POPE FRANCIS ANGELUS, Saint Peter's Square, Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 10 July 2022

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno! The Gospel of today’s Liturgy recounts the parable of the Good Samaritan (cf. Lk 10:25-37) – we all know it. In the backdrop is the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Jericho along which lies a man who had been beaten badly and robbed by brigands. A priest passing by sees him but does not stop; he keeps on going. A Levite, someone who performed services in the temple, does the same thing. “But a Samaritan”, the Gospel says, “as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion” (v. 33). Let us not forget this word – “he had compassion on him”.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 오늘 전례 복음은 우리 모두 잘 아는 착한 사마리아인의 비유를 이야기합니다. (루카 10,25-37 참조) 배경은 예루살렘에서 예리코로 가는 길에  강도들에게 심하게 구타를 당하고 강도를 당한 사람이 누워 있습니다. 지나가던 사제가 그를 보고도 멈추지 않습니다. 그는 계속 갑니다. 성전에서 봉사하는 레위인도 똑같이 합니다. 복음은 “그런데 여행을 하던 어떤 사마리아인은 그가 있는 곳에 이르러 그를 보고서는, 가엾은 마음이 들었다." (33절) 라고 말합니다. “가엾은 마음이 들었다.” 이 말을 잊지 맙시다.

This is what God feels every time he sees we are having a problem, we have sinned, we are experiencing misery. “He had compassion on him”. The Evangelist makes it a point to specify that this Samaritan was on a journey. So, even though he had his own plans and was heading toward a distant destination, that Samaritan does not come up with an excuse but allows himself to get involved, he allows himself to get involved with what had happened along the road. Let us think about this: isn’t the Lord teaching us to do just that? To look off into the distance, to our final destination, while paying close attention to the steps to take here and now in order to get there.

이것은 하느님이 우리가 문제를 안고 있고, 우리가 죄를 지고, 우리가 비참한 일을 겪고 있는 것을 보실 때마다 느끼시는 것입니다. “그를 보고서 가엾은 마음이 들었습니다.” 복음사가는 이 사마리아인이 여행 중에 있었다는 것을 명기하고 있습니다. 그래서 자신의 계획이 있고 먼 목적지를 향하고 있었음에도 불구하고 그 사마리아인은 핑계를 대지 않고 자신이 관여하도록 허용합니다. 자신이 길가에 일어난 일에 간여하도록 허용합니다. 이것에 대해 생각해 봅시다. 주님은 우리에게 바로 그렇게 하라고 가르치고 계시지 않습니까? 목적지에 이르기 위해서 지금 여기에 내디뎌야 하는 발걸음에 세심한 주의를 기울이면서 멀리, 우리의 최종 목적지를 내다보라고 하십니다.

It is significant that the first Christians were called “disciples of the Way” (cf. Acts 9:2). In fact, the believer strongly resembles the Samaritan – like him, the believer is on a journey, is a wayfarer. The believer knows they have not “arrived”, but wants to learn each day, following the Lord Jesus who said: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (Jn 14:6), “I am the way”. The disciple of Christ walks along following Him and thus becomes a “disciple of the Way”. He or she goes behind the Lord, is not sedentary, no, but is always on the way. Along the way, he or she meets people, heals the sick, visits villages and cities. This is what the Lord did, he was always on the move.

최초의 그리스도인들이 “길(道)의 제자들” (사도행전 9,2 참조) 로 불렸다는 것은 의미심장합니다. 사실, 신자는 사마리아인과 매우 흡사합니다. - 그 사람처럼 신자는 여행 중에 있는 나그네입니다. 나그네는 “도착하지” 않았다는 것을 알지만 “나는 길이요 진리요 생명이다.” (요한 14,6) 라고 말씀하신 주 예수님을 따르며 날마다 배우기를 원합니다. “나는 길이다.” 그리스도의 제자는 그분을 따라 걷고 그래서 “길의 제자”가 됩니다. 그는 주님의 뒤를 가고 정주하지 않습니다. 아닙니다. 그는 항상 길 위에 있습니다. 길을 따라서 그는 사람들을 만나고 병자를 치유하고 마을과 도시를 방문합니다. 이것이 주님께서 하셨던 일이고 그분은 항상 움직이셨습니다.   

The “disciple of the Way”, that is, we Christians, observes, therefore, that his or her way of thinking and of acting gradually changes, becoming more and more conformed to that of the Master. Walking in the footsteps of Christ, the disciple becomes a wayfarer and – like the Samaritan – learns to see and to have compassion. He sees and has compassion on him. First of all, to see: their eyes are open to reality, not egoistically closed in on the circle of their own thoughts. Instead, the priest and the Levite see the unfortunate man, but they pass by as if they do not see him, they look the other way.

그러므로 “길의 제자” 즉 우리 크리스천들은 자신의 생각과 행동방식이 점차적으로 바뀌어 주님의 방식을 점점 더 닮아가는 것을 발견합니다. 그리스도의 발자취를 따라 걸으면서 제자는 나그네가 되어 사마리아인처럼 보고 가엾은 마음을 갖는 것을 배웁니다. 그는 보고 가엾은 마음이 들었습니다. 우선 봅니다. 그들의 눈은 현실에 열려 있고, 자신들의 생각의 범위에 이기적으로 갇혀 있지 않습니다. 대신에 사제와 레위인은 그 불행한 사람을 보지만 그를 보지 않은 것처럼 지나갑니다. 그들은 다른 곳을 봅니다.

The Gospel teaches us to see – it leads each of us to correctly understand reality, overcoming preconceptions and dogmatism each day. So many believers take refuge behind dogmatisms to defend themselves from reality. Then, it teaches us to follow Jesus, because following Jesus teaches us to have compassion – to see and to have compassion – to become aware of others, especially those who suffer, those who are in need, and to intervene like the Samaritan, not to pass by but to stop.

복음은 우리가 보도록 가르칩니다. - 우리 각자가 현실을 올바르게 이해하고 날마다 선입견과 독단주의를 극복하도록 이끕니다. 너무 많은 신자들이 현실로부터 자신을 방어하기 위해 독단주의 뒤에 숨습니다. 그리고 복음은 우리가 예수님을 따르도록 가르칩니다. 예수님을 따르는 것이 우리에게 가엾은 마음을 갖도록 가르치기 때문입니다. - 보고 가엾은 마음을 갖는 것입니다. - 다른 사람들을, 특별히 고통당하는 사람들, 도움이 필요한 사람들을 알아보고, 사마리아인처럼 관여하도록, 지나가지 않고 멈추도록 가르치기 때문입니다.

Faced with this Gospel parable, it can happen that we might blame others or blame ourselves, pointing fingers towards others, comparing them to the priest or the Levite – “That person, that person goes on, that one doesn’t stop…” – or even to blame ourselves, counting our own failures to pay attention to our neighbours. But I would like to suggest another type of exercise to you all, not one that finds fault, no. Certainly, we must recognize when we have been indifferent and have justified ourselves. But let us not stop there. We must acknowledge this, it is a mistake. But let us ask the Lord to help us overcome our selfish indifference and put ourselves on the Way.

이 복음의 비유를 접하고 우리는 다른 사람들 또는 우리자신을 비난할지 모릅니다. 다른 사람들에게 손가락질하며, 그들을 사제나 레위인과 비교하며 - “저 사람은, 저 사람은 그냥 가네, 저 사람은 멈추지 않네.......” 또는 우리의 이웃에게 주의를 기울이는데 실패한 우리의 잘못을 세면서 비난할지 모릅니다. 그러나 저는 잘못을 지적하는 대신 다른 형태의 실천을 여러분 모두에게 제안하고 싶습니다. 물론 우리는 우리가 무관심하였고 우리자신을 정당화했던 것을 인정해야 합니다. 그러나 거기에서 멈추지 맙시다. 우리는 이것을 인정해야 합니다. 그것은 잘못입니다. 그러나 주님께 우리가 우리의 이기적인 무관심을 극복하고 길에 설 수 있도록 도와주시도록 청합시다.

Let us ask him to see and to have compassion, this is a grace. We need to ask the Lord, “Lord, that I might see, that I might have compassions just like you see me and have compassion on me”. This is the prayer that I suggest to you today. “Lord, that I might see and have compassion just like you see me and have compassion on me” – that we might have compassion on those whom we encounter along the way, above all on those who suffer and are in need, to draw near to them and do what we can do to give them a hand.

주님에게 우리가 보고 가엾은 마음을 가지도록 청합시다. 이것은 은총입니다. 우리는 주님께 청해야 합니다. “주님, 주님이 저를 보시고 가엾은 마음을 가지신 것처럼 제가 보고 가엾은 마음을 가질 수 있게 해주소서.” 이것이 오늘 제가 여러분에게 제안하는 기도입니다. “주님, 주님이 저를 보시고 가엾은 마음을 가지신 것처럼 제가 보고 가엾은 마음을 가질 수 있게 해주소서.” - 길을 가며 만나는 사람들에게 가엾은 마음을 갖도록 해주소서! 무엇보다도 고통을 당하고 어려움을 겪는 사람들에게 다가가서 그들을 돕기 위해 우리가 할 수 있는 일을 할 수 있게 해 주소서! 

Many times, when I am with some Christian who comes to speak about spiritual things, I ask if they give alms. “Yes”, the person says to me. “So, tell me, do you touch the hand of the person you gave the money to?” “No, no, I throw it there.” “And do you look into the eyes of that person?” “No, it doesn’t cross my mind.” If you give alms without touching the reality, without looking into the eyes of the person in need, those alms are for you, not for that person. Think about this. Do I touch misery, even the misery that I am helping? Do I look into the eyes of the people who suffer, of the people that I help? I leave you with this thought – to see and to have compassion.

많은 경우에 영적인 일에 관해 얘기하기 위해서 온 크리스천에게 저는 그들이 자선을 베푸는지 묻습니다. “예” 하고 그 신자는 답합니다. “그러면 돈을 주면서 그 사람의 손을 잡아줍니까?” 하고 제가 묻습니다. “아니오. 그냥 돈을 던져줍니다.” “그러면 그 사람의 눈을 봅니까?” “아니오. 그런 생각을 못했습니다.” 당신이 현실에 손대지 않고 도움 받는 사람의 눈을 보지 않고 자선을 베푼다면 그 자선은 그 사람을 위한 것이 아니고 당신을 위한 것입니다. 이것을 생각해보십시오. 내가 비참함을 만집니까? 내가 돕는 비참함까지도 내가 만집니까? 고통을 당하는 사람의 눈을 봅니까? 내가 돕는 사람의 눈을 봅니까? 이 생각을 여러분께 남깁니다. - 보고 가엾은 마음을 갖으십시오.

May the Virgin Mary accompany us on this journey of growth. May she, who “shows us the Way”, that is Jesus, help us also to more and more become “disciples of the Way”.

동정 마리아여, 성장의 여정에 저희를 동반하소서! “우리에게 예수님이신 길을 보여주시는” 성모님, 저희를 도우셔서 저희가 점점 “길의 제자”가 되게 하소서!

After praying the Angelus, the Holy Father continued:

Dear brothers and sisters, I unite myself to the sorrow of the people of Sri Lanka who continue to suffer the effects of political and economic instability. Together with the Bishops of the country, I renew my appeal for peace and I implore those who have authority not to ignore the cry of the poor and the necessities of the people.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 저는 정치적, 경제적 불안정의 영향으로 계속 고통 받고 있는 스리랑카 국민의 슬픔에 공감합니다. 저는 그 나라의 주교들과 함께 평화에 대한 호소를 새롭게 하며, 당국자들에게 가난한 이들의 외침과 국민의 필요를 무시하지 않기를 청합니다.

I would like to address a special thought to the people of Libya, in particular to the young people and to all those who are suffering because of the serious social and economic problems in the country. I urge everyone to seek ever new convincing solutions with the help of the international community, through constructive dialogue and national reconciliation.

저는 리비아 국민, 특히 젊은이들과 심각한 사회경제적 문제로 고통 받는 모든 이들에게 특별한 생각을 전하고 싶습니다. 저는 모든 사람들에게 건설적인 대화와 민족적 화해를 통해 국제사회의 도움을 받아 새롭고 설득력 있는 해법을 찾기를 촉구합니다.

I renew my closeness to the Ukrainian people, who are daily tormented by the brutal attacks that the ordinary people are paying for. I pray for all the families, especially for the victims, the wounded, those who are sick. I pray for the elderly and for the children. May God show the way to put an end to this senseless war.

저는 평범한 사람들이 대가를 치르는 잔혹한 공격으로 매일 고통 받는 우크라이나 사람들과의 친밀감을 새롭게 합니다. 모든 가족, 특히 희생자, 부상자, 병자를 위해 기도합니다. 노인과 아이들을 위해 기도합니다. 하느님, 이 무의미한 전쟁을 끝낼 방법을 보여주소서!

Sea Sunday is being celebrated today. Let us remember all seafarers with esteem and gratitude for their precious work, as well as the chaplains and volunteers of “Stella Maris”. I entrust to Our Lady those seafarers who find themselves stranded in war zones so that they might return home.

오늘 바다주일이 거행되고 있습니다. "Stella Maris"의 군목과 자원 봉사자뿐만 아니라 선원들을 그들의 귀중한 일에 대한 존경과 감사의 마음으로 기억합시다. 저는 전쟁지역에 묶여있는 선원들을 우리의 성모님에게 의탁하여 그들이 집으로 돌아갈 수 있기를 청합니다.

I greet the group from São Tomás College from Lisbon, and the members of the faithful from Viseu, Portugal; the “Siempre Así” choir from Spain; the young people from the Archdiocese of Berlin and the Confirmation candidates from Bolgare (Bergamo). I extend my greeting to the Polish pilgrims as well as those who are participating in the annual pilgrimage of families from Radio Maria to the Shrine of Częstochowa. I greet the priests from various countries who are participating in the course for seminary formators organized by the Istituto Sacerdos of Rome.
