Pope's Address Before the Angelus (August 16, 2020)

Dear brothers and sisters, good day! This Sunday’s Gospel (see Mt 15:21-28) describes the meeting between Jesus and the Canaanite woman. Jesus is to the north of Galilee, in foreign territory. The woman was not Jewish, she was Canaanite. Jesus is there to spend some time with His disciples away from the crowds, from the crowds whose numbers are always growing. And behold, a woman approached Him seeking help for her sick daughter: “Have mercy on me, Lord!” (v. 22). It is the cry that is born out of a life marked by suffering, from the sense of the helplessness of a mamma who sees her daughter tormented by evil who cannot be healed; she cannot heal her.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분 안녕하십니까? 오늘 복음에 (마태오 15,21-28) 예수님과 가나안 여인의 만남을 묘사합니다. 예수님께서는 이방인의 구역인 갈릴레아의 북쪽에 계십니다. 그 여인은 유대인이 아닌 가나안 사람이었습니다. 예수님께서는 군중들과 떨어져 그곳에서 제자들과 시간을 가지려고 하십니다. 군중들은 계속 수가 불어납니다. 보십시오. 한 여인이 자신의 병든 딸을 위해 도움을 청하려고 예수님께 접근하였습니다. “주님, 저에게 자비를 베풀어 주십시오!” (22절) 그것은 고통으로 점철된 삶에서 나오는 외침입니다. 자신의 딸이 마귀에 들려 고통을 당하는 것을 보는 엄마의 무력감으로부터 나오는 외침입니다. 딸은 치유 받을 수 없습니다. 그녀는 딸을 치유할 수 없습니다.

Jesus initially ignores her, but this mother insists; she insists, even when the Master says to the disciples that His mission is directed only to “the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (v. 24) and not to the pagans. She continues to beg Him, and at that point, He puts her to the test, citing a proverb. It’s a bit…this seems almost a bit cruel, but she puts her to the test: “It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs” (v. 26). And right away, the woman, quick, anguished, responds: “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table” (v. 27).

예수님께서 처음에는 그녀를 무시합니다. 그러나 이 엄마는 주장합니다. 주님이 제자들에게 자신의 사명은 이방인이 아닌 오직 “이스라엘 집안의 잃어버린 양들을” 위해 파견되었다고 (22절) 말씀하시는데도 그녀는 주장합니다. 그녀는 계속해서 예수님께 도움을 청합니다. 그 때에 예수님께서 속담을 인용하시면서 그녀를 시험하십니다. 그것은 좀 잔인한 것 같습니다만 그녀는 기꺼이 시험을 치릅니다. “자녀들의 빵을 집어 강아지들에게 던져 주는 것은 좋지 않다.” (26절) 곧바로 그녀가 고뇌에 찬 어조로 대답합니다. “주님, 그렇습니다. 그러나 강아지들도 주인의 상에서 떨어지는 부스러기는 먹습니다.” (27절)

And with these words, that mother shows that she has perceived the goodness of the Most High God present in Jesus who is open to any of His creatures necessities. And this wisdom, filled with trust, touches Jesus’s heart and provokes words of admiration: “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish” (v. 28). What type of faith is great? Great faith is that which brings its own story, marked even by wounds, and brings it to the Lord’s feet asking Him to heal them, to give them meaning.

이 말씀으로 그 엄마는 그녀가 자신의 피조물의 어떠한 필요에도 개방적이신 예수님 안에 계신 지극히 높으신 하느님의 선을 파악하고 있다는 것을 보여줍니다. 믿음에 찬 이 지혜가 예수님의 마음을 움직여서 감탄의 말씀을 불러일으킵니다. “아, 여인아! 네 믿음이 참으로 크구나. 네가 바라는 대로 될 것이다.” (28절) 어떤 형태의 믿음이 클까요? 큰 믿음은 아무리 상처로 얼룩져 있더라도 자신의 이야기를 말씀 드리는 것입니다. 주님의 발아래 가지고 와서 주님께서 치유해주시기를, 그 상처들의 의미를 말씀해 주시기를 청하는 것입니다. 
 
Each one of us has our own story and it is not always a story “of export”, it is not always a clean story… Many times it is a difficult story, with a lot of pain, many misfortunes and many sins. What do I do with my story? Do I hide it? No! We must bring it before the Lord. “Lord, if You will it, you can heal me!” This is what this woman teaches us, this wonderful mother: the courage to bring our own painful story before God, before Jesus, to touch God’s tenderness, Jesus’s tenderness. Let’s try this story, this prayer: let each one of us think of his or her own story. There are always ugly things in a story, always.

우리 각자는 우리 자신의 이야기가 있고 그것은 항상 깨끗한 이야기는 아닙니다. 많은 경우에 어려운 얘기이고 많은 아픔과 많은 불행과 많은 죄를 포함하고 있습니다. 나의 이야기를 어떻게 할까요? 감출까요? 아닙니다. 우리는 그것을 주님 앞에 가지고 가야 합니다. “주님께서 원하시면 저를 치유하실 수 있습니다!” 이것이 이 여인이 우리에게 가르쳐주는 것입니다. 놀라운 엄마입니다. 용기를 내어 우리의 아픈 이야기를 하느님 앞에, 예수님 앞에 가져갑니다. 하느님의 부드러움, 예수님의 부드러움에 호소합니다. 이 이야기를 이 기도를 시도해봅시다. 우리 각자가 자신의 이야기를 생각해봅시다. 이야기 안에는 항상 추한 것들이 있습니다. 항상 그렇습니다.

Let us go to Jesus, knock on Jesus’s heart and say to Him: “Lord, if You will it, you can heal me!” And we can do this if we always have the face of Jesus before us, if we understand what Christ’s heart is like, what Jesus’s heart is like: a heart that feels compassion, that bears our pains, that bears our sins, our mistakes, our failures. But it is a heart that love us like that, as we are, without make-up: He loves us like that. “Lord, if You will it, you can heal me!” This is why it is necessary to understand Jesus, to be familiar with Jesus. I always go back to the advice that I give you: always carry a small pocket-size Gospel and read a passage every day. There you will find Jesus as He is, as He presents Himself; you will find Jesus who loves us, who loves us a lot, who tremendously wants our well-being. Let us remember the prayer: “Lord, if You will it, you can heal me!” A beautiful prayer. Carry the Gospel: in your purse, in your pocket and even on your mobile phone, to look at.

우리 예수님께로 가서 예수님의 마음을 두드리고 그분께 이렇게 말씀 드립시다. “주님께서 원하시면 저를 치유하실 수 있으십니다!” 그리고 우리가 항상 우리 앞에 예수님의 얼굴을 모시고 있고, 우리가 그리스도의 마음이 어떻다는 것을 알고, 예수님의 마음이 어떻다는 것을 알면 우리는 이것을 할 수 있습니다. 예수님의 마음은 가엾음을 느끼시고, 우리의 아픔을 품으시고, 우리의 죄악을 참으시고, 우리의 실수를 품으시고, 우리의 실패를 품으십니다. 우리를 있는 그대로 사랑하는 마음입니다. 화장하지 않은 우리를 그대로 사랑하십니다. 그분은 우리를 그렇게 사랑하십니다. “주님, 주님께서 원하시면 저를 치유하실 수 있으십니다!” 이것이 예수님을 이해하고, 예수님과 가까이 해야 할 이유입니다. 저는 항상 여러분에게 드리는 권고로 돌아갑니다. 항상 포켓 사이즈의 복음서를 가지고 다니십시오. 그리고 매일 읽으십시오. 거기에서 예수님의 본 모습을 발견할 것입니다. 예수님께서 드러내시는 자신을 발견할 것입니다. 여러분은 우리를 사랑하시는 예수님을, 우리를 무척 사랑하시는 예수님을, 우리의 안녕을 무척 원하시는 예수님을 발견할 것입니다. 그 기도를 기억합시다. “주님, 주님께서 원하시면 주님께서 저를 치유할 실 수 있습니다!” 아름다운 기도입니다. 복음서를 지니고 다니십시오. 가방에, 주머니에, 스마트폰에, 그리고 읽으십시오.   

May the Lord help us, all of us, to pray this beautiful prayer, that a pagan woman teaches us: not a Christian woman, not a Jewish woman, a pagan woman. May the Virgin Mary intercede with her prayer so that the joy of faith might grow in every baptized person as well as the desire to communicate it through a consistent witness of life, that she gives us the courage to approach Jesus and to say to Him: “Lord, if You will it, you can heal me!”

주님 저희를, 우리 모두를 도와주시어, 우리가 이방인 여인이 가르쳐 주는 이 아름다운 기도를 드리게 하소서! 그 여인은 크리스천 여인이 아닌, 유대인 여인이 아닌, 이방인 여인입니다. 동정 마리아여 중재하시어 모든 영세자가 믿음의 기쁨을 키워나가고, 그 기쁨을 삶의 일관된 증거를 통해 소통하게 하시고, 우리에게 예수님께 다가가 그분께 다음과 같이 말씀드릴 용기를 주소서. “주님, 주님께서 원하시면 주님께서 저를 치유하실 수 있습니다!”
