Holy Father's Address Before the Angelus [Saint Peter's Square] Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time (3 October 2021)

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno! In the Gospel of today’s Liturgy we see Jesus react somewhat unusually: He is indignant. And what is most surprising is that his indignation is not caused by the pharisees who put him to the test with questions about the legality of divorce, but by his disciples who, to protect him from the crowd of people, rebuke some children who had been brought to Jesus. In other words, the Lord is not angry with those who argue with him, but with those who, in order to relieve him of his burden, make the children go away from him. Why? It is a good question: why does the Lord do this?

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 오늘 전례 복음에서 우리는 예수님이 다소 이례적으로 반응하시는 것을 봅니다. 분개하십니다. 그리고 가장 놀라운 사실은 그분의 분노가 이혼의 합법성을 문제 삼아 그분을 시험한 바리사이들에게 하신 것이 아니라, 군중으로부터 자신을 보호하기 위해서 예수님께 데려온 어린이들을 꾸짖은 제자들에게 하신 것이라는 사실입니다. 다시 말해서, 주님은 자신과 논쟁하는 자들에게 노하지 않으시고, 자신의 짐을 덜어주기 위해 어린이들을 보낸 사람들에게 노하십니다. 왜요? 좋은 질문입니다. 주님께서 왜 이렇게 하십니까?

Let us remember – it was the Gospel reading two Sundays ago – that Jesus, performing the gesture of embracing a child, identified himself with the little ones: he taught that it is indeed the little ones, namely, those are dependent on others, who are in need and cannot reciprocate, who must be served first (see Mk 9:35-37). Those who seek God find him there, in the little ones, in those in need: in need not only of material goods, but of care and comfort, such as the sick, the humiliated, prisoners, immigrants, the incarcerated. He is there: in the little ones. This is why Jesus gets angry: any affront to a little one, a poor person, a child, a defenceless person, is done to Him.

두 주일 전에 읽은 복음서에서 예수님은 어린아이를 안아주시면서 어린아이들과 자신을 동일시하신 것을 기억합시다. 예수님께서 제일 먼저 섬겨야 할 사람들은 진정 작은이들, 즉 타인에게 의존해야 하는 사람들, 가난하고 갚지 못하는 사람들이라고 가르치셨습니다. (마르코 9,35-37 참조) 하느님을 찾는 사람들은 거기에서 그분을 찾습니다. 즉, 작은이들 안에, 가난한 사람들 안에, 병자, 굴욕을 당한 사람들, 죄수들, 이주자들, 투옥된 사람들처럼 물질적인 재물뿐만 아니라 보살핌과 위로를 필요로 하는 사람들 안에서 그분을 찾습니다. 그분이 작은이들 안에 계십니다. 이것이 예수님께서 노하신 이유입니다. 작은이, 가난한 사람, 어린이, 자신을 방어할 수 없는 사람을 모욕하는 것은 그분께 하는 것입니다.
Today the Lord picks up this teaching again and completes it. In fact, he adds: “Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it” (Mk 10:15). Here is what is new: the disciple must not only serve the little ones, but also acknowledge himself as a little one. And every one of us, do we recognise ourselves as small before God? Let’s think about it, it will help us. Awareness of being little, awareness of the need of salvation is indispensable for receiving the Lord. It is the first step in opening ourselves up to Him. Often, however, we forget about this. In prosperity, in wellbeing, we have the illusion of being self-sufficient, that we are enough, that we do not need God. Brothers and sisters, this is a deception, because each one of us is a person in need, a little one. We must seek out our smallness and recognise it. And there, we will find Jesus.

오늘 주님은 이 가르침을 다시 말씀하시고 그 가르침을 완성하십니다. 실제로 이렇게 덧붙이십니다. “내가 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 어린이와 같이 하느님의 나라를 받아들이지 않는 자는 결코 그곳에 들어가지 못한다.” (마르코 10,15) 여기에 새로운 것이 있습니다. 제자는 작은이를 섬길 뿐만 아니라 자신을 작은이로 인정해야 합니다. 그리고 우리 각자, 우리 자신을 하느님 앞에서 작은이로 인정합니까? 그것에 대해 생각해 봅시다. 도움이 될 것입니다. 작다는 자각, 구원의 필요성에 대한 자각은 주님을 받아들이는데 필수적입니다. 그것은 그분께 우리 자신을 여는 첫 단계입니다. 그러나 종종 우리는 이것을 잊어버립니다. 번영과 웰빙 속에서 우리는 자급자족하고, 우리가 충분하여 하느님이 필요하지 않다는 환상을 갖습니다. 형제자매 여러분, 이것은 거짓입니다. 우리 각자는 도움을 필요로 하는 사람, 작은이이기 때문입니다. 우리는 우리의 작음을 찾고 그것을 인정해야 합니다. 그러면 거기에서 예수님을 발견할 것입니다.

In life, recognising one’s littleness is a starting point for becoming great. If we think about it, we grow not so much on the basis of our successes and the things we have, but above all in difficult and fragile moments. There, in our need, we mature; there we open our hearts to God, to others, to the meaning of life. Let us open our eyes to others. Let us open our eyes, when we are little, to the true meaning of life. When we feel small in the face of a problem, small in front of a cross, an illness, when we experience fatigue and loneliness, let us not get discouraged. The mask of superficiality is falling and our radical weakness is re-emerging: it is our common ground, our treasure, because with God weakness is not an obstacle but an opportunity. A beautiful prayer would be this: “Lord, look at my frailties…” and to list them before Him. This is a good attitude before God.

삶에서 자신의 작음을 인정하는 것이 위대해지기 위한 출발점입니다. 그것을 곰곰이 생각하면 우리는 자신의 성공과 우리가 소유하고 있는 것을 바탕으로 성장하기 보다는 무엇보다 힘들고 연약한 순간에 성장합니다. 그곳에서 우리는 필요 안에서 성숙하고, 거기에서 우리는 하느님께, 타인에게, 그리고 삶의 의미에 우리의 마음을 엽니다. 타인에게 우리의 눈을 뜹시다. 우리가 작을 때 삶의 진정한 의미에 우리의 눈을 뜹시다. 우리가 문제 앞에서 작게 느껴질 때, 십자가 앞에서, 질병 앞에서 작게 느껴질 때, 우리가 피로와 외로움을 체험할 때, 낙심하지 맙시다. 피상성의 가면이 벗겨지고, 우리의 근본적인 나약함이 다시 나타납니다. 그것은 우리의 공통점이고 우리의 보물입니다. 하느님과 함께라면 약점은 장애물이 아니라 기회이기 때문입니다. 아름다운 기도는 다음과 같을 것입니다. “주님, 저의 연약함을 보십시오....” 그리고 그분께 나약함을 열거합니다. 이것은 하느님 앞에서 취하는 좋은 태도입니다.

Indeed, it is precisely in weakness that we discover how much God takes care of us. The Gospel today says that Jesus is very tender with the little ones: “He took them in His arms and blessed them, laying His hands upon them” (v. 16). The difficulties and situations that reveal our weakness are privileged opportunities to experience His love. Those who pray with perseverance know this well: in dark or lonely moments, God’s tenderness towards us makes itself, so to speak, even more present. When we are little, we feel God’s tenderness more. This tenderness gives us peace; this tenderness makes us grow, because God draws close to us in His way, which is nearness, compassion and tenderness. And, when we feel we are little, small, for whatever reason, the Lord comes closer, we feel he is closer. He gives us peace; he makes us grow. In prayer the Lord draws us close to him, like a father with his child. This is how we become great: not in the illusory pretence of our self-sufficiency – this makes no-one great - but in the strength of placing all our hope in the Father, just like the little ones do, they do this.

진정, 바로 연약함 속에서 우리는 하느님께서 우리를 얼마나 돌보고 계신지 알게 됩니다. 오늘 복음은 예수님께서 어린 아이들에게 매우 다정하시다고 얘기합니다. “그러고 나서 어린이들을 끌어안으시고 그들에게 손을 얹어 축복해 주셨다.” (16절) 어려움과 우리의 연약함을 드러내는 상황들은 그분의 사랑을 경험하는 특권적인 기회들입니다. 끈기 있게 기도하는 사람들은 이것을 잘 압니다. 어둡거나 외로운 순간에 우리를 향한 하느님의 다정함은 말하자면 훨씬 더 현존합니다. 우리가 작을 때 우리는 하느님의 다정함을 더 느낍니다. 이 다정함이 우리에게 평화를 줍니다. 이 다정함이 우리를 성장시킵니다. 하느님께서 그분의 방식으로 즉 친밀함, 연민, 그리고 다정함으로 우리에게 가까이 오시기 때문입니다. 그리고 우리가 어떤 이유에서든 낮고 작다고 느낄 때 주님께서 더 가까이 오시고 우리는 그분이 더 가까이 계신 것을 느낍니다. 그분은 우리에게 평화를 주십니다. 그분은 우리를 성장시키십니다. 기도 안에서 아버지가 아이에게 하듯이 주님께서 우리를 가까이 당기십니다. 이렇게 우리는 위대해집니다. 아무도 위대하게 할 수 없는 자급자족의 허황된 가식이 아니라 어린아이들이 하듯이 - 어린이들이 이것을 합니다. - 우리의 모든 희망을 아버지께 두는 힘으로 위대해집니다.

Today let us ask the Virgin Mary for a huge grace, that of littleness: to be children who trust the Father, certain that He will not fail to take care of us.

오늘 우리는 동정 마리아께 크나큰 은총을 청합시다. 작음의 은총, 아버지께서 우리를 반드시 돌보실 것이라고 확신하며 아버지를 신뢰하는 어린이가 되는 은총을 청합시다.

After the Angelus, the Pope continued:

Dear brothers and sisters, I am very saddened by what has happened in recent days in the prison of Guayaquil, Ecuador. A terrible outbreak of violence between inmates belonging to rival gangs has left more than a hundred dead and many injured. I pray for them and for their families. May God help us heal the wounds of crime, that enslaves the poorest. And may He help those who work every day to make prison life more humane.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 저는 최근 에콰도르의 과야킬 감옥에서 일어난 일에 대해 매우 슬퍼합니다. 라이벌 갱단에 속한 수감자들 간의 끔찍한 폭력 사태로 100명 이상이 사망하고 많은 부상자가 발생했습니다. 저는 그들과 그들의 가족을 위해 기도합니다. 하느님, 가장 가난한 사람들을 노예로 만드는 범죄의 상처를 저희가 치유하도록 도와주소서! 그리고 하느님, 감옥생활을 보다 인간적으로 만들기 위해 매일 애쓰는 사람들을 도와주소서!

I wish once again to implore from God the gift of peace for the beloved land of Myanmar: may the hands of those who live there no longer wipe away tears of pain and death, but instead join together to overcome difficulties and work together to bring peace.

하느님께 사랑하는 미얀마 땅에 평화의 선물을 주십사고 다시 한 번 간청합니다. 그곳에 사는 이들의 손이 더 이상 고통과 죽음의 눈물을 닦지 않고, 대신에 어려움을 극복하고 평화를 가져오기 위해 함께 협력하게 하소서!

Today, in Catanzaro, Maria Antonio Samà and Gaetana Tolomeo, two women condemned to physical immobility throughout their lives, will be beatified. Sustained by divine grace, they embraced the cross of their infirmity, transforming their pain into praise for the Lord. Their bed became a spiritual reference point and a place of prayer and Christian growth for many people who found comfort and hope there. Let us applaud the new Blesseds!

오늘 Catanzaro에서 평생 동안 신체적으로 움직일 수 없다는 선고를 받은 두 여성, Maria Antonio Samà와 Gaetana Tolomeo, 이 시복됩니다. 하느님의 은총으로 지탱된 그들은 연약함의 십자가를 껴안고 그들의 고통을 주님찬양으로 바꾸었습니다. 그들의 침대는 그곳에서 위안과 희망을 찾은 많은 사람들에게 영적 기준점과 기도와 크리스천 성장의 장소가 되었습니다. 새로운 복자들에게 환호의 박수를 보냅시다.

On this first Sunday of October, our thoughts turn to the faithful gathered at the Shrine of Pompeii for the recitation of the Supplication to the Virgin Mary. During this month, let us renew together our commitment to praying the Holy Rosary.

오늘 10월 첫 주일에 우리는 성모 마리아께 바치는 청원기도를 드리기 위해 폼페이 성지에 모인 신자들을 생각합니다. 10월 한 달 동안, 우리 다 함께 묵주기도에 대한 우리의 다짐을 새롭게 합시다.

I greet you, dear Romans and pilgrims! In particular, the faithful of Wépion, diocese of Namur, in Belgium; the young people of Uzzano, in the diocese of Pescia; and young people with disabilities who have come from Modena, accompanied by the Little Sisters of Jesus the Worker and by volunteers. In this regard, today in Italy is the Day for the removal of architectural barriers: everyone may lend a hand for a society where no-one feels excluded. Thank you for your work.
