POPE FRANCIS ANGELUS, Fourth Sunday of Advent, Saint Peter's Square, 18 December 2022

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno! Today, the fourth and final Sunday of Advent, the liturgy presents the figure of Saint Joseph to us (cf. Mt 1:18-24). He is a just man who is about to get married. We can imagine what his dreams for the future are – a beautiful family, with an affectionate wife and many wonderful children, and a dignified job – simple and good dreams, the dreams of simple and good people. But all of a sudden, these dreams come up against a disconcerting discovery. Mary, his betrothed, is expecting a child, and the child is not his! What would Joseph have felt? Shock, pain, confusion, perhaps even irritation and disappointment…. But… He experienced his world was falling apart all around him! And what was he supposed to do?

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 대림 제 4주일이며 마지막 주일인 오늘의 전례는 성 요셉의 모습을 우리에게 보여줍니다. (마태오 1,18-24 참조) 요셉은 결혼을 앞둔 의로운 남자입니다. 그가 미래의 꿈을 어떻게 꾸고 있는지 상상할 수 있습니다. - 아름다운 가정, 다정한 아내와 많은 훌륭한 자녀, 품위 있는 직업 - 단순하고 좋은 꿈, 단순하고 선한 사람들의 꿈입니다. 그러나 갑자기 이러한 꿈은 당혹스러운 사실과 부딪히게 됩니다. 그의 약혼자 마리아가 아이를 배었는데 그 아이가 그의 아이가 아닙니다. 요셉은 어떻게 느꼈을까요? 충격, 고통, 혼란, 심지어 분노와 실망까지... 그는 자신의 세계가 온통 무너져 내리는 경험을 했습니다. 그는 어떻게 해야 했을까요?

The Law gives him two options. The first is to accuse Mary and make her pay the price for her alleged infidelity. The second is to secretly annul their engagement without exposing Mary to scandal and to harsh consequences, taking upon himself, however, the burden of shame. So, Joseph chooses this second option, which is the way of mercy. And behold, at the height of his crisis, right when he is thinking and evaluating all this, God gives him a new light in his heart – he declares to him in a dream that Mary’s motherhood did not come about because of a betrayal, but was the work of the Holy Spirit, and the baby to be born would be the Saviour (cf. vv. 20-21), and Mary would be the Mother of the Messiah, and he would be His guardian. On waking up, Joseph understands that the greatest dream of every devout Israelite – to be the father of the Messiah – was being fulfilled for him in a completely unexpected way.

To accomplish this, in fact, it was not enough to belong to David’s lineage and to be a faithful observer of the law, but he would need to entrust himself above and beyond all else to God, welcome Mary and her Son in a completely different way than was expected, differently than had ever been done. In other words, Joseph would have to renounce all reassuring certainties, his perfect plans, his legitimate expectations, and open himself to a future that was completely to be discovered. And before God, who disrupts his plans and asks that he trust Him, Joseph says “yes”. Joseph’s courage is heroic and is exercised in silence – his courage is to trust, he welcomes, he is willing, he asks for no further guarantees.

Brothers and sisters, what does Joseph say to us today? We too have our dreams, and perhaps we think of them more, we talk about them together at Christmas. Perhaps we lament over some dreams that have been shattered and we see that our best expectations often need to be put together with unexpected, disconcerting situations. And when this happens, Joseph shows us the way. We do not need to give in to negative feelings, like anger or isolation – this is the wrong way! Instead, we need to attentively welcome surprises, the surprises in life, even crises.
 
형제자매 여러분, 오늘 요셉은 우리에게 무엇을 얘기해줍니까? 우리도 꿈을 가지고 있고, 어쩌면 그 꿈을 더 중요하게 생각하고, 크리스마스에 꿈에 대해 함께 이야기를 나눌지 모릅니다. 아마도 우리는 못 이룬 꿈에 대해 한탄하고, 우리의 최선의 기대들이 종종 예상치 못한 당혹스런 상황과 결합되어야 한다는 것을 알게 될지 모릅니다. 이런 일이 일어날 때 요셉은 우리에게 길을 보여줍니다. 우리는 분노나 고립과 같은 부정적인 감정에 굴복할 필요가 없습니다. - 이것은 잘못된 방법입니다! 대신 우리는 놀라움, 삶의 놀라움, 위기까지도 주의 깊게 환영해야 합니다.

When we find ourselves in crisis, we should not make decisions quickly or instinctively, but let them pass through the sieve, like Joseph did who “considered everything” (cf. v. 20), and base ourselves on the underlying certainty of God’s mercy. When someone experiences a crisis without giving in to isolation, anger, and fear, but keeps the door open for God, He can intervene. He is an expert in transforming crises into dreams – yes, God opens crises into new horizons we never would have imagined before, perhaps not as we would expect, but in the way He knows how. And these, brothers and sisters, are God’s horizons – surprising – but infinitely more grand and beautiful than ours! May the Virgin Mary help us live open to God’s surprises.

우리가 위기에 처했을 때, 신속하게 또는 본능적으로 결정을 내리지 말고, "모든 것을 고려한" (20절 참조) 요셉이 그랬던 것처럼 체(망)를 통과하도록 두고, 우리자신을 근본적인 하느님 자비의 확실성에 맡겨야 합니다. 어떤 사람이 고립과 분노와 두려움에 굴복하지 않고 위기를 겪으면서 하느님을 향해 문을 열어 둘 때 하느님은 개입하실 수 있습니다. 그분은 위기를 꿈으로 바꾸는 전문가이십니다. 그렇습니다. 하느님은 위기를 우리가 전에 상상하지 못한, 아마 우리가 기대하지 못한 방법으로, 그러나 그분이 아시는 방법으로, 새로운 지평으로 여십니다. 형제자매 여러분, 이것이 하느님의 지평입니다. - 놀랍습니다. - 그러나 우리의 지평보다 무한하게 더 웅장하고 더 아름답습니다. 동정 마리아여, 저희가 하느님의 놀라움에 마음을 열고 살게 도와주소서!

After the Angelus

Dear brothers and sisters! I am concerned about the situation created in the Lachin Corridor in the Southern Caucasus. I am particularly concerned about the precarious humanitarian conditions of the population which risk further deterioration during the course of the winter season. I ask everyone involved to commit themselves to finding peaceful solutions for the good of the people.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분! 저는 남부 코카서스의 Lachin Corridor에서 발생한 상황에 대해 우려하고 있습니다. 저는 특히 겨울철 동안 더욱 악화될 위험이 있는 국민의 위태로운 인도주의적 상황에 대해 우려하고 있습니다. 관련된 모든 사람들이 사람들의 이익을 위한 평화로운 해결책을 찾는 데 헌신할 것을 요청합니다.

And in addition, let us also pray for peace in Peru, that the violence in that country might cease and that the path of dialogue might be embarked upon to overcome the political and social crisis that is afflicting the population.

또한 페루의 평화를 위하고, 폭력이 종식되고, 국민을 괴롭히는 정치적, 사회적 위기를 극복하기 위한 대화의 길이 열리도록 기도합시다.

I greet all of you affectionately, those of you who have come from Rome, from Italy and from many parts of the world. I especially greet members of the faithful from California, and those from Madrid, as well as the groups from Praia A Mare, Catania, Caraglio, and from the parish of Santi Protomartiri in Rome.

Let us ask the Virgin Mary, whom the liturgy invites us to contemplate on this Fourth Sunday of Advent, to touch the hearts of those who can stop the war in Ukraine. Let us not forget the suffering of those people, especially of the babies, the elderly, the people who are sick. Let us pray. Let us pray.
