Holy Father's Address Before the Angelus [Saint Peter's Square] Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time (6 February 2022)

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno! The Gospel of today’s Liturgy takes us to the banks of the Sea of Galilee. The crowd is gathering around Jesus, while some disappointed fishermen, including Simon Peter, are washing their nets after a night of fishing that went badly. And so it is that Jesus climbs into Simon's boat; then he invites him to go out to sea and cast his nets again (cf. Lk 5:1-4). Let us pause on these two actions of Jesus: first he climbs into the boat and then, the second, he invites him to put out into the open water. It was a night that went badly, without fish, but Peter is trustful and sets out into open water.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 오늘 전례의 복음은 우리를 갈릴리 바닷가로 이끕니다. 군중은 예수님 주위에 모여 들고, 시몬 베드로를 비롯한 실망한 어부들은 밤에 고기를 잡지 못한 후 그물을 씻고 있습니다. 그래서 예수님은 시몬의 배에 오르십니다. 그런 다음 예수님은 시몬에게 바다에 나가 그물을 다시 던지라고 초대하십니다. (루카 5,1-4 참조) 예수님의 이 두 가지 행동에 대해 잠시 멈춰 봅시다. 첫째, 예수님은 배에 오르신 다음, 둘째, 시몬에게 넓은 바다에 그물은 던지라고 초대하십니다. 지난밤은 고기를 못 잡고 허탕 친 밤이었습니다. 그러나 베드로는 믿음을 가지고 넓은 바다로 나갑니다.

First of all, Jesus gets into Simon’s boat. To do what? To teach. He asks for that very boat, which is not full of fish but rather has returned to the shore empty, after a night of toil and disillusionment. It is a beautiful image for us too. Every day the boat of our life leaves the shores of our home to sail out into the sea of daily activities; every day we try to “fish from the sea”, to cultivate dreams, to pursue projects, to experience love in our relationships. But often, like Peter, we experience the “night of empty nets” – the night of empty nets – the disappointment of trying so hard and not seeing the desired results: “We toiled all night and took nothing” (v. 5), says Simon. How often we too are left with a sense of defeat, while disappointment and bitterness arise in our hearts. Two very dangerous woodworms.

우선 예수님은 시몬의 배에 오르십니다. 무엇을 하시려고? 가르치기 위해서입니다. 예수님은 바로 그 배를 원하십니다. 그 배는 고기로 가득 차 있지 않고 오히려 수고와 환멸의 밤을 보낸 후에 빈 채로 바닷가로 돌아왔습니다. 그것은 우리에게도 아름다운 이미지입니다. 매일 우리 인생의 배는 일상의 바다로 항해하기 위해 우리 집 앞 바닷가를 떠납니다. 매일 우리는 "바다에서 고기를 잡으려고," 꿈을 가꾸고, 프로젝트를 추진하고, 우리의 관계에서 사랑을 체험하기 위해서 노력합니다. 그러나 종종 우리는 베드로처럼 “빈 그물의 밤”을 경험합니다.  – 빈 그물의 밤 – 열심히 노력했지만 원하는 결과를 얻지 못하는 실망입니다. “저희가 밤새도록 애썼지만 한 마리도 잡지 못하였습니다.” (5절) 시몬이 말합니다. 우리도 얼마나 자주 패배감에 사로잡히고 마음에 실망과 쓰라림이 생기는지 모릅니다. 이는 매우 위험한 두 마리의 벌레입니다.

What does the Lord do then? He chooses to climb into our boat. From there he wants to proclaim the Gospel. It is precisely that empty boat, the symbol of our incapacity, that becomes Jesus’ “cathedra”, the pulpit from which he proclaims the Word. And this is what the Lord loves to do – the Lord is the Lord of surprises, of miracles in surprises: to climb into the boat of our lives when we have nothing to offer him; to enter our voids and fill them with his presence; to make use of our poverty to proclaim his wealth, our miseries to proclaim his mercy. Let us remember this: God does not want a cruise ship: a poor “ramshackle” boat is enough for him, as long as we welcome him.

그러면 주님은 무엇을 하십니까? 그분은 우리의 배에 오르기로 결정하십니다. 거기에서 복음을 선포하기를 원하십니다. 우리의 무능함을 상징하는 빈 배는 바로 예수님께서 말씀을 선포하시는 강단인 예수님의 “대성당”이 됩니다. 그리고 이것이 주님께서 하기 좋아하시는 일입니다. 주님은 놀라움의 주님이시며 놀라운 기적의 주님이십니다. 주님이 우리가 아무것도 드릴 수 없을 때 우리 삶의 배에 오르셔서, 우리의 공허함으로 오셔서 그분의 현존으로 채우시고, 우리의 가난으로 그분의 풍요를 선포하시고, 우리의 불행으로 그분의 자비를 선포하십니다. 이것을 기억합시다. 하느님은 유람선을 원하지 않으십니다. 우리가 그분을 환영하는 한, 그분께는 누추한 “망가질 듯한” 배로 충분합니다.

This yes, to welcome him; the boat doesn’t matter, but that we welcome him. But, I wonder, do we let him into the boat of our lives? Do we make available to him the little we have? Sometimes we feel unworthy of Him because we are sinners. But this is an excuse that the Lord does not like, because it distances Him from us! He is the God of closeness, compassion, tenderness, and he does not seek perfectionism: he seeks our welcome. He says to you too: “Let me get into the boat of your life”, “But Lord, look..” – “Like that, let me in, just as it is”. Think about this.

예, 그분을 환영하는 것입니다. 배는 중요하지 않지만 우리가 그분을 환영하는 것이 중요합니다. 그러나 우리의 삶의 배에 그분이 들어오시도록 할지 모르겠습니다. 우리가 가진 작을 것을 그분께 내어놓을 수 있습니까? 가끔 우리가 죄인이기 때문에 그분께 합당하지 않다고 느낍니다. 그러나 이것은 주님께서 좋아하지 않으시는 변명입니다. 우리로부터 그분을 멀어지게 하기 때문입니다. 그분은 친밀함, 연민, 부드러움의 하느님이시며 완벽주의를 추구하지 않으십니다. 그분은 우리의 환영을 원하십니다. 그분은 또한 당신에게 이렇게 말씀하십니다.  “너의 삶의 배 안으로 들어가게 해다오.” “그러나 주님, 보십시오...” - “그것을 나는 있는 그대로 좋아한다. 나를 들여보내 다오!” 이것에 대해 생각해보십시오.

In this way, the Lord reconstructs Peter’s trust. When he climbs into the boat, after preaching, he says: “Put out a little from the land” (v. 4). It was not a good time of the day for fishing, in broad daylight, but Peter trusts in Jesus. He does not base his trust on the strategies of fishermen, which he knows well, but rather he founds it on the newness of Jesus. That wonder that moved him to do what Jesus told him. It is the same for us too: if we welcome the Lord into our boat, we can put out to sea. With Jesus, we navigate the sea of life without fear, without giving in to disappointment when we catch nothing, and without giving up and saying “there is nothing more to be done”. Always, in personal life as well as in the life of the Church and society, there is something beautiful and courageous that can be done, always. We can always start again – the Lord always invites us to get back on our feet because He opens up new possibilities. So let us accept the invitation: let us chase away pessimism and mistrust, and put out to sea with Jesus! Our little empty boat, too, will witness a miraculous catch. Let us pray to Mary: who like no other welcomed the Lord into the boat of her life. May she encourage us and intercede for us.

이런 식으로 주님은 베드로의 신뢰를 회복시키십니다. 예수님은 배에 오르셔서 설교를 마치신 다음, 다음과 같이 말씀하십니다. “깊은 데로 저어 나가서 그물을 내려 고기를 잡아라.” (4절) 대낮인 그때가 하루 중 고기를 잡기에 좋은 시간이 아니었지만 베드로는 예수님을 믿습니다. 그의 믿음을 그가 잘 아는 어부의 전략에 두지 않고 오히려 예수님의 새로움에 둡니다. 그 경이로움은 그로 하여금 예수께서 말씀하신 대로 하도록 감동시켰습니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 주님을 우리의 배에 모시면 바다로 나갈 수 있습니다. 예수님과 함께 우리는 두려움 없이, 아무것도 잡지 못해도 실망하지 않고, “더 이상 할 일이 없다”고 말하며 포기하지 않고 삶의 바다를 항해합니다. 항상 개인의 삶과 교회와 사회의 삶에는 할 수 있는 아름답고 용기 있는 무엇이 있습니다. 우리는 항상 다시 시작할 수 있습니다. 주님께서 항상 우리를 초대하셔서 우리가 우리 힘으로 다시 설 수 있게 하십니다. 그분은 새로운 가능성을 여시기 때문입니다. 그러므로 그분의 초대를 받아들입시다. 비관과 불신을 몰아냅시다. 그리고 예수님과 함께 깊은 대로 저어나갑시다. 우리의 작은 빈 배도 기적적인 어획을 증거할 것입니다. 누구와도 비교할 수 없을 정도로 자신의 삶의 배에 주님을 초대한 마리아께 기도드립시다. 성모님, 저희에게 용기를 주시고 저희를 위해 중재해주소서!

Dear brothers and sisters, Today is the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. Approximately three million girls undergo this operation every year, often in conditions that are very dangerous to their health. This practice, unfortunately widespread in various regions of the world, demeans the dignity of women and gravely undermines their physical integrity.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 오늘은 세계 여성 할례 금지의 날입니다. 매년 약 3백만 명의 소녀들이 종종 그들의 건강에 매우 위험한 상황에서 이 수술을 받습니다. 불행히도 세계 여러 지역에 널리 퍼져 있는 이러한 관행은 여성의 존엄성을 떨어뜨리고 여성의 신체적 통합을 약화시킵니다.

And next Tuesday, liturgical memorial of Saint Josephine Bakhita, we will celebrate the World Day of Prayer and Reflection against Human Trafficking. This is a deep wound, inflicted by the shameful pursuit of economic interests without any respect for the human person. So many girls – we see them on the streets – who are not free, are slaves of traffickers, who send them to work and, if they do not bring the money, beat them. This is happening in our cities today. Let us really think about it. Faced with these scourges of humanity, I express my sorrow and I urge all those with responsibility to act decisively to prevent both exploitation and the humiliating practices that afflict women and girls in particular.

그리고 다음 화요일, 성 조세핀 바키타의 전례 기념식, 에 우리는 세계 인신매매 반대 기도와 성찰의 날을 지낼 것입니다. 이것은 인간을 존중하지 않고 경제적 이익만 추구하는 부끄러운 행동이 낳은 깊은 상처입니다. 거리에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 수많은 소녀들이 자유롭지 못하고  인신매매자들의 노예입니다. 그들은 그 소녀들을 일터로 내몰고 그들이 돈을 가져오지 못하면 구타합니다. 이것이 우리의 도시에서 일어나고 있습니다. 이것에 대해서 정말 생각해봅시다. 이러한 인류의 재앙에 직면하여 저는 슬픔을 표하고 책임이 있는 모든 사람들이 여성과 특히 소녀들을 괴롭히는 착취와 굴욕적인 관행을 방지하기 위해 단호하게 행동할 것을 촉구합니다.

Today, in Italy, it is also the Day for Life, on the theme “Protect every life”. This appeal is valid for everyone, especially for the most vulnerable categories: the elderly, the sick, and even children who are prevented from being born. I join the Italian bishops in promoting the culture of life as a response to the logic of rejection and to the demographic decline. Every life must be preserved, always!

오늘 이탈리아에서는 "모든 생명을 보호하자" 라는 주제를 건 생명의 날이기도 합니다. 이 호소는 모든 사람, 특히 가장 취약한 범주인 노약자, 병자, 심지어는 출생이 금지된 어린이에게 유효합니다. 저는 거부의 논리와 인구 감소에 대한 대응으로 생명 문화를 장려하는 이탈리아 주교들과 함께합니다. 모든 생명은 항상 보존되어야 합니다!

We are used to seeing and reading in the media so many bad things, bad news, accidents, murders... so many things. But today I would like to mention two beautiful things. One, in Morocco, how all the people gathered together to save Rayan. It was all the people there, working to save a child! They put everything they had into it. Unfortunately, he did not make it. But that example - I was reading in Il Messaggero today - those photographs of the people there, waiting to save a child.... Thank you to these people for this testimony!

우리는 미디어에서 너무 많은 나쁜 것, 나쁜 소식, 사고, 살인... 너무 많은 것을 보고 읽는 데 익숙합니다. 그러나 오늘 저는 두 가지 아름다운 사실을 말씀드리겠습니다. 하나는 모로코에서 모든 사람들이 Rayan을 구하기 위해 모였습니다. 그곳의 모든 사람들은 한 아이를 구하기 위해 노력했습니다! 그들은 가진 모든 것을 쏟아 부었습니다. 불행히도 그 아이는 해 내지 못했습니다. 그러나 그 모범은 - 저는 오늘 Il Messaggero에서 읽었습니다. - 한 아이를 구하기 위해 기다리고 있는 그 사람들의 그 사진들...... 이 증거에 대해 그분들께 감사합니다.

And another one, which happened here in Italy, and will not appear in the newspaper. In Monferrato: John, a Ghanaian boy, 25 years old, a migrant, who suffered everything that many migrants suffer to get here, and in the end he settled in Monferrato, he started to work, to make his future, in a wine company. And then he fell ill with a terrible cancer; he is dying. And when they told him the truth, what he would have liked to do, [he replied:] “To go back home to embrace my father before dying”. As he was dying, he thought of his father. And in that village in Monferrato, they immediately took up the collection and, medicated with morphine, they put him and a companion on a plane and sent him home so that he could die in his father’s arms. This shows us that today, in the midst of so much bad news, there are good things, there are “saints next door”. Thank you for these two testimonies which are good for us.
