POPE FRANCIS ANGELUS, Saint Peter's Square, Third Sunday of Easter, 1 May 2022

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! The Gospel of today's Liturgy (Jn 21:1-19) recounts the third appearance of the Risen Jesus to the Apostles. It is a meeting that takes place by the Lake of Galilee, and above all involves Simon Peter. It all begins with him saying to the other disciples: “I am going fishing” (v. 3). There was nothing strange about this, since he was a fisherman, but he had abandoned this work from the time he had left his nets on the shore of that very lake in order to follow Jesus. And now, while the Risen One is waiting, Peter, perhaps a little disheartened, proposes to the others that he return to his former life. And the others accept: “We will go with you”. But “that night they caught nothing”. (v. 3).

친애하는 형제자매 여러분 행복한 주일입니다! 오늘의 전례 복음(요한 21,1-19)은 부활하신 예수님이 사도들에게 세 번째로 타나심을 전합니다. 그것은 갈릴래아 호숫가에서의 만남이며 무엇보다 시몬 베드로를 포함하고 있습니다. 모든 것은 시몬 베드로가 다른 제자들에게 “나는 고기 잡으러 가네.”라고 말하는 것으로 시작됩니다. 그는 어부였기 때문에 이상할 것이 없었지만, 그가 예수님을 따르기 위해 바로 그 호숫가에 그물을 버렸던 때부터 이 일을 떠났었습니다. 그리고 이제 부활하신 분이 기다리시는 동안에 베드로는 조금 낙담하였는지 다른 사람들에게 그가 그의 이전의 삶으로 돌아간다고 제안합니다. 그리고 다른 사람들은 “우리도 함께 가겠소.” 라고 받아들이지만 “그날 밤에는 아무것도 잡지 못하였습니다.” (3절)

This can happen to us, out of tiredness, disappointment, perhaps out of laziness, to forget the Lord and to neglect the great choices we have made, to content ourselves with something else. For example, not to dedicate time to talking together in the family, preferring personal pastimes; we forget prayer, letting ourselves get wrapped up in our own needs; we neglect charity, with the excuse of daily urgencies. But, in doing so, we find ourselves disappointed: it is that very disappointment that Peter felt, with empty nets, like him. It is a road that takes you backwards, and does not satisfy you.

주님을 잊고 우리가 택한 위대한 선택을 등한시하고 다른 것으로 우리를 만족시키는 이것이 피곤함, 실망, 아마도 게으름 때문에 우리에게 일어날 수 있습니다. 예를 들어서, 개인적인 오락을 선호하여 가족과 함께 이야기하는데 시간을 할애하지 않습니다. 우리자신을 우리 자신의 필요에 얽매이도록 하여 기도하는 것을 잊습니다. 일상의 긴급함을 핑계로 자선을 소홀히 합니다. 그러나 그렇게 함으로써 우리는 실망하게 됩니다. 베드로가 그와 같이 빈 그물을 보며 바로 그런 실망을 느꼈습니다. 그것은 우리를 후퇴하게 하는 길이며 우리를 만족시키지 못합니다. 

And what does Jesus do with Peter? He returns again to the shore of the lake where he had chosen him, Andrew, James and John. He does not reproach them – Jesus does not reproach, he touches the heart, always – but calls the disciples tenderly: “Children” (v. 5). Then he invites them, as before, to cast their nets again courageously. And this time the nets are filled to overflowing. Brothers and sisters, when our nets are empty in life, it is not the time to feel sorry for ourselves, to have fun, to return to old pastimes. It is time to begin again with Jesus, it is time to find the courage to begin again, it is time to put out to sea again with him. Always, faced with a disappointment, or a life that has lost its meaning somewhat – “today I feel as if I have gone backwards” – set out again with Jesus, start again, put out into the deep! He is waiting for you. And he is thinking only of you, me, each one of us.

Peter needed that “shock”. When he hears John cry: “It is the Lord!” (v. 7), he immediately dives into the water and swims towards Jesus. It is a gesture of love, because love goes beyond usefulness, convenience or duty; love generates wonder, it inspires creative, freely-given zeal. In this way, while John, the youngest, recognizes the Lord, it is Peter, the eldest, who dives towards him. In that dive there is all the new-found enthusiasm of Simon Peter.

Dear brothers and sisters, today the Risen Christ invites us to a new impetus – everyone, each one of us – he invites us to dive into the good without the fear of losing something, without calculating too much, without waiting for others to begin. Why? Do not wait for others, because in order to go out to meet Jesus, we need to be put off balance. We need to be put off balance with courage, restore ourselves, but restore ourselves unbalanced, taking risks. Let us ask ourselves: am I capable of an outburst of generosity, or do I restrain the impulses of my heart and close myself off in routine, in fear? Jump in, dive in. This is today’s word from Jesus.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 오늘 부활하신 그리스도께서는 우리를 - 모든 사람, 우리 각자를 - 새로운 자극으로 초대하십니다. 그분은 우리를 무엇인가 잃어버릴까 하는 두려움 없이, 너무 계산하지 않고, 다른 사람이 먼저 시작하기를 기다리지 않고, 좋은 일에 뛰어들도록 초대하십니다. 왜 그러실까요? 다른 사람들이 하기를 기다리지 마십시오. 나아가서 예수님을 만나려면 우리는 균형을 깨야 합니다. 우리는 용기를 가지고 균형을 깨고 우리 자신을 회복해야 합니다. 그러나 위험을 무릎 쓰고 균형이 잡히지 않은 우리자신으로 회복해야 합니다. 우리 자신에게 자문합시다. 나는 관대함의 폭발이 가능한가 아니면 나의 가슴의 충동을 억제하고 두려움 때문에 일상 안으로 자신을 걸어 잠그는가? 뛰어들어라, 물에 뛰어들어라. 이것이 예수님의 오늘의 말씀입니다.

Then, at the end of this episode, Jesus asks Peter, three times, the question: “Do you love me?” (vv. 15-16). The Risen Lord asks us too today: Do you love me? Because at Easter, Jesus wants our hearts to rise too; because faith is not a question of knowledge, but of love. Do you love me? Jesus asks you, me, us, who have empty nets and are afraid to start out again; who do not have the courage to dive in and have perhaps lost our momentum. Do you love me? Jesus asks. From then on, Peter stopped fishing forever and dedicated himself to the service of God and to his brothers and sisters to the point of giving his life here, where we are now. And what about us, do we want to love Jesus?

그런 다음, 이 이야기의 끝에 예수님이 베드로에게 3번 질문하십니다. “요한의 아들 시몬아, 너는 나를 사랑하느냐?” (15-16절) 부활하신 주님은 오늘 우리에게도 물으십니다. 너는 나를 사랑하느냐? 예수님은 부활절에 우리의 가슴도 일어나기를 원하시기 때문입니다. 믿음은 지식의 문제가 아니라 사랑의 문제이기 때문입니다. 너는 나를 사랑하느냐? 예수님은 빈 그물을 가지고 다시 시작하기를 두려워하는, 뛰어들 용기가 없고, 아마도 우리의 추진력을 잃은 여러분, 저, 우리들에게 물으십니다. 너는 나를 사랑하느냐? 예수님이 물으십니다. 그 이후 베드로는 고기 잡는 일을 영원히 그만두고 지금 우리가 있는 이곳에서 생명을 바치기까지 하느님과 형제자매들을 섬기는 일에 헌신하였습니다. 우리는 어떻습니까? 우리는 예수님을 사랑하기를 원합니까?

May Our Lady, who readily said “yes” to the Lord, help us to rediscover the impulse to do good.

주님께 기꺼이 “예”라고 말씀하신 성모님, 저희를 도우셔서 저희가 선을 행하는 충동을 재발견하게 하소서!

Dear brothers and sisters! Yesterday, Don Mario Ciceri and Armida Barelli were beatified in Milan. The first was a country deputy parish priest; he devoted himself to prayer and confession, visited the sick and stayed beside the boys at the oratory, as a gentle educator and safe guide. A shining example of a pastor. Armida Barelli was the founder and animator of the Female Youth of Catholic Action. She travelled all over Italy to inspire girls and young women to ecclesial and civil commitment. She collaborated with Father Gemelli to set up a secular women's institute and the Sacred Heart Catholic University, which is celebrating its annual day today and has named it “With a woman's heart” in her honour. A round of applause for the new Blessed!

Today is the beginning of the month dedicated to the Mother of God. I would like to invite all the faithful and communities to pray the Rosary for peace every day in May. My thought goes to the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, “Mary’s city”, barbarically bombed and destroyed. Once again, from here, I renew my request that safe humanitarian corridors be arranged for the people trapped in the steelworks in that city. I suffer and weep, thinking of the sufferings of the Ukrainian people, and in particular, the weakest, the elderly and children. There are even terrible reports of children being expelled and deported.

오늘은 하느님의 어머니께 봉헌된 달의 시작입니다. 저는 모든 신자와 공동체가 5월에 매일 평화를 위해 묵주기도를 바치도록 초대하고 싶습니다. 저의 생각이 야만적 인 폭격으로 파괴 된 "마리아의 도시“인 우크라이나 마리우폴 (Mariupol)에 머뭅니다. 다시 한 번, 저는 이곳에서, 그 도시의 제철소에 갇힌 사람들을 위해 안전한 인도주의적 통로를 마련해 줄 것을 새롭게 요청합니다. 우크라이나인, 특히 가장 약한 이들, 노인들, 어린이들의 고통을 생각하며 저는 괴로워하고 웁니다. 아이들이 퇴출되고 추방당한다는 끔찍한 보도도 있습니다.

I beg you, let us not surrender to the logic of violence, to the perverse spiral of weapons. May the path of dialogue and peace be taken! Let us pray.

그리고 우리가 인류의 무시무시한 퇴행을 목격하고 있는 동안, 저는 많은 고뇌에 찬 사람들과 함께 진정으로 평화가 추구되고 있는지 즉, 지속적인 군사적, 언어적 확전을 피하려는 의지가 있는지, 그리고 무기를 침묵시키기 위해 모든 가능한 조치를 취하고 있는지 궁금합니다. 저는 여러분에게 간청합니다. 폭력의 논리와 비뚤어진 무기의 소용돌이에 굴복하지 맙시다. 대화와 평화의 길을 택하기를! 모두 기도합시다.

And today is Labour Day. May it be a stimulus to the renew of efforts to ensure that work is dignified everywhere and for everyone. And may the world of work inspire the will to develop an economy of peace. And I would like to remember workers who died at work: it is a widespread tragedy, perhaps too much so.

그리고 오늘은 노동절입니다. 노동이 모든 곳에서 그리고 모든 사람에게 품위 있게 되는 것을 보장하는 노력을 새롭게 하는 자극제가 되기를 빕니다. 그리고 노동의 세계가 평화의 경제를 발전시키려는 의지를 고취시키길 바랍니다. 그리고 저는 작업장에서 사망한 노동자들을 기억하고 싶습니다. 그것은 만연한 비극입니다. 아마도 너무 많이 일어납니다.

The day after tomorrow, 3 May, is UNESCO World Press Freedom Day. I pay homage to journalists who pay with their lives to serve this right. Last year, 47 journalists were killed worldwide, and more than 350 were imprisoned. Special thanks go to those who courageously inform us of the wounds of humanity.

모레 5월 3일은 유네스코 세계 언론자유의 날입니다. 저는 이 권리를 위해 목숨을 바친 기자들에게 경의를 표합니다. 작년에 전 세계적으로 47명의 언론인이 살해되었고 350명 이상이 투옥되었습니다. 용기 있게 인류의 상처를 알려주신 분들께 특별히 감사드립니다.

I greet you all, Romans and pilgrims from Italy and many countries. In particular, I greet the faithful from Spain, Portugal and the United States of America, as well as the Maronite parish of Nazareth and that of Saint Rita in Warsaw. I greet the “Jubilee” Choir of Conselve and the students of Mascalucia. A special thought goes to the “Meter” Association, which has for many years combatted violence and abuse of minors, always taking the side of the little ones. And I also greet the young people of the Immacolata.
