Pope's Address Before the Angelus (August 9, 2020)

Good morning! This Sunday’s Gospel passage (cf. Mt 14:22-33) speaks of Jesus walking on the water of the stormy lake. After feeding the crowds with five loaves and two fish – as we saw last Sunday – Jesus commands the disciples to get into the boat and return to the other shore. He dismisses the people and then climbs the hill, alone, to pray. He immerses himself in communion with the Father.

안녕하십니까? 금주의 복음 (마태오 14,22-33 참조) 은 폭풍이 일고 있는 호수의 물 위를 걸으시는 예수님에 대해 얘기합니다. 5개의 빵과 2마리의 물고기로 군중이 배부르게 먹게 하신 후에 (지난 주일의 복음) 예수님께서는 제자들에게 배를 타고 호수의 건너편으로 가라고 명하십니다. 예수님께서는 군중을 보내시고 언덕에 올라 혼자 기도하십니다. 예수님께서는 아버지와의 통교에 몰두하십니다.

During the crossing of the lake by night, the disciples’ boat is hindered by a sudden wind storm. At a certain point, they see someone walking on the water, coming toward them. Upset, they think it is a ghost and cry out in fear. Jesus reassures them: “Take heart, it is I; have no fear”. Then Peter answers: “Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water”. And Jesus tells him: “Come”. Peter gets out of the boat and takes a few steps; then the wind and waves frighten him and he begins to sink. “Lord, save me”, he cries, and Jesus grasps him by the hand and says to him: “O man of little faith, why did you doubt?”.

밤에 호수를 건너는 제자들의 배는 갑자기 부는 폭풍에 시달립니다. 어느 순간 그들은 물 위를 걸어서 그들에게 오는 사람을 봅니다. 놀라서 그들은 유령인줄 알고 두려움에 소리를 지릅니다. 예수님께서 그들을 안심시키십니다. “용기를 내어라. 나다. 두려워하지 마라.” 그러자 베드로가 말씀드립니다. “주님, 주님이시거든 저더러 물 위를 걸어오라고 명령하십시오.” 예수님께서 “오너라.” 하시자, 베드로가 배에서 내려 물 위를 걸어 몇 발자국 걸을 때 바람과 파도가 그를 두렵게 하여 그는 가라앉기 시작합니다. “주님, 저를 구해 주십시오.” 하고 소리를 지르고 예수님께서 곧 손을 내밀어 그를 붙잡으시고, 말씀하십니다. “이 믿음이 약한 자야, 왜 의심하였느냐?”

This narrative is a call to abandon ourselves trustingly to God in every moment of our life, especially in moments of trial and turmoil. When we have strong feelings of doubt and fear and we seem to be sinking, we must not be ashamed to cry out, like Peter: “Lord, save me” (v. 30). It is a beautiful prayer! And the gesture of Jesus, who immediately reaches out his hand and grasps that of his friend, should be contemplated at length: this is Jesus; he is the hand of the Father who never abandons us; the strong and faithful hand of the Father, who always and only wants what is good for us.

이 복음은 우리의 삶의 모든 순간에 특히 시험과 혼란의 순간에 우리 자신을 하느님께 전적으로 맡기라는 부르심입니다. 우리가 의심과 두려움의 강한 느낌을 갖고 우리가 가라앉는 것 같을 때 우리는 베드로처럼 “주님 저를 구해 주십시오.” (30절) 라고 외치는 것을 부끄러워하지 말아야 합니다. 그것은 아름다운 기도입니다. 예수님께서 즉시 손을 뻗치시어 그분 친구의 손을 잡으시는 모습은 오랫동안 묵상해야 합니다. 이분이 예수님이십니다. 그분은 우리를 절대로 버리지 않으시는 아버지의 손입니다. 아버지의 강하고 충실한 손입니다. 아버지께서는 항상 우리에게 좋은 것만을 원하십니다.

God is not the hurricane, the fire, the earthquake – as the narrative about the Prophet Elijah also recalls today; God is the light breeze that never imposes itself but asks to be heard (cf. 1 Kings 19:11-13). Having faith means, amid the storm, keeping your heart turned to God, to his love, to his Fatherly tenderness. Jesus wanted to teach this to Peter and the disciples, and also to us today. He is well aware that our faith is lacking and that our journey can be troubled, hindered by adverse forces. But he is the Risen One, the Lord who went through death in order to lead us to safety. Even before we begin to seek him, he is present beside us. And in lifting us back up after our falls, he helps us grow in faith.

오늘 제1독서의 엘리야 예언자에 관한 구절에서도 환기시키는 것과 같이 하느님께서는 강한 바람, 불, 지진도 아니십니다. 하느님께서는 가벼운 미풍으로서 절대로 부담을 주지 않으시고 단지 귀 기울여 주기를 원하십니다. (열왕기 1서 19,11-13 참조) 믿음을 갖는다는 것은 폭풍 속에서도 여러분의 마음을 하느님께, 하느님의 사랑에, 하느님의 부성적 부드러움에 고정시키는 것을 뜻합니다. 예수님께서는 이것을 베드로와 제자들 그리고 오늘날의 우리들에게도 가르치기를 원하셨습니다. 예수님께서는 우리의 믿음이 부족하고 우리의 여정이 불리한 세력으로 인해 어려움과 방해를 겪을 수 있음을 잘 알고 계십니다. 그러나 그분은 우리를 안전하게 인도하기 위해 죽음을 겪으신 주님, 부활하신 분이십니다. 우리가 그분을 찾기 시작하기 전에 이미 예수님께서 우리 곁에 계십니다. 그리고 우리가 넘어진 후에 우리를 다시 일으켜 주시며, 우리의 믿음이 자라도록 도와주십니다.

The boat at the mercy of the storm is the image of the Church, which in every age encounters contrary winds, at times very harsh trials: let us think of certain long and persistent persecutions of the last century. In those situations, she may have the temptation to think that God has abandoned her. But in reality it is precisely in those moments that the witness of faith, love and hope shines the most. It is the presence of the Risen Christ in his Church that gives the grace of witness unto martyrdom, from which sprout new Christians and fruits of reconciliation and peace for the entire world.

폭풍에 내맡겨진 배는 교회의 이미지입니다. 교회는 모든 시대에 역풍을, 때때로 매우 가혹한 시련을 겪습니다. 지난 세기의 길고 지속적인 박해를 생각해 봅시다. 그러한 상황에서 교회는  하느님께서 자신을 버리셨다고 생각하고 싶은 유혹을 느꼈을지 모릅니다. 그러나 실제로는 바로 그 순간에 믿음, 사랑, 희망의 증거가 가장 빛납니다. 그분의 교회에 부활하신 그리스도께서 현존하시고 순교에 증거의 은총을 주십니다. 그로부터 새로운 그리스도인들과 전 세계의 화해와 평화의 열매가 싹틉니다.

May the intercession of Mary Most Holy help us to persevere in faith and fraternal love when the darkness and storms of life set our trust in God into crisis.

삶의 어두움과 폭풍이 하느님께 대한 우리의 믿음을 위기로 몰아넣은 때 지극히 거룩하신 마리아여 중재하시어 우리가 믿음과 형제적 사랑 안에 버티어 내도록 도와주소서.
