Holy Father's Address Before the Angelus [Saint Peter's Square] Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time (17 October 2021)

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno! The Gospel of today’s Liturgy (Mk 10:35-45) narrates that two disciples, James and John, ask the Lord to one day sit beside him in glory, as if they were “prime ministers”, or something like that. But the other disciples hear it and become indignant. At that point, Jesus patiently offers them a great teaching. It is this: true glory is not obtained by rising over others, but by experiencing the same baptism that He, Jesus, would receive just a little later in Jerusalem, that is, the cross. What does this mean? The word “baptism” means “immersion”: through his Passion, Jesus immersed himself into death, offering his life to save us. Therefore, his glory, the glory of God, is love that becomes service, not power that seeks to dominate.  Not power that seeks to dominate, no! But love that becomes service. Thus, Jesus ends saying to his disciples and to us as well: “Whoever would be great among you must be your servant” (v. 43). To become great, you should take the path of service, serving others.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 오늘의 전례의 복음은 (마르코 10,35-45)야고보와 요한, 두 제자가 주님께 언젠가 영광을 받으실 때 마치 그들이 “총리들”이나 그와 비슷한 고위직처럼 주님의 옆에 앉게 해달라고 청하는 것을 전합니다. 그러나 다른 제자들은 그 말을 듣고 불쾌해집니다. 그 때에 예수님께서 인내심을 가지고 그들에게 위대한 가르침을 주십니다. 그 가르침은 이렇습니다. 진정한 영광은 다른 사람들 위에 올라감으로써 얻어지지 않고, 예수님께서 조금 후에 예루살렘에서 받으실 그 세례 곧 십자가를 겪음으로써 얻어집니다. 이것은 무엇을 위미합니까? “세례”라는 단어는 “담금”을 뜻합니다. 그분의 수난을 통해 예수님께서 우리를 구원하기 위해 자신의 생명을 내놓으시고 자신을 죽음에 담그셨습니다. 그래서 그분의 영광, 하느님의 영광은 다스리려는 권력이 아니라 섬기는 사랑입니다. 지배하려는 권력이 아닙니다. 권력이 아니고 봉사가 되는 사랑입니다. 그래서 예수님께서 제자들에게 그리고 우리에게도 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “너희 가운데에서 높은 사람이 되려는 이는 너희를 섬기는 사람이 되어야 한다.” (43절) 위대해지려면 다른 사람을 섬기는 봉사의 길을 가야 합니다.

We are in front of two different types of logic: the disciples want to rise up and Jesus wants to immerse Himself. Let us spend a few moments on these two verbs. The first is to rise up. It expresses that worldly mentality to which we are always tempted: to experience everything, including relationships, in order to feed our ambition, to climb the ladder of success, to reach important positions. The quest for personal prestige can become a spiritual malady, masquerading itself even behind good intentions: for example, when behind the good we do and preach, we actually seek ourselves alone and our own affirmation, that is, that we get ahead and climb up, we see it even in the Church... How many times, we Christians – who should be servants – try to climb up, to get ahead.

우리는 두 가지 다른 유형의 논리 앞에 있습니다. 제자들은 올라가기를 원하고 예수님께서는 자신을 담그기를 원하십니다. 이 두 동사들에 대해 잠시 생각해봅시다. 첫째는 올라가는 것입니다. 그것은 우리가 항상 유혹을 느끼는 세상적인 사고방식을 표현합니다. 우리의 욕망을 채우기 위해서, 관계를 포함해서 모든 것을 경험하고, 성공의 사다리를 오르고, 중요한 위치에 도달하는 것입니다. 개인 명성의 추구는 영적인 병이 될 수 있습니다. 선한 의도의 뒤에 그것을 숨기고, 예를 들어서 우리가 행하고 설교하는 선함 뒤에서 우리는 실제로는 우리 자신만을 추구하고 우리 자신의 확증을 추구합니다. 그것은 우리가 앞서 가고 올라가는 것입니다. 우리는 그것을 교회에서도 봅니다. 얼마나 자주 종이 되어야 하는 우리 크리스천들이 올라가려고 하고 앞서가려고 합니까?

We therefore always need to evaluate our heart’s real intentions, to ask ourselves: “Why am I carrying out this work, this responsibility? To offer service or rather to be recognised, praised and to receive compliments?” Jesus contrasts this worldly logic with his own: instead of exalting yourself over others, get off your pedestal to serve them; instead of rising above others, to be immersed in others’ lives. I was watching on the program A Sua Immagine that service carried out by Caritas so that no one might lack food: being concerned about others’ hunger, being concerned about others’ needs. There are so, so many in need, and after the pandemic there are many more. Seek to be immersed in service rather than to climb up for one’s own glory.

그러므로 우리는 항상 우리마음의 진정한 의도를 평가하여 다음과 같이 자문해야 합니다. “내가 왜 이 일, 이 책임을 수행하고 있나? 봉사하는 것인가, 아니면 인정받고, 찬사를 받고, 칭찬 받기 위해서인가?” 예수님께서는 이 세상적인 논리를 자신의 논리로 대비시키십니다. 자신을 남보다 높이는 대신 그들에게 봉사하기 위해서 자신의 위치에서 내려오십시오. 남들 위로 오르기보다 다른 사람들의 삶에 몰입하는 것입니다. 저는 A Sua Immagine 라는 프로그램을 시청했는데 아무도 음식이 부족하지 않도록 카리타스가 수행하는 봉사였습니다. 다른 사람들의 배고픔을 염려하고, 다른 사람들의 필요를 염려하는 것입니다. 필요로 하는 사람들이 너무 많습니다. 전염병 대유행 후에 더 많이 있습니다. 우리 자신의 영광을 위해서 올라가기보다는 봉사에 몰두하기를 추구하십시오.

Here is the second verb: to be immersed. Jesus asks us to immerse ourselves. And how should we immerse ourselves? Compassionately in the lives of those we meet. We were considering hunger: but do we think compassionately about the hunger of so many people? When we have a meal before us, which is a grace from God that we can eat, there are people who do not have enough food for the entire month. Let’s think about that. And immerse ourselves compassionately, to have compassion, is not a statistic in an encyclopedia… No! They are people. Do I have compassion on people? Compassion for the lives of those we meet, like Jesus has done with me, with you, with all of us, he drew near with compassion.

이제 두 번째 동사, 몰입하다, 가 있습니다. 예수님께서는 우리에게 우리 자신을 담그기를 청하십니다. 어떻게 우리자신을 담글까요? 우리가 만나는 사람들의 삶으로 측은한 마음을 가지고 몰입합니다. 우리는 굶주림에 대해 생각합니다. 그러나 우리가 수많은 사람들의 굶주림을 가엾은 마음으로 생각합니다. 하느님으로부터의 은총인 우리가 먹을 수 있는 음식이 우리 앞에 있을 때 한 달 내내 먹을 음식이 충분치 않은 사람들이 있습니다. 그것을 생각해봅시다. 그리고 가엾은 마음으로 우리 자신을 담그십시오. 가엾은 마음을 갖는 것, 왜냐하면 백과사전의 통계가 아닙니다. 아닙니다. 그들은 사람입니다. 나는 사람들에 대해 가엾은 마음을 가지고 있습니까? 우리가 만나는 사람들의 삶에 대한 가엾은 마음, 예수님께서 우리에게, 여러분에게, 우리 모두에게 가지셨던 가엾은 마음. 예수님께서 가엾은 마음을 가지고 가까이 오셨습니다.

Let us look at the Crucified Lord, completely immersed in our wounded history, and we will discover God’s way of doing things. We see that he did not remain up above in heaven to look down on us from up there, but he lowered himself to wash our feet. God is love and love is humble, it does not exalt itself, but comes down like the rain that falls to the earth and brings life. But how can we adopt the same direction as Jesus, going from raising ourselves up to immersing ourselves, from the mentality of prestige, worldly prestige, to that of service, Christian service? Dedication is needed, but that is not enough.

우리의 상처받은 역사 속에 온전히 잠기신 십자가에 못 박히신 주님을 바라봅시다. 그러면 우리는 하느님의 일하시는 방식을 발견할 것입니다. 우리는 그분이 우리를 굽어보시기 위해 높은 데에 머무르지 않으시고 우리의 발을 씻기 위해 자신을 낮추신 것을 압니다. 하느님은 사랑이며 사랑은 겸손하고, 자신을 높이지 않고 땅에 떨어져 생명을 주는 비와 같이 내려옵니다. 그러나 우리가 어떻게 예수님의 방식을 받아들일 수 있습니까? 우리 자신을 높이는 것으로부터 우리 자신을 담그는 것으로, 명성, 세속적인 명성의 사고방식으로부터 봉사의 사고방식으로, 크리스천 봉사의 사고방식으로 방향을 바꿀 수 있습니까? 헌신이 필요합니다만 그것으로 충분하지 않습니다.

It is difficult alone, but not impossible, for we have a strength within that helps us. It is the strength of Baptism, of that immersion in Jesus that all of us have already received through grace that directs us, moving us to follow him instead of seeking our interests, but to put ourselves at the service of others. It is a grace, a fire that the Spirit has kindled in us that needs to be nurtured. Today, let us ask the Holy Spirit to renew the grace of Baptism in us, that immersion in Jesus, in his way of being, to be more like servants, to be servants like he has been with us.

혼자서는 어렵지만 불가능한 것은 아닙니다. 우리 안에 도움이 되는 힘이 있기 때문입니다. 그것은 우리 모두가 은총을 통해 이미 받은 세례의 힘, 예수님 안에 그 잠기는 힘이며 그 힘은 우리를 인도하고 감동시켜 그분을 따르도록 하여 우리의 이익을 추구하기보다는 타인을 위해 봉사하도록 합니다. 그것은 은총으로서 성령께서 우리 안에 붙이신 불이며, 키워져야 합니다. 오늘 성령께 우리 안의 세례의 은총을 새롭게 해주십사고 청합시다. 예수님 안의 그 잠김, 그분의 존재방식, 좀 더 종과 같이 되는 것, 그분이 우리에게 하셨던 것과 같이 종이 되도록 청합시다.

And let us pray to the Madonna: she –  even though she was the greatest – did not seek to rise up, but was the humble servant of the Lord, and is completely immersed in our service to help us encounter Jesus.

그리고 성모님께 기도합시다. 그분은 가장 위대하였지만 오르는 것을 구하지 않았고, 주님의 겸손한 종이었고 우리가 예수님을 만나는 것을 돕기 위해 우리에 대한 봉사에 온전히 몰두하고 있습니다.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 오늘 “Aid to the Church in Need, 고통 받는 교회 돕기” 재단이 본당, 학교, 그리고 가정의 “일치와 평화, 백만 어린이 묵주기도 바치기” 일정을 정했습니다. 저는 이 기도 캠페인을 격려합니다. 금년에 이 캠페인은 특별한 방식으로 성 요셉의 전구에 맡겨졌습니다. 이 캠페인에 참여하는 모든 어린이들에게 감사를 표합니다. 대단히 감사합니다.

Yesterday, in Cordoba, Spain, the priest, Juan Elías Medina and 126 companion martyrs – priests, religious, seminarians and lay people – were killed in hatred of the faith during the violent religious persecution of the 1930s in Spain. May their fidelity grant us all strength, especially persecuted Christians in various parts of the world, the strength to witness to the Gospel courageously. A round of applause for the new Blesseds!

어제 스페인 코르도바에서 사제 후안 엘리아스 메디나와 126명의 순교자들 (사제, 수도자, 신학생, 평신도) 이 1930년대 스페인에서 일어난 폭력적인 종교 박해 기간 동안 신앙에 대한 증오로 살해되었습니다. 그들의 충실함이 우리 모두에게 힘을, 특히 세계 여러 지역에서 박해받는 그리스도인들에게 복음을 증거할 수 있는 힘을 주시기를 빕니다. 새로운 복자들에게 환호의 박수를 보냅시다.
 
Last week, various attacks took place in Norway, Afghanistan, England, that caused numerous deaths and wounded many. I express my nearness to the families of the victims. I beg you to please abandon the path of violence that is always a losing cause and is a defeat for everyone. Let us recall that violence begets violence.

지난 주 노르웨이, 아프가니스탄, 영국에서 다양한 공격이 일어나 수많은 사망자와 부상자가 발생했습니다. 저의 마음이 희생자 가족들에게 가까이 있음을 표합니다. 항상 패배의 원인이며 모두의 패배인 폭력의 길을 제발 버리기를 간청합니다. 폭력은 폭력을 낳는다는 것을 기억합시다.

In particular, I greet the “Medee” Sisters who are holding their General Chapter, the Confederation of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux – Poor Knights of Christ, African businessmen gathered for their international meeting, members of the faithful from Este, Cavallino and Ca’ Vio (Venice), and the Confirmation class of Galzignano.
