Pope's Address Before the Angelus (May 17, 2020)
Dear Brothers and Sisters, good morning! This Sunday’s Gospel (Cf. John 14:15-21) presents two fundamental messages: the observance of the Commandments and the promise of the Holy Spirit.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 이번 주일의 복음에서 (요한복음 14,15-21 참조) 두 가지의 근본적인 메시지가 제시됩니다. 하나는 계명의 준수이고 또 하나는 성령에 대한 약속입니다.
Jesus links love for Him to the observance of the Commandments, and He insists on this in His farewell discourse: “If you love me, you will keep my Commandments” (v. 15); “He who has my Commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves Me (v. 21). Jesus asks us to love Him, but He explains: this love isn’t exhausted in a desire of Him, or in a sentiment, no. It requires willingness to follow His way, namely, the Will of the Father. And this is summarized in the Commandment of mutual love — the first love [in implementing it] –, given by Jesus Himself: “Love one another; even as I have loved you” (John 13:34). He didn’t say: “Love Me, as I have loved you,” but “love one another as I have loved you.” He loves us without asking us for reciprocation, and He wants His free love to become the concrete way of life among ourselves: this is His will.
예수님께서는 자신에 대한 사랑과 계명의 준수를 연결시키시고 이것을 자신의 송별사에서 주장하십니다. “너희가 나를 사랑하면 내 계명을 지킬 것이다.” (15절) “내 계명을 받아 지키는 이야말로 나를 사랑하는 사람이다. To help the disciples to follow this way, Jesus promises that He will pray to the Father to send “another Counselor” (v. 16), namely, a Consoler, a Defender that takes His place and gives them the intelligence to listen and the courage to observe His words. This is the Holy Spirit, Who is the gift of God’s love that descends into the heart of a Christian. After Jesus died and resurrected, His love is given to all those that believe in Him and are baptized in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit Himself guides them, illumines them <and> reinforces them, so that each one can walk in life, also through adversities and difficulties, in joys and in sorrows, remaining in Jesus’ way. This is possible in fact by keeping oneself docile to the Holy Spirit, so that, with His operating presence, He can not only console but transform hearts, open them to truth and love.
제자들이 이 길을 따르는 것을 돕기 위해서 예수님은 아버지께 청하여 “다른 보호자”를 (16절) 즉 예수님의 자리를 대신하여 제자들에게 자신의 말을 이해할 총명함과 자신의 말을 실천할 용기를 줄 위로자, 방어자를 보내실 것을 약속하십니다. 이분이 크리스천들의 마음에 내려오는 하느님 사랑의 선물인 성령이십니다. 예수님께서 죽으시고 부활하신 후에 예수님의 사랑은 그분을 믿는 모든 사람들 그리고 성부와 성자와 성령의 이름으로 세례를 받는 모든 사람들에게 주어집니다. 성령 자신이 그들을 이끄시고, 그들에게 빛을 비추시고, 그들에게 힘을 주시어, 그들 각자가 고난과 어려움을 뚫고, 기쁨과 슬픔을 겪으며, 예수님의 길을 따라서 삶의 길을 걸을 수 있도록 하십니다. 이것은 사실 우리 자신을 성령님의 이끄심에 맡기어 그분의 역사 안에서 그분이 위로하실 뿐만 아니라 우리의 마음을 변화시키시고 진리와 사랑에 개방시키시도록 함으로써 가능합니다.
In face of the experience of error and sin — which we all have –, the Holy Spirit helps us not to succumb and makes us receive and live fully the meaning of Jesus’ words: “If you love Me, observe my Commandments” (V. 15). The Commandments aren’t given to us as a sort of mirror, in which to see our miseries and inconsistency reflected. No, they aren’t so. The Word of God is given to us as Word of life, which transforms the heart, life, which renews, which doesn’t judge to condemn, but heals and has forgiveness as its end. God’s mercy is like that. A word that is light for our steps. And all this is the work of the Holy Spirit! He is the Gift of God, He is God Himself, who helps us to be free persons, persons who want and are able to love, persons that have understood that life is a mission to proclaim the wonders the Lord does in one who entrusts himself to Him.
잘못과 죄에 대한 체험 앞에서 - 우리 모두가 겪는 - 성령께서는 우리가 굴복하지 않도록 도우시고, 우리가 예수님 말씀을 온전히 받아들이고 살아가도록 해주십니다. “너희가 나를 사랑하면 내 계명을 지킬 것이다.” (15절) 계명은 우리의 고통과 모순이 비춰지는 일종의 거울로 우리에게 주어진 것이 아닙니다. 그렇지 않습니다. 하느님의 말씀은 삶의 말씀으로서 우리에게 주어진 것입니다. 하느님의 말씀은 마음과 삶을 변화시키고, 새롭게 하고, 처벌하기 위해 판단하지 않고, 치유하고, 용서합니다. 하느님의 자비도 그와 같습니다. 말씀은 우리의 발걸음을 비추는 빛입니다. 이 모든 것이 성령의 역사입니다. 성령께서는 하느님의 선물이십니다. 성령께서는 하느님 자신입니다. 우리가 자유로운 사람이 되도록 도우십니다. 사랑을 원하고 사랑할 수 있는 사람들, 삶은 주님께서 자신을 주님께 의탁하는 사람에게 하시는 신비들을 선포하는 사명이라는 것을 이해하는 사람들이 되도록 도우십니다.
May the Virgin Mary, model of the Church that knows how to listen to the Word of God and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, help us to live the Gospel with joy, in the awareness of being supported by the Spirit, divine fire that warms hearts and illuminates our steps.
하느님의 말씀을 어떻게 경청하는지 잘 아시고, 성령의 선물을 어떻게 받는지 잘 아시는 교회의 모범이신 동정마리아여 저희가 복음을 기쁘게 살 수 있도록 도와주소서. 그리고 우리가 마음을 따뜻하게 해주시고, 우리의 발걸음을 비추시는 하느님의 불이신 성령님의 지지를 받고 있다는 것을 인식할 수 있게 도와주소서.
