Pope's Address Before the Angelus [Saint Peter's Square] (Sunday, 30 May 2021)

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Buongiorno! On this feast in which we celebrate God: the mystery of the one God. And this God is the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Three persons, but God is one! The Father is God; the Son is God; the Spirit is God. But they are not three gods: it is one God in three Persons. It is a mystery that Jesus Christ revealed to us: the Holy Trinity. Today we stop to celebrate this mystery, because the Persons are not adjectives of God, no. They are real, diverse, different Persons; they are not – as that philosopher used to say – ‘emanations of God’, no, no! They are Persons. There is the Father to whom I pray with the Our Father; there is the Son, who gave me redemption, justification; there is the Holy Spirit who abides in us and inhabits the Church.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 오늘 축일에 하느님, 한 분이신 하느님의 신비를 기념합니다. 이 하느님께서는 아버지이시고, 아들이시고, 성령이십니다. 3 위격이시지만 하느님께서는 한 분이십니다. 아버지께서 하느님이시고, 아들이 하느님이시고, 성령께서 하느님이십니다. 그러나 그분들이 3 분의 하느님이 아니십니다. 3 위격 안의 한 분 하느님이십니다. 그것은 예수 그리스도께서 우리에게 드러내신 신비입니다. 즉 거룩하신 삼위이십니다. 우리는 오늘 이 신비를 기념하기 위해 멈췄습니다. 위격은 하느님의 형용사가 아닙니다. 그들은 실제이고 다양하고 다른 위격입니다. 그들은 철학자가 - ‘하느님의 발산’ 이라고 말했던 그런 분들이 아닙니다. 그들은 위격입니다. 제가 ‘주님의 기도’를 바치는 아버지, 저에게 구원과 의로움을 주신 아들, 우리 안에 사시고 교회에 거하시는 성령께서 계십니다.

And this speaks to our heart because we find it encompassed in that expression of Saint John which summarizes all of Revelation: “God is love” (1 Jn 4:8,16). The Father is love; the Son is love; the Holy Spirit is love. And inasmuch as he is love, God, while being one alone, is not solitude but communion, among the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Because love is essentially a gift of self, and in its original and infinite reality it is the Father who gives himself by generating his Son, who in turn gives himself to the Father, and their mutual love is the Holy Spirit, the bond of their unity. It is not easy to understand, but we can live this mystery, all of us, we can live a great deal.

이것은 우리의 가슴을 울립니다. 성 요한이 모든 계시를 종합한 표현에 그것이 포함되어 있기 때문입니다. “하느님께서 사랑이시다.” (1 요한 4,8, 16) 아버지께서 사랑이시고, 아드님이 사랑이시고, 성령께서 사랑이십니다. 그분께서 사랑이시 때문에 한 분이신 하느님께서 고독하지 않으시고 아버지, 아들, 성령 사이의 친교이십니다. 사랑은 근본적으로 자신의 선물이고 원천적이고 무한한 실제 안에 아드님을 내어주심으로써 아버지가 자신을 주시고, 아드님은 자신을 아버지께 드리고, 그들의 상호 사랑은 일치의 끈인 성령이십니다. 이해하기 쉽지 않지만 우리는 이 신비를 살 수 있고 우리 모두는 아주 많이 살 수 있습니다.

This mystery of the Trinity was revealed to us by Jesus himself. He showed us the face of God as merciful Father; he presented Himself, true man, as the Son of God and Word of the Father, the Saviour who gives his life for us; and he spoke of the Holy Spirit who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Spirit of Truth, Paraclete Spirit – we spoke last Sunday about this word, ‘Paraclete’ – meaning Consoler and Advocate. And when Jesus appeared to the Apostles after the Resurrection, Jesus invited them to evangelize “all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Mt 28:19).

이 삼위일체 신비는 예수님께서 손수 우리에게 드러내셨습니다. 그분은 우리에게 자비로운 아버지 하느님의 얼굴을 보여주셨고 예수님께서 우리에게 진정한 사람, 하느님의 아드님, 아버지의 말씀, 우리를 위해 자신의 생명을 주신 구원자로 자신을 보여주셨습니다. 그리고 아버지와 아들로부터 나오는 성령에 대해 말씀하셨습니다. 진리의 영, 파라클릿 영 - 우리가 지난 주일에 ‘파라클릿’이란 단어를 말했었지요. - 위로자 그리고 옹호자를 뜻합니다.  부활 후에 예수님께서 사도들에게 나타나셨을 때 예수님께서 사도들에게 “모든 민족들을 제자로 삼아, 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 주라”고 초대하셨습니다.” (마태오 28, 19)

Today’s celebration, therefore, makes us contemplate this marvelous mystery of love and of light from which we come and toward which our earthly journey is guided.

그래서 오늘의 축일은 사랑과 빛의 이 놀라운 신비를 묵상하게 합니다. 그 사랑과 빛으로부터 우리가 오고 우리의 지상의 여정이 그 사랑과 빛을 향해 이끌려집니다. 

In the message of the Gospel and in every form of the Christian mission, one cannot overlook this unity to which Jesus calls, among us, following the unity of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: one cannot overlook this unity. The beauty of the Gospel asks to be lived – unity – and proven in the harmony among us, who are so diverse! And this unity I dare say is essential to Christians: it is not an attitude, a manner of speaking, no; it is essential, because it is the unity that is born from love, from the mercy of God, from the justification of Jesus Christ and from the presence of the Holy Spirit in our hearts.

복음의 메시지 안에 그리고 모든 형태의 크리스천 사명 안에서, 아버지, 아들, 성령의 일치를 따라 예수님께서 우리를 부르시는 이 일치, 우리 가운데의 이 일치를 간과할 수 없습니다. 누구도 이 일치를 간과할 수 없습니다. 살도록 요구하는 복음의 아름다움 - 일치- 는 매우 다양한 우리들 가운데의 조화 안에서 증명되었습니다. 이 일치, 저는 감히 크리스천들에게 근본적이라고 말합니다. 그것은 태도나 말하는 매너가 아니고, 필수적입니다. 왜냐하면 그것은 사랑으로부터, 하느님의 신비로부터, 예수 그리스도의 의롭게 하심으로부터, 그리고 우리 마음속의 성령의 현존으로부터 내어났기 때문입니다.

Mary Most Holy, in her simplicity and humility, reflects the Beauty of the Triune God, because she fully welcomed Jesus into her life. May she sustain our faith; may she make us worshipers of God and servants of our brothers and sisters.

지극히 거룩하신 마리아는 그의 단순성과 겸손 안에 삼위일체 하느님의 아름다움을 반영합니다. 성모님께서 예수님을 그분의 삶으로 환영하였기 때문입니다. 마리아여 우리의 믿음을 지켜주소서. 우리를 하느님의 경배자 그리고 우리의 형제자매들의 종이 되게 하소서.
