POPE LEO XIV, ANGELUS, 3rd Sunday of Advent, St Peter's Square, 14 December 2025
Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! Today’s Gospel places in jail with John the Baptist, who finds himself imprisoned because of his preaching (cf. Mt 14:3-5). Nevertheless, he does not lose hope, thus becoming for us a sign that a prophet, even in chains, retains the ability to use his voice in the pursuit of truth and justice.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 복된 주일입니다! 오늘 복음은 우리를 그의 설교 때문에 감옥에 갇힌 세례 요한에게 데려갑니다. (마태복음 14:3-5 참조) 투옥에도 불구하고 요한은 희망을 잃지 않습니다. 그렇게 함으로써 우리에게 예언자는 감옥에 갇혀서도 진리와 정의를 추구하는 목소리를 낼 수 있다는 본보기가 됩니다.
From prison, John the Baptist hears “about the works of Christ” (Mt 11:2), which are different from what he expected, so he sends his disciples to ask him: “Are you the one who is to come, or should we wait for another?” (v. 3). Those who seek truth and justice, those who long for freedom and peace, have questions about Jesus: Is he truly the Messiah, the Savior promised by God through the prophets?
감옥에 갇힌 세례 요한은 “그리스도께서 하신 일을” (마태복음 11:2) 전해 듣는데 이는 그가 예상했던 것과 달라서 제자들을 보내어 예수님께 여쭙게 합니다. “오실 분이 선생님이십니까? 아니면 저희가 다른 분을 기다려야 합니까?” (3절) 진리와 정의를 추구하는 사람들, 자유와 평화를 갈망하는 사람들은 예수님에 관해 다음과 같은 질문을 합니다. 그가 진정 메시아인가, 예언자들을 통해 하느님께서 약속하신 구원자인가?
Jesus responds by directing our gaze toward those whom he loved and served. It is: the least, the poor, the sick who speak on his behalf. Christ announces who he is by what he does. And what he does is a sign of salvation for all of us. In fact, by encountering Jesus – lives previously deprived of light, speech and taste regain meaning – the blind see, the mute speak, the deaf hear. The image of God, seemingly disfigured by leprosy, regains wholeness and vitality. Even the dead, who are completely lifeless, come back to life (cf. v. 5). This is the Gospel of Jesus, the good news proclaimed to the poor. Thus, when God comes into the world, it is clearly seen!
예수님께서 답변을 통해 그분께서 사랑하시고 섬기는 이들에게 우리의 시선을 돌리게 하십니다. 그들은 가장 보잘 것 없는 이들, 가난한 이들, 병든 이들이고 그들이 예수님을 대신해서 말합니다. 그리스도께서는 자신의 행위로 자신이 누구인지 선언하십니다. 그리고 그분의 행하심은 우리 모두를 위한 구원의 표징입니다. 사실 예수님을 만남으로써 이전에 빛, 말, 그리고 맛을 잃었던 삶이 의미를 되찾습니다. 맹인은 보게 되고, 벙어리는 말하게 되고, 귀머거리는 듣게 됩니다. 나병으로 일그러져 보이는 하느님의 형상이 온전함과 활력을 되찾습니다. 완전한 무 생명으로 보이는 죽은 이들조차도 생명으로 돌아옵니다. (5절 참조) 이것이 바로 예수님의 복음, 가난한 이들에게 선포된 기쁜 소식입니다. 이렇게 하느님께서 세상에 오실 때 그것이 뚜렷이 보입니다.
The words of Jesus free us from the prison of despair and suffering. Every prophecy finds its expected fulfillment in Him. It is Christ who opens the eyes of man to the glory of God. He gives voice to the oppressed and to those whose voices have been silenced by violence and hatred. He defeats ideologies that make us deaf to the truth. He heals the ailments that deform the body.
예수님의 말씀은 우리를 절망과 고통의 감옥에서 해방시켜 줍니다. 모든 예언이 그분 안에서 그대로 이루어집니다. 사람들의 눈을 하느님의 영광을 볼 수 있도록 여시는 분이 그리스도이십니다. 그분께서는 억압받은 이들에게, 그리고 폭력과 증오로 목소리를 잃은 이들에게 목소리를 돌려주십니다. 우리를 진리에 귀머거리가 되게 만든 이념을 그리스도께서 무찌르십니다.
우리의 육체를 망가뜨리는 질병들을 예수님께서 치유해주십니다.
In this way, the Word of life redeems us from evil, which causes the heart to die. For this reason, in this Advent season, as disciples of the Lord, we are called to combine our anticipation of the Savior with attention to what God is doing in the world. Then we will be able to experience the joy of freedom in encountering our Savior: “Gaudete in Domino semper – Rejoice in the Lord always” (Phil 4:4). This invitation introduces today’s Holy Mass, the third Sunday of Advent, called Gaudete Sunday. Let us rejoice, since Jesus is our hope, especially in times of trial, when life seems to lose meaning and everything appears darker, words fail us, and we struggle to understand others.
이처럼 생명의 말씀은 마음을 죽게 하는 악으로부터 우리를 구원하십니다. 그러므로 이 대림절 기간 동안 주님의 제자인 우리는 구세주를 기다리는 것과 하느님께서 세상에서 행하시는 일에 관심을 기울이는 것을 함께 하도록 부르심을 받습니다. 그렇게 할 때 우리는 구세주를 만나는 자유의 기쁨을 체험할 수 있습니다. “Gaudete in Domino semper – 주님 안에서 늘 기뻐하십시오.” (필리피 4,4) 이 초대는 기쁨 주일로 불리는 오늘 대림 제3주일 미사의 입당송입니다. 예수님께서, 특히 시련의 시기에, 삶의 의미를 잃고 모든 것이 어둡게 보이며, 말이 막히고, 다른 사람들을 이해하기 어려울 때에도, 우리의 희망이시므로 기뻐합시다.
May the Virgin Mary, model of expectant hope, attentiveness, and joy, help us to imitate the work of her Son by sharing bread and the Gospel with the poor.
희망, 주의력, 그리고 기쁨의 모범이신 동정 성모 마리아여, 저희를 도우셔서 저희가 당신 아드님께서 하신 일을 따라, 빵과 복음을 가난한 이들과 나누게 하소서!
After the Angelus:
Dear brothers and sisters! Yesterday in Jaén, Spain, Father Emanuele Izquierdo and fifty-eight companions were beatified, together with Father Antonio Montañés Chiquero and sixty-four companions. All of them were killed in hatred of the faith during the religious persecution from 1936-38. Also yesterday Raymond Cayré, priest, Gérard-Martin Cendrier, of the Order of Friars Minor, Roger Vallé, seminarian, Jean Mestre, layman, and forty-six companions were beatified in Paris. They were killed in hatred of the faith in 1944-45 during the Nazi occupation. Let us praise the Lord for these martyrs, courageous witnesses to the Gospel, persecuted and killed for remaining close to their people and faithful to the Church!

I am following with deep concern the resumption of fighting in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. While expressing my closeness to the people, I urge the parties in the conflict to cease all forms of violence and to seek constructive dialogue, respecting the ongoing peace process.
콩고민주공화국 동부 지역에서 전투가 재개된 것에 대해 깊은 우려를 표합니다. 저는 해당 지역 주민들과 함께하며, 분쟁 당사자들이 모든 형태의 폭력을 중단하고 진행 중인 평화 프로세스를 존중하는 건설적인 대화에 나설 것을 촉구합니다.
