Pope's Address Before the Angelus (March 29, 2020)

Dear Brothers and Sisters, good morning! The Gospel of this Fifth Sunday of Lent is that of Lazarus’ resurrection (Cf. John 11:1-45). Lazarus was the brother of Martha and Mary; they were very good friends of Jesus. When He arrived at Bethany, Lazarus had been dead already for four days. Martha runs to meet the Master and says to Him: “If You had been here, my brother would not have died” (v. 21). Jesus answered her: “Your brother will rise again” (v. 23), and He added: “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live” (v. 25).

친애하는 형제자매 여러분 안녕하십니까? 오늘 사순 5주일의 복음은 라자로의 부활에 관한 내용입니다. (요한 11,1-45 참조) 라자로는 마르타와 마리아의 오빠입니다. 그들은 예수님의 아주 친한 친구들이었습니다. 예수님께서 베타니에 도착하셨을 때, 라자로는 이미 죽은지 나흘이 되었습니다. 마르타는 주님을 맞으러 뛰어와 예수님께 이렇게 말합니다. “주님, 주님께서 여기에 계셨더라면 제 오빠가 죽지 않았을 것입니다.” (21절) 예수님께서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “네 오빠는 다시 살아날 것이다.” (23절) 그리고 또 말씀하셨습니다. “나는 부활이요 생명이다. 나를 믿는 사람은 죽더라도 살 것이다.” (25절)

Jesus makes Himself seen as the Lord of life, He who is able to give life also to the dead. Then Mary and other people arrived, all weeping, and then Jesus — says the Gospel — was deeply moved and [. . . ] He wept” (vv. 33.35). With this trouble in his heart, He goes to the tomb, thanks the Father who always listens to Him, has the sepulcher opened and cries loudly: “Lazarus, come out” (v. 43). And Lazarus came out with “his hands and feet bound with bandages, and his face wrapped with a cloth” (v. 44).

예수님께서는 자신을 생명의 주님, 죽은 이에게도 생명을 줄 수 있는 분으로 드러내십니다. 그러자 마리아와 다른 사람들이 예수님께 왔고 그들은 모두 울었습니다. 예수님께서도 마음이 북받치시고 우셨습니다. (33 절, 35절 참조) 예수님께서는 속이 북받치시어 무덤으로 가십니다. 항상 그분의 말씀을 경청하시는 아버님께 감사드리며 무덤을 열게 하시고 크게 외치십니다.  “라자로야, 이리 나와라.” (43 절) 그러자 라자로가 “손과 발은 천으로 감기고 얼굴은 수건으로 감싸인 채” (44절) 나왔습니다.

Here we see with our own eyes that God is life and gives life, but He takes charge of the drama of death. Jesus would have been able to avoid the death of his friend Lazarus, but He wished to make our grief His own for the death of dear persons, and He wished especially to show God’s dominion over death. In this passage of the Gospel, we see that man’s faith and the omnipotence of God’s love seek one another and finally meet. We see it in the cry of Martha and Mary and of all of us with them: “If you had been here!… “

여기에서 우리의 눈으로 하느님께서 생명이시고 생명을 주시는 것을 봅니다. 그분께서는 죽음의 드라마를 책임지십니다. 예수님께서는 친구인 라자로의 죽음을 피할 수 있으셨지만, 사랑하는 사람의 죽음에 대한 우리의 슬픔을 자신의 슬픔으로 만들기 원하셨고, 특별히 죽음에 대한 하느님의 지배를 보여주고 싶으셨습니다. 복음의 이 구절에서 우리는 인간의 믿음과 전능하신 하느님의 사랑이 서로를 추구하고 결국에 만나는 것을 봅니다. 우리는 마르타와 마리아 그리고 우리 모두 그들과 함께 하는 울음에서 그것을 봅니다. “주님, 주님께서 여기에 계셨더라면 제 오빠가 죽지 않았을 것입니다.”

And God’s answer isn’t a speech, no, Jesus is God’s answer to the problem of death: “I Am the resurrection and the life . . . Have faith! In the midst of weeping, continue to have faith, even if it seems that death won. Take away the stone from your heart! Let the Word of God bring life where there is death.”

그리고 하느님의 답변은 설교가 아닙니다. 예수님께서 죽음 문제에 대한 답변이십니다. “나는 부활이요 생명이다..... 믿음을 가져라. 울음 중에도 지속적으로 믿음을 가져라. 죽음이 이긴 것 같을지라도 믿음을 가져라. 너의 가슴의 돌을 치워라. 하느님의 말씀이 죽음이 있는 곳에 생명을 가져오도록 하여라.”

Today too, Jesus repeats: “Take away the stone.” God hasn’t created us for the tomb; He has created us for a beautiful, good and joyful. “But through the devil’s envy death entered the world” (Wisdom 2:24), says the Book of Wisdom, and Jesus Christ came to free us from his snares. So, we are called to take away the stones of all that has to do with death: for instance, the hypocrisy with which the faith is lived, is death; destructive criticism of others, is death; offense <and> slander, is death; the marginalization of the poor, is death.

오늘도 역시 예수님께서 반복하십니다. “돌을 치워라.” 하느님께서 우리를 무덤에 가도록 창조하지 않으셨습니다. 하느님께서 우리를 아름답고 선하고 기쁘게 창조하셨습니다. “그러나 악마의 시기로 세상에 죽음이 들어왔다.” (지혜 2,24) 라고 지혜서가 말합니다. 그래서 예수님께서 악마의 올가미에서 우리를 구하려고 오셨습니다. 우리는 죽음과 관련된 모든 것에서 돌을 치우도록 부르심을 받습니다. 예를 들어 믿음과 함께 사는 위선..은 죽음이며, 다른 사람들에 대한 파괴적인 비판..은 죽음이며, 공격과 험담...은 죽음이며, 가난한 사람들을 소외시키는 것...은 죽음입니다.

The Lord asks us to take away these stones from our heart and then life will flourish again around us. Christ lives and he who receives Him and adheres to him enters into contact with life. Without Christ, or outside of Christ, not only is life not present but one falls into death.

주님께서 우리에게 우리의 가슴에서 이런 돌들을 치우라고 청하십니다. 그러면 생명이 우리 주위에 꽃을 피울 것입니다. 그리스도께서는 살아계십니다. 그분을 받아들이고 그분께 의지하는 사람은 생명과의 접촉에 들어갑니다. 그리스도 없이, 그리스도 밖에는 생명이 없을 뿐만 아니라 죽음으로 떨어집니다. 

Lazarus’ resurrection is also a sign of the regeneration that is brought about in the believer through Baptism, with a full insertion in Christ’s Paschal Mystery. By the action and strength of the Holy Spirit, a Christian is a person that walks in life as a new creature: a creature for life and that goes to life.

라자로의 부활은 또한 세례를 통하여, 그리고 그리스도의 파스칼 신비 안으로 온전히 들어감으로써 믿는 이들에게 일어나는 재생의 표시입니다. 성령의 역사와 힘으로 크리스천은 새로운 피조물로서 생명 안에 걷은 사람입니다. 생명을 위한 피조물이며 생명을 향해 걸어가는 피조물입니다.

May the Virgin Mary help us to be compassionate as Her Son Jesus, who made our grief His own. May each one of us be close to those being tested, becoming for them a reflection of God’s love and tenderness, which frees from death and makes life win.

동정 마리아여 저희를 도우셔서, 우리의 슬픔을 자신의 것으로 만드신 아드님, 예수님처럼 저희도 연민의 정을 갖게 하소서. 우리 각자가 시험에 든 사람들에게 가까이 가서, 그들에게 하느님 사랑과 따뜻함을 반사하는 거울이 되게 하소서. 그분의 사랑과 부드러움은 죽음에서 해방시키고 생명이 이기도록 하십니다.
