POPE LEO XIV, ANGELUS, Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, St Peter's Square, 8 February 2026

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! After proclaiming the Beatitudes, Jesus addresses those who put them into practice, saying that thanks to them the earth is no longer the same and the world is no longer in darkness. “You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world” (Mt 5:13-14). Indeed, it is genuine joy that gives flavor to life and brings to light something that was not there before. This joy springs from a way of life, a way of inhabiting the earth and of living together that must be desired and chosen. It is the life that shines in Jesus, the new flavor of his words and deeds. After encountering Jesus in his poverty of spirit, his meekness and simplicity of heart, his hunger and thirst for justice, which unlocks mercy and peace as powers of transformation and reconciliation, those who would distance themselves from all this seem bland and dull.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 행복한 주일입니다! 예수님께서는 참 행복을 선포하신 후, 그것을 실천하는 사람들에게, 그들 덕분에 세상이 더 이상 예전과 같지 않고 세상이 더 이상 어둠 속에 있지 않다고 말씀하십니다. “너희는 세상의 소금이다.... 너희는 세상의 빛이다.” (마태오 5,13-14) 참으로, 삶에 풍미를 더하고 전에 없던 것을 환히 밝히는 것은 진정한 기쁨이 아닐 수 없습니다. 이 기쁨은 우리가 갈망하고 선택해야 할 삶의 방식, 이 땅에 사는 방식, 함께 사는 방식에서 솟아납니다. 그것은 예수님 안에서 빛나는 생명이며 그분의 말씀과 행동에서 풍기는 새로운 풍미입니다. 예수님을 만난 후에, 그분의 영적인 가난, 그분의 마음의 온유함과 단순함, 그리고 자비와 평화를 변화와 화해의 힘으로 발동시키는 그분의 정의에 대한 갈증 중 어느 하나라도 멀리하는 것은 싱겁고 밋밋한 것 같습니다.

The prophet Isaiah lists concrete gestures that overcome injustice: sharing bread with the hungry, bringing the poor and homeless into our homes, clothing those we see to be naked, without neglecting our neighbors and those in our own homes (cf. 58:7). The prophet continues, “then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily” (v. 8). On the one hand, there is light which cannot be hidden because it is as great as the sun that drives away the darkness every morning; on the other hand, there is a wound that was once burning and is now healing.

이사야 예언자는 불의를 극복하는 구체적인 행동을 나열합니다. 양식을 굶주린 이와 함께 나누고, 가련하게 떠도는 이들을 네 집에 맞아들이고, 헐벗은 사람을 보면 덮어 주고, 네 혈육을 피하여 숨지 않는 것 등입니다. (이사야 58,7 참조) 예언자는 이어서 말합니다. “그리하면 너의 빛이 새벽빛처럼 터져 나오고 너의 상처가 곧바로 아물리라.” (58,8) 한편으로 매일 아침 어둠을 몰아내는 태양처럼 밝아서 감출 수 없는 빛이 있고, 다른 한편으로 한때 타들러갔지만 지금 아물고 있는 상처가 있습니다.

Indeed, it is painful to lose flavor and give up joy; yet it is possible to have this wound in one’s heart. Jesus seems to warn those who listen to him not to give up joy. Salt that has lost its flavor, he says, “is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot” (Mt 5:13). How many people — perhaps we ourselves — feel like they are worthless or broken. It is as if their light has been hidden. Jesus, however, proclaims a God who will never throw us away, a Father who cares for our names and our uniqueness. Every wound, even the deepest, will be healed by welcoming the word of the Beatitudes and setting us back on the path of the Gospel.

사실 맛을 잃고 기쁨을 포기하는 것은 고통스럽습니다. 하지만 마음속에 이 상처를 안고 살아갈 수 있습니다. 예수님께서 경청하는 사람들에게 기쁨을 포기하지 말라고 경고하시는 듯합니다. 예수님께서 맛을 잃은 소금은 “아무 쓸모가 없으니 밖에 버려져 사람들에게 짓밟힐 따름이다.” (마태오 5,13) 라고 말씀하십니다. 얼마나 많은 사람들이 -  어쩌면 우리 자신도 _ 자신이 무가치하거나 망가졌다고 느낄까요? 그것은 마치 자신의 빛이 감추어진 것과 같습니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 우리를 결코 버리지 않으시는 하느님, 우리의 이름과 고유함을 돌보시는 아버지 하느님을 선포하십니다. 모든 상처는, 아무리 정도가 심하더라도, 참 행복을 받아들이고 복음의 길로 되돌아감으로써 치유될 것입니다.

Moreover, deeds of openness and attention to others will rekindle joy. At the same time, however, through their simplicity such gestures put us at odds with the world. Jesus himself was tempted in the desert to follow other paths, to assert his identity, to laud it and have the world at his feet. Yet he rejected the paths that would have caused him to lose his true flavor, the one we find every Sunday in the Bread that is broken, which is a life given and a silent love.

더욱이, 타인에 대한 열린 마음과 배려하는 행동은 기쁨을 되살릴 것입니다. 하지만, 동시에, 그러한 행동은 단순성 때문에 우리를 세상과 대립하게 만듭니다. 예수님께서도 광야에서 다른 길을 따르는 즉 자신의 정체성을 주장하고 찬양하고 세상을 발아래에 두는 유혹을 받으셨습니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 자신의 진정한 맛, 매주일 쪼개지는 빵에서 발견하는 그 맛, 내어 주시는 생명, 조용한 사랑을 잃게 할 그 길을 거부하셨습니다.

Brothers and sisters, let us be nourished and enlightened by communion with Jesus. Without any boasting, we will then be like a city set on a hill, not simply visible, but also inviting and welcoming: the city of God where everyone, deep down, desires to live and find peace. Let us now turn our gaze and our prayers to Mary, the Gate of Heaven, that she may help us to become and remain disciples of her Son.

형제자매 여러분, 예수님과의 친교를 통해 영양과 깨달음을 얻읍시다. 그러면 우리는, 자랑하지 않고, 산 위에 세워진 도시, 눈에 띌 뿐만 아니라 사람들을 초대하고 환영하는, 도시처럼 될 것입니다. 모든 사람들이 마음속깊이 그곳에서 살고 싶어 하고, 평화를 찾고 싶어 하는 하느님의 도시같이 될 것입니다. 이제 우리의 시선과 기도를 하늘의 문이신 성모마리아께 향하여 성모님께서 우리가 그분 아드님의 제자가 되고 제자로 남을 수 있게 도와주시기를 간구합시다.

Dear brothers and sisters, Yesterday in Huércal-Overa, Spain, Father Salvatore Valera Parra was beatified. He was a parish priest completely devoted to his people, humble and generous in pastoral charity. His priestly example of focusing on what is essential can inspire today’s priests to be faithful in living each day with simplicity and asceticism.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 어제 스페인 우에르칼-오베라에서 살바토레 발레라 파라 신부님이 시복되셨습니다. 그는 자신의 신자들에게 온전히 헌신한 본당 신부였으며, 겸손하고 관대한 사목적 사랑을 베푸셨습니다. 본질에 집중하는 그의 사제적 모범은 오늘날의 사제들이 매일을 소박하고 금욕적인 삶으로 살아가는 데 영감을 줄 수 있습니다.

It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life. I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism. I likewise hope that the competent Authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen.

최근 나이지리아 여러 지역에서 발생한 공격으로 많은 인명 피해가 발생했다는 소식을 접하고 깊은 슬픔과 우려를 금할 수 없습니다. 이번 폭력과 테러의 희생자 여러분께 진심으로 위로의 말씀을 드리며, 관련 당국이 모든 시민의 안전과 보호를 위해 더욱 확고한 의지를 갖고 노력해 줄 것을 당부 드립니다.

Today, the memorial of Saint Josephine Bakhita, we celebrate the World Day of Prayer and Reflection Against Human Trafficking. I thank the religious and all those who are committed to combating and eliminating current forms of slavery. Together with them, I say: peace begins with dignity!

오늘은 성녀 요세핀 바키타 기념일이자 인신매매 반대를 위한 세계 기도와 묵상의 날입니다. 저는 현존하는 노예제도를 근절하기 위해 헌신하시는 수도자와 모든 분들께 감사드립니다. 저는 그분들과 함께 이렇게 말합니다. 평화는 인간 존엄에서 시작됩니다!

I offer the assurance of my prayers to the people of Portugal, Morocco, Spain — especially Grazalema in Andalusia — and southern Italy, particularly Niscemi in Sicily, who have been affected by floods and landslides. I encourage the communities to remain united and supportive, with the maternal protection of the Virgin Mary.

I also greet the young people connected to us from three oratories in the Diocese of Brescia.

Let us continue to pray for peace. History teaches us that strategies of economic and military power do not give humanity a future. The future lies in respect and fraternity among peoples.

평화를 위해 계속 기도합시다. 역사는 우리에게 경제력과 군사력을 앞세운 전략이 인류에게 미래를 가져다주지 못한다는 것을 가르쳐줍니다. 미래는 사람들 사이의 존중과 형제애 안에 존재합니다.
