해지도록 합시다. 하느님께서 우리를 사랑하시는 것과 같이 성실함과 관대함으로 서로를 받아들이고 사랑합시다. 우리 자신의 선함을 소중히 여기고 악에 의해 더럽혀지지 않도록 합시다!

Let us now pass to the second image used by Jesus, which is light: You are the light of the world. A great prophecy was told of Israel: “I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth” (Is 49:6). Now that prophecy has been fulfilled, because God the Father has sent his Son, who is the light of the world (cf. Jn 8:12), the true light that enlightens every person and every people, the light that shines in the darkness and dispels every cloud of gloom (cf. Jn 1:5.9). Jesus, the light of the world, tells his disciples that they, too, are the light of the world. This means that, when we receive the light of Christ, the light that is Christ, we become “luminous”; we radiate the light of God!

이제 예수님께서 사용하신 두 번째 이미지인 빛으로 넘어갑시다. 여러분은 세상의 빛입니다. 이스라엘에 대한 위대한 예언이 있었습니다. “나의 구원이 땅 끝까지 다다르도록 나는 너를 민족들의 빛으로 세운다.” (이사야 49,6) 이제 그 예언은 아버지 하느님께서 세상의 빛이신 당신의 아들을 보내셨기 때문에 이루어졌습니다. (요한 8,12 참조) 모든 사람과 모든 백성을 비추는 진정한 빛, 어둠에서 빛나고 모든 어둠의 구름을 몰아내는 빛이십니다. (요한 1,5.9 참조) 세상의 빛이신 예수님께서 제자들에게 그들도 세상의 빛이라고 말씀하십니다. 이것은 우리가 그리스도의 빛, 곧 그리스도이신 빛을 받을 때 우리가 “빛나”게 되는 것을 의미합니다. 우리가 하느님의 빛을 발산합니다!

Jesus goes on to say: “A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house” (Mt 5:15). Again, this was a familiar image in those days. Many villages in Galilee were built on hillsides and were visible from a great distance. Lamps in houses were placed high up, so that they could illumine all the corners of a room. When a lamp was extinguished, it was covered with a piece of terracotta called a “bushel”, which deprived the flame of oxygen and thus put out its light.

예수께서는 계속해서 말씀하십니다. “산위에 자리 잡은 고을은 감추어질 수 없다. 등불을 켜서 함지 속이 아니라 동경 위에 놓는다. 그렇게 하여 집 안에 있는 모든 사람을 비춘다.” (마태오 5, 14-15) 다시 말해 이것은 그 당시에 친숙한 이미지였습니다. 갈릴래아의 많은 마을은 산위에 지어져서 멀리서도 볼 수 있었습니다. 집안의 등불은 높은 곳에 놓여서 집안의 구석구석을 비출 수 있도록 했습니다. 등불을 끌 때는 “함지”라고 하는 테라코타 조각으로 덮어서 산소 불꽃을 제거하여 끕니다.

Brothers and sisters, it is clear what Jesus means by asking us to be the light of the world: we, who are his disciples, are called to shine forth like a city set on a hill, like a lamp whose flame may never be extinguished. In other words, before we worry about the darkness surrounding us, before we hope that the shadows around us will lighten, we are called to radiate light, to give brightness to our cities, our villages and homes, our acquaintances and all our daily activities by our lives and good works. The Lord will give us strength, the strength to be light in him, so that everyone will see our good works, and seeing them, as Jesus reminds us, they will rejoice in God and give him glory.

형제자매 여러분, 예수님께서 우리에게 세상의 빛이 되라고 하신 말씀의 의미는 분명합니다. 그분의 제자인 우리는 산위에 세워진 고을처럼, 언덕 위에 세워진 도시처럼, 절대로 꺼지지 않는 등불처럼 빛나도록 부르심을 받았습니다. 즉, 우리를 둘러싼 어둠을 걱정하기 전에, 우리 주변의 그림자가 밝아지기를 바라기 전에, 우리의 도시, 마을, 가정, 우리의 지인들과 우리의 일상의 활동에 우리의 삶과 선행으로 빛을 발산하고 밝게 비추도록 부르심을 받았습니다. 주님께서 우리에게 힘을, 그분 안에 빛이 되는 힘을 주실 것입니다. 그래서 모든 사람들이 우리의 선행을 보게 하시고 예수님께서 우리에게 환기 시키신 대로 그들이 하느님 안에서 기뻐하고 하느님께 영광 돌릴 것입니다. 

If we live like sons and daughters, brothers and sisters on earth, people will come to know that all of us have a Father in heaven. We are being asked, then, to burn with love, never to let our light be extinguished, never to let the oxygen of charity fade from our lives so that the works of evil can take away the pure air of our witness. This country, so beautiful yet ravaged by violence, needs the light that each one of you has, or better, the light that each one of you is.

우리가 아들딸, 세상의 형제자매처럼 살면 사람들은 우리 모두가 하늘에 아버지를 갖고 있다는 것을 알게 될 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 사랑으로 불타고, 결코 우리의 빛이 꺼지지 않도록 하고, 우리의 삶에서 결코 사랑의 산소가 사라지지 않게 하도록 요청받고 있습니다. 그래서 악의 행위가 우리 증언의 순수한 공기를 앗아갈 수 없도록 해야 합니다. 너무나 아름답지만 폭력으로 황폐해진 이 나라는 여러분 각자가 가지고 있는 빛을, 더 나아가 빛인 여러분 각자를 필요로 합니다.

Dear brothers and sisters, I pray that you will be salt that spreads, dissolves and seasons South Sudan with the fraternal taste of the Gospel. May your Christian communities shine radiantly, so that, like cities built on a hill, they will shed the light of goodness on all and show that it is beautiful and possible to live with generosity and self-giving, to have hope, and together to build a reconciled future. Brothers and sisters, I am with you and I assure you of my prayer that you will experience the joy of the Gospel, the savour and the light that the Lord, “the God of peace” (Phil 4:9), the “God of all consolation” (2 Cor 1:3), desires to pour out upon every one of you.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 저는 여러분이 소금이 되어 뿌려지고, 용해되고, 복음의 형제적 맛으로 남 수단에 풍미를 주도록 기도합니다. 여러분의 그리스도인 공동체가 찬란하게 빛나서 산위에 세워진 고을처럼 모두에게 선의 빛을 비추고, 관대함과 희생으로 사는 것, 희망을 갖는 것, 그리고 함께 화해의 미래를 건설하는 것이 아름답고 가능하다는 것을 보여주길 바랍니다. 형제자매 여러분, 저는 여러분과 같이 있으며, 여러분이 복음의 기쁨, “평화의 하느님” (필립 4,9), “모든 화해의 하느님” (코린토 2서 1,3)이신 주님께서 여러분 각자에게 쏟아 부으시길 원하시는 풍미와 빛을 체험하도록 제가 기도하겠습니다.
