Pope's Address Before the Angelus [Saint Peter's Square] (Sunday, 20 June 2021)

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Buongiorno! In today’s liturgy the episode of the storm calmed by Jesus (Mk 4:35-41) is told. The boat on which the disciples are crossing the lake is beaten by the wind and waves and they are afraid they will sink. Jesus is with them on the boat, yet he is in the stern asleep on the cushion. The disciples, filled with fear, cry out to him: “Teacher, do you not care if we perish?” (v. 38).

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 오늘의 전례는 예수님께서 잠잠하게 하신 폭풍에 대해 얘기합니다. (마르코 4,35-41) 호수를 건너기 위해 탄 배가 바람과 파도를 만나서 제자들은 침몰할까봐 두려워하고 있습니다. 예수님께서도 배에 그들과 함께 계시지만 고물에서 베개를 베고 주무시고 계십니다. 겁에 질린 제자들은 예수님께 외칩니다. “스승님, 저희가 죽게 되었는데도 걱정되지 않으십니까?” (38절)

And quite often we too, beaten by the trials of life, have cried out to the Lord: “Why do you remain silent and do nothing for me?”. Especially when it seems we are sinking, because of love or the project in which we have laid great hopes disappears; or when we are at the mercy of the unrelenting waves of anxiety; or when we feel we are drowning in problems or lost in the middle of the sea of life, with no course and no harbour. Or even, in the moments in which the strength to go forward fails us, because we have no job, or an unexpected diagnosis makes us fear for our health or that of a loved one. There are many moments in which we feel we are in a storm; we feel we are almost done in.

우리도 자주 삶의 어려움을 맞아 주님께 외쳤습니다. “왜 조용히 계시고 저를 위해 아무것도 하지 않으십니까?” 특히 우리가 가라앉는 것 같을 때, 우리가 크게 희망을 걸었던 사랑 또는 프로젝트가 사라지려고 하기 때문에, 또는 우리가 끊임없는 근심의 파도 앞에서 속수무책일 때, 또는 문제들 속에 익사하려고 할 때, 또는 삶의 바다 한 가운데에서 좌표도 항구도 없이 길을 잃었을 때 주님께 소리를 지릅니다. 또한, 직업이 없어서, 또는 예상치 못한 진단으로 우리의 건강 또는 사랑하는 사람의 건강에 대해 겁을 먹을 때, 앞으로 나갈 기력이 쇠하는 순간에 그렇게 합니다. 우리가 폭풍 안에 있다고 느끼는 순간들이 많습니다. 우리는 거의 끝났다고 느낍니다.

In these situations and in many others, we too feel suffocated by fear and, like the disciples, risk losing sight of the most important thing. On the boat, in fact, even if he is sleeping, Jesus is there, and he shares with his own all that is happening. His slumber, when on the one hand it surprises us, on the other it puts us to the test. The Lord is there, present; indeed, he waits – so to speak – for us to engage him, to invoke him, to put him at the centre of what we are experiencing. His slumber causes us to wake up.

이러한 상황들 그리고 많은 다른 상황들 안에서 우리도 제자들처럼 두려움으로 질식한다고 느낍니다. 그래서 가장 중요한 것을 보지 못하는 위험에 빠집니다. 사실 배 안에 자고 계시지만 예수님께서 계시고, 그분은 일어나는 모든 일을 제자들과 공유하고 계십니다. 그분의 잠은 한편으로 우리를 놀라게 하고 다른 한 편 우리를 테스트합니다. 주님께서 거기에 계시고 현존하십니다. 참으로 그분은 기다리고 계십니다. 우리가 그분을 참여시키고 그분을 불러내고 우리가 체험하고 있는 일의 중심에 모시기를 기다리십니다. 그분의 잠이 우리를 깨웁니다.
 
Because to be disciples of Jesus it is not enough to believe God is there, that he exists, but we must put ourselves out there with him; we must also raise our voice with him. Hear this: we must cry out to him. Prayer, many times, is a cry: “Lord, save me!”. I was watching, on the programme “In his image”, today, the Day of Refugees, many who come in large boats and at the moment of drowning cry out: “Save us!”. In our life too the same thing happens: “Lord, save us!”, and prayer becomes a cry.

예수님의 제자가 되기 위해서 하느님께서 거기 계시다는 것, 그분이 존재한다는 것을 믿는 것으로 충분하지 않기 때문에 우리는 그분과 함께 거기에 있어야 합니다. 우리는 또한 그분과 함께 목소리를 높여야 합니다. 이것을 들으십시오. 우리는 그분께 외쳐야 합니다. 기도는 자주 외침입니다. “주님, 저를 구해주십시오!” 오늘 난민의 날에 저는 프로그램에서 “그분의 이미지”를 보고 있습니다. 큰 배를 타고 오는 많은 난민들, 그리고 익사의 순간에 “우리를 구해주십시오!”라고 외치는 많은 난민들입니다. 우리의 삶에서도 같은 일이 생깁니다. “주님, 우리를 구해주십시오!” 기도는 외침이 됩니다.   

Today we can ask ourselves: what are the winds that beat against my life? What are the waves that hinder my navigation, and put my spiritual life, my family life, even my psychic life in danger? Let us say all this to Jesus; let us tell him everything. He wants this; he wants us to grab hold of him to find shelter from the unexpected waves of life. The Gospel recounts that the disciples approach Jesus, wake him and speak to him (cf. v. 38).

오늘 우리는 자문할 수 있습니다. 나의 삶을 때리는 폭풍은 무엇들이 있나요? 나의 여정을 방해하고, 나의 영적 삶, 나의 가족의 삶, 나의 영혼의 삶까지 위험에 빠지게 하는 파도는 무엇들이 있나요? 이 모든 것을 예수님께 말씀드립시다. 그분께 모든 것을 말씀 드립시다. 그분은 이것을 원하십니다. 그분은 우리가 삶의 예상치 못한 파도로부터 피난처를 찾기 위해서 그분을 붙잡기를 원하십니다. 복음은 제자들이 예수님께 다가가서 그분을 깨우고 그분께 말씀드린다고 얘기합니다. (38절 참조)

This is the beginning of our faith: to recognize that alone we are unable to stay afloat; that we need Jesus like sailors need the stars to find their course. Faith begins from believing that we are not enough for ourselves, from feeling in need of God. When we overcome the temptation to close ourselves off, when we overcome the false religiosity that does not want to disturb God, when we cry out to him, he can work wonders in us. It is the gentle and extraordinary power of prayer, which works miracles.

이것이 우리의 믿음의 시작입니다. 혼자서는 물 위에 떠있을 수 없다는 것을 알아차리는 것, 항로를 찾기 위해서 선원들이 별을 필요로 하듯이 우리는 예수님이 필요하다는 것을 알아차리는 것입니다. 믿음은 우리 자신만으로 충분치 않다는 것, 하느님의 필요를 느끼는 것으로부터 시작됩니다. 우리를 가두는 유혹을 극복할 때, 우리가 하느님을 귀찮게 하면 안 된다는 거짓종교를 극복할 때, 우리가 그분께 외칠 때, 그분께서 우리 안에 놀라운 일을 할 수 있으십니다. 기적을 일으키는 것은 부드럽고 비범한 기도의 힘입니다.

Jesus, begged by the disciples, calms the wind and waves. And he asks them a question, a question which also pertains to us: “Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?” (v. 40). The disciples were gripped with fear, because they were focused on the waves more than looking at Jesus. And fear leads us to look at the difficulties, the awful problems and not to look at the Lord, who many times is sleeping. It is this way for us too: how often we remain fixated on problems rather than going to the Lord and casting our concerns into him! How often we leave the Lord in a corner, at the bottom of the boat of life, to wake him only in a moment of need!

제자들의 간청을 받으신 예수님께서 바람과 파도를 잠재우십니다. 그리고 제자들에게 질문을 하십니다. 우리에게도 해당되는 질문입니다. “왜 겁을 내느냐? 아직도 믿음이 없느냐?” (40절) 제자들은 겁에 질렸었습니다. 예수님을 보지 않고 파도에 집중했었기 때문입니다. 두려움은 우리를 대부분 자고 계신 예수님을 보지 않고 어려움과 끔찍한 문제들을 보도록 이끕니다. 우리도 이런 식입니다. 얼마나 자주 우리는 주님께 가서 우리의 걱정을 그분께 말씀드리는 대신 문제들에 집착하고 있나요? 얼마나 자주 우리는 주님을 구석에, 삶의 배의 바닥에 남겨두고 꼭 필요할 때에만 그분을 깨우나요? 

Today, let us ask for the grace of a faith that never tires of seeking the Lord, of knocking at the door of his Heart. May the Virgin Mary, who in her life never stopped trusting in God, reawaken in us the basic need of entrusting ourselves to him each day.

오늘 우리 주님을 찾는 것과 그분의 마음의 문을 두드리는 것에 절대로 지치지 않는 믿음의 은총을 청합시다. 일생동안 하느님을 믿는 것을 절대로 멈추지 않으셨던 동정 마리아여, 저희 안에 매일 저희 자신을 그분께 맡기는 기본적인 필요성을 다시 깨워주소서.
