Pope's Address Before the Angelus [Saint Peter's Square] (Sunday, 25 April 2021)

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno! On this Fourth Sunday of Easter, called Good Shepherd Sunday, the Gospel (Jn 10:11-18) presents Jesus as the true shepherd who defends, knows and loves his sheep. The “mercenary” is the opposite of the Good Shepherd, the one who does not care about the sheep because they are not his. He does the job only for pay and is not concerned about defending them: when a wolf arrives, he flees and abandons them (cf vv. 12-13). Instead, Jesus, the true shepherd, defends us always and saves us from so many difficult situations, dangerous situations through the light of his word and the strength of his presence that we always experience if we want to listen, every day.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 착한 목자 주일로 알려진 오늘 부활제4주일에 복음은(요한 10,11-18) 예수님을 자신의 양떼를 보호하고, 알고, 사랑하는 진정한 목자로 소개합니다. “삯꾼”은 착한 목자의 반대로서 양떼가 자신의 것이 아니므로 양떼에 대해 염려하지 않습니다. 그는 벌이를 위해서 업무를 수행할 뿐, 양들을 보호하는데 관심을 두지 않습니다. 늑대가 오면 그는 양들을 버리고 도망갑니다. (12-13절) 대신에 진정한 목자이신 예수님께서는 항상 우리를 보호하시고 수많은 어려운 상황에서, 위험한 상황에서 그분의 말씀의 빛을 통해서, 그리고 우리가 매일 경청하기를 원하면 항상 체험할 수 있는 그분의 현존의 힘을 통해서 우리를 구하십니다.     

The second aspect is that Jesus, the good shepherd, knows – the first aspect: defend; the second: he knows his sheep and the sheep know Him (v. 14). How beautiful and consoling it is to know that Jesus knows us one by one, that we are not unknown to Him, that our name is known to him! We are not a “mass”, a “multitude” for Him, no. We are unique individuals, each with his or her own story, he knows us with our own story, each with his or her own value, both because they have been created and have been redeemed by Christ.

두 번째 관점은 착한 목자 예수님께서 아십니다. - 첫 번째 관점: 보호하다: 두 번째 관점: 그분은 그분의 양떼를 아시고 양떼는 그분을 압니다. (14절) 예수님께서 우리를 한 사람 한 사람 아시고, 우리가 그분이 모르는 사람들이 아니고, 우리의 이름을 그분이 아신다는 것이 위안이 됩니다. 우리는 그분에게 “대중”, “다수”가 아닙니다. 우리는 독특한 개인으로서, 각자가 자신의 이야기를 지니고 있고, 그분께서 자신만의 이야기와 가치를 지닌 우리를 아십니다. 우리가 창조되고 그리스도에 의해서 구원받았기 때문입니다.

Each of us can say: Jesus, knows me! Each one of us: Jesus knows me! It is true, it is like this: He knows us like no other. Only He knows what is in our hearts, our intentions, our most hidden feelings. Jesus knows our strengths and our defects, and is always ready to care for us, to heal the wounds of our errors with the abundance of his mercy. In Him, the image the prophets had provided of the shepherd of the people of God is completely fulfilled: Jesus is concerned about his sheep, he gathers them, he binds their wounds, he heals their ailments. We can read this in Book of the Prophet Ezekiel (cf Ez 34:11-16).

우리 각자는 예수님께서 나를 아신다고, 우리 각자를 아신다고 말할 수 있습니다. 그것은 사실입니다. 그것은 이것과 같습니다. 그분께서 우리를 아시고 다른 사람들은 그분만큼 우리를 알지 못합니다. 그분만이 우리의 마음 안에 있는 것, 우리의 의도, 우리의 가장 숨겨진 느낌을 아십니다. 예수님께서 우리의 강점과 우리의 부족한 점을 아시고 항상 우리를 돌보시고, 풍성한 자비로 우리의 잘못을 치유하실 준비가 되어 있습니다. 예언자들이 하느님 백성의 목자로 예언했던 이미지가 그분 안에 완전히 이루어졌습니다. 예수님께서 그분의 양떼를 염려하시고 그들을 모으시고 그들의 상처를 싸매주시고, 병을 치유하십니다. 우리는 이것을 에제키엘 예언서에서 읽을 수 있습니다. (에제키엘 34,11-16)

Therefore, Jesus the Good Shepherd defends, knows, and above all loves his sheep. And this is why He gives His life for them (cf Jn 10:15). Love for his sheep, that is, for each one of us, would lead him to die on the cross. For this is the Father’s will – that no one should be lost. Christ’s love is not selective; it embraces everyone. He Himself reminds us of this in today’s Gospel when he says: “And I have other sheep, that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will heed my voice. So there shall be one flock, one shepherd” (Jn 10:16). These words testify to his universal concern: He is everyone’s shepherd. Jesus wants everyone to be able to receive the Father’s love and encounter God.

그러므로 착한 목자 예수님께서 그분의 양떼를 보호하시고, 아시고, 무엇보다도 사랑하십니다. 이 때문에 그분은 그들을 위해 그분의 생명을 주십니다. (요한 10,15) 그분의 양떼에 대한 사랑, 즉 우리 각자에 대한 사랑은 그분을 십자가에서 죽으시도록 이끕니다. 이것이 아버지의 뜻 - 아무도 잃어서는 안 된다 - 이기 때문입니다. 그리스도의 사랑은 선택적이 아니고 모든 사람을 껴안습니다. 그분 자신이 오늘의 복음에서 그것을 환기시키십니다. “그러나 나에게는 이 우리 안에 들지 않은 양들도 있다. 나는 그들도 데려와야 한다. 그들도 내 목소리를 알아듣고 마침내 한 목자 아래 한 양 떼가 될 것이다. (요한 10,16) 이 말씀은 그분의 보편 돌봄을 증언합니다. 그분은 모든 사람들의 목사이십니다. 예수님께서는 모든 사람들이 아버지의 사랑을 받고 하느님을 만날 수 있기를 원하십니다.

And the Church is called to carry on this mission of Christ. Beyond those who participate in our communities, there is the majority, many people, who do so only at particular moments or never. But this does not mean they are not God’s children: the Father entrusts everyone to Jesus the Good Shepherd, and he gave his life for everyone.

교회는 그리스도의 이 사명을 수행하도록 부름을 받았습니다. 우리의 공동체에 참여하는 사람들 너머에 특정한 순간에 참여하거나 전혀 참여하지 않는 다수의, 많은 사람들이 있습니다. 그러나 이것이 그들이 하느님의 자녀가 아니라는 것을 의미하지 않습니다. 아버지께서 모든 사람들을 착한 목자 예수님께 맡기시고 그분은 모두를 위해 자신의 생명을 내 주셨습니다.

Brothers and sisters, Jesus defends, knows and loves us, everyone. May Mary Most Holy help us to be the first to welcome and follow the Good Shepherd, to cooperate in the joy of his mission.

형제자매 여러분, 예수님께서 모든 사람들을 보호하시고, 아시고, 사랑하십니다. 지극히 거룩하신 마리아여, 저희를 도우셔서 저희가 착한 목자를 환영하고, 따르고, 그분 사명의 기쁨에 협력하는 첫째가 되게 하소서.
