Pope's Address Before the Angelus [Saint Peter's Square] (Sunday, 9 May 2021)

Dear Brothers and Sisters, buongiorno! In this Sunday’s Gospel passage (Jn 15:9-17) after having compared Himself to the vine and us to the branches, Jesus, explains what fruit is borne by those who remain united to Him: this fruit is love. He again repeats the key-verb: abide. He invites us to abide in his love so that his joy may be in us and our joy may be full (vv. 9-11). To abide in Jesus’ love.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 오늘 주일 복음구절 (요한 15,9-17)에서 예수님께서 자신과 우리를 포도나무와 가지로 비교하신 후에 자신과 결합되어 머무는 사람들이 무슨 열매를 맺는지 설명하십니다. 이 열매는 사랑입니다. 예수님께서는 중요한 동사 “머물다”를 다시 반복하십니다. 예수님께서 당신의 기쁨이 우리 안에 있고 우리의 기쁨이 충만하게 되기 위해 우리에게 자신의 사랑 안에 머물도록 초대하십니다. 예수님의 사랑 안에 머무는 것입니다.

Let us ask ourselves: what this love is in which Jesus tells us to abide to have his joy? What is this love? It is the love that originates in the Father, because “God is love” (1 Jn 4:8). This love of God, of the Father, flows like a river in his Son Jesus and through Him comes to us, his creatures. Indeed, he says: “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you” (Jn 15:9). The love Jesus gives us is the same with which the Father loves Him: pure love, unconditional, freely given love. It cannot be bought, it is free. By giving it to us, Jesus treats us like friends – with this love –, making us know the Father, and he involves us in his same mission for the life of the world.

우리 자신에게 물어봅시다. 예수님께서 그분의 기쁨을 갖도록 머무르라고 하시는 이 사랑은 무엇일까요? 이 사랑은 어떤 사랑일까요? 그것은 아버지 안에서 시작되는 사랑입니다. 왜냐하면 “하느님께서 사랑이시기” (1 요한 4,8) 때문입니다. 하느님의 이 사랑, 아버지의 이 사랑은 그분의 아들 예수님 안에 강물처럼 흐르며, 그분을 통해서 우리에게, 모든 피조물에게 옵니다. 진정, 예수님께서 말씀하십니다. “아버지께서 나를 사랑하신 것처럼 나도 너희를 사랑하였다.” (요한 15,9) 예수님께서 우리에게 주시는 사랑은 아버지께서 예수님을 사랑하시는 같은 사랑입니다. 즉 순수한 사랑, 무조건적인 사랑, 거저 주시는 사랑입니다. 그 사랑은 돈으로 살 수 없고, 거저입니다. 그 사랑을 우리에게 주심으로써 예수님께서는 우리를 친구로 대하십니다. 이 사랑으로써 우리가 아버지를 알게 하시고, 그분의 지상에서의 같은 사명에 우리를 참여시키십니다.

And then, we can ask ourselves the question, how do we abide in this love? Jesus says: “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love” (v. 10). Jesus summarized his commandments in a single one, this: “that you love one another as I have loved you” (v. 12). To love as Jesus means to offer yourself in service, at the service of your brothers and sisters, as he did in washing the feet of the disciples. It also means going outside of ourselves, detaching ourselves from our own human certainties, from earthly comforts, in order to open ourselves up to others, especially those in greater need. It means making ourselves available, as we are and with what we have. This means to love not in word but in deeds.

이제 우리자신에게 자문할 수 있습니다. 이 사랑 안에 우리는 어떻게 머무르나요? 예수님께서 말씀하십니다. “내가 내 아버지의 계명을 지켜 그분의 사랑 안에 머무르는 것처럼, 너희도 내 계명을 지키면 내 사랑 안에 머무를 것이다.” (10절) 예수님께서는 자신의 계명을 하나로 요약하십니다. 이것입니다. “내가 너희를 사랑한 것처럼 너희도 서로 사랑하여라.” 예수님처럼 사랑하는 것은 예수님께서 제자들의 발을 씻으시면서 하셨듯이 여러분의 형제자매에 대한 봉사에 자신을 바치는 것을 뜻합니다. 그것은 또한 우리들 자신 밖으로 나와, 다른 사람들에게, 특별히 큰 어려움을 겪는 사람들에게 우리 자신을 개방하기 위해, 우리의 인간적 확신으로부터, 지상의 편안함으로부터 우리 자신을 떼어놓은 것을 뜻합니다. 그것은 우리 자신을 있는 그대로 그리고 우리가 가진 것 그대로 (봉사하기 위해) 대기하는 것을 뜻합니다. 이것은 말이 아니라 행동으로 사랑하는 것을 뜻합니다.   

To love like Christ means saying ‘no’ to other ‘loves’ that the world offers us: love of money – those who love money do not love as Jesus loves -, love of success, vanity, [love] of power…. These deceptive paths of “love” distance us from the Lord’s love and lead us to become more and more selfish, narcissistic, overbearing. And being overbearing leads to a degeneration of love, to the abuse others, to making our loved ones suffer. I am thinking of the unhealthy love that turns into violence – and how many women are victims of  violence these days. This is not love.

예수님처럼 사랑하는 것은 세상이 우리에게 제시하는 “사랑들”에게 ‘no'라고 말하는 것을 뜻합니다. 그 사랑들은 돈을 사랑하는 것 - 돈을 사랑하는 사람들은 예수님께서 사랑하시는 것처럼 사랑하지 않습니다, - 성공, 허영심, 권력을 사랑하는 것....입니다. 기만적인 “사랑”의 길은 우리를 주님의 사랑으로부터 멀게 하고 우리를 점점 더 이기적이고, 자기애 적으로, 고압적으로 이끕니다. 고압적인 사랑은 사랑의 퇴보로, 다른 사람들에 대한 학대로, 우리의 사랑하는 사람들의 고통으로 이끕니다. 저는 폭력으로 바뀌는 건강하지 못한 사랑을 얘기하고 있습니다. 요즈음 얼마나 많은 여인들이 폭력의 희생자가 되고 있습니까? 이것은 사랑이 아닙니다.

To love as the Lord loves us means to appreciate the people beside us, to respect their freedom, to love them as they are, not as we want them to be, gratuitously. Ultimately, Jesus asks us to abide in his love, to dwell in his love, not in our ideas, not in our own self-worship. Those who dwell in self-worship live in the mirror: always looking at themselves. Those who overcome the ambition to control and manage others. Not controlling, serving them. Opening our heart to others, this is love, giving ourselves to others.

주님께서 우리를 사랑하시는 것처럼 사랑하는 것은 우리 곁의 사람들을 인정하고, 그들의 자유를 존중하고, 우리가 바라는 대로가 아닌, 있는 그대로의 그들을 거저 사랑하는 것을 의미합니다. 궁극적으로 예수님께서 우리에게 우리들의 생각 안에, 그리고 자기숭배 안에 머물지 말고, 그분의 사랑 안에 머무르라고, 그분의 사랑 안에 거하라고 청하십니다. 자기 숭배 안에 사는 사람들은 거울 안에 항상 자신들을 보며 삽니다. 다른 사람들을 조종하고 관리하는 욕망을 극복한 사람들. 조종하지 않고, 그들에게 봉사하는 것. 우리의 마음을 다른 사람들에게 여는 것, 이것이 사랑이고 다른 사람들에게 자신을 내어주는 것입니다. 

Dear brothers and sisters, where does this abiding in the Lord’s love lead? Where does it lead us? Jesus told us: “That my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” (v. 11). And the Lord wants the joy he possesses, because he is in complete communion with the Father, to be in us insofar as we are united to Him. The joy of knowing we are loved by God despite our infidelities enables us to face the trials of life confidently, makes us live through crises so as to emerge from them better. Our being true witnesses consists in living this joy, because joy is the distinctive sign of a true Christian. True Christians are not sad; they always have that joy inside, even in difficult moments.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 이 주님의 사랑 안에 머무는 것이 우리를 어디로 이끌까요? 어디로 우리를 이끌까요? 예수님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “내 기쁨이 너희 안에 있고 또 너희 기쁨이 충만하게 하려는 것이다.” (11절) 주님께서 아버지와 완전한 친교 안에 계시기 때문에 자신이 소유하신 기쁨을 우리가 그분께 결합하여 있는 만큼 우리 안에 있게 하시기를 원하십니다. 우리가 하느님으로부터 사랑받는 것을 아는 기쁨은 우리의 불충실에도 불구하고 우리가 삶의 시련을 당당하게 맞설 수 있게 합니다. 그리고 위기를 뚫고 위기에서 더 나아져서 나올 수 있게 합니다. 우리가 진정한 증인이 되는 것은 이 기쁨을 사는 데에 있습니다. 기쁨이 진정한 크리스천의 독특한 표시이기 때문입니다. 진정한 크리스천은 슬퍼하지 않습니다. 그들은 어려운 순간에 조차도 항상 내면에 그 기쁨을 가지고 있습니다.

May the Virgin Mary help us to abide in Jesus’ love and to grow in love for everyone, witnessing to the joy of the Risen Lord.

동정 마리아여 저희를 도우셔서 저희가 예수님의 사랑 안에 머물고, 모든 사람들에 대한 사랑을 키우고, 부활하신 주님의 기쁨의 증거자가 되게 하소서.
