POPE LEO XIV, ANGELUS, Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, St Peter's Square, 1st February 2026
Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! Today’s liturgy proclaims a beautiful passage from the Good News that Jesus announces to all humanity: the Gospel of the Beatitudes (Mt 5:1-12). These are, in fact, lights that the Lord kindles in the darkness of history, revealing the plan of salvation that the Father accomplishes through the Son, with the power of the Holy Spirit.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 복된 주일입니다! 오늘 전례는 예수님께서 온 인류에게 전하시는 기쁜 소식, 즉 참 행복 복음 (마태복음 5,1-12) 의 아름다운 구절을 선포합니다. 이 참 행복은 구원계획을 드러내시며 주님께서 역사의 어둠을 밝히시는 빛입니다. 그 구원계획은 성부께서 성자를 통해 성령의 힘으로 완성하십니다.
On the mountain, Christ gives his disciples the new law, no longer written on stone. It is a law that renews our lives and makes them good, even when the world seems to have failed us and is full of misery. Only God can truly call the poor and afflicted blessed (cf. vv. 3-4), because he is the highest good who gives himself to all with infinite love. Only God can satisfy those who seek peace and justice (cf. vv. 6.9), because he is the just judge of the world and the author of eternal peace. Only in God do the meek, the merciful and the pure of heart find joy (vv. 5.7-8), because he is the fulfilment of their expectations. In persecution, God is the source of redemption; in falsehood, he is the anchor of truth. Therefore, Jesus proclaims: “Rejoice and be glad!” (v. 12).
산 위에서 그리스도께서 제자들에게 더 이상 돌 판에 새겨진 율법이 아닌 새로운 율법을 주십니다. 이 율법은 세상이 우리를 실망시키고 고통으로 가득 찬 것처럼 보이는 때조차도 우리의 삶을 새롭게 하고 행복하게 합니다. 오직 하느님께서만 가난하고 고통 받는 사람들을 참으로 복되다고 말씀하실 수 있습니다. These Beatitudes remain a paradox only for those who believe that God is other than how Christ reveals him. Those who expect the arrogant to always rule the earth are surprised by the Lord’s words. Those who are accustomed to thinking that happiness belongs to the rich may believe that Jesus is deluded. However, the delusion lies precisely in the lack of faith in Christ. He is the poor man who shares his life with everyone, the meek man who perseveres in suffering, the peacemaker persecuted to death on the cross.
이 참 행복은 하느님은 그리스도께서 자신을 드러내신 그런 하느님이 아니라고 믿는 사람들에게는 역설로 남습니다. 교만한 사람들이 항상 세계를 지배할 것으로 예상하는 사람들은 주님의 말씀을 듣고 놀랍니다. 행복은 부자들의 것이라고 생각하는 데 익숙한 사람들은 예수님을 환상으로 여길지 모릅니다. 그러나 그 환상은 정확히 그리스도에 대한 믿음의 부족에서 비롯됩니다. 예수님께서는 모든 사람들과 삶을 나누시는 가난한 분이시며, 고통을 견디시는 온유한 분이시며, 십자가에 처형되신 평화를 이루시는 분이십니다.
In this way, Jesus illuminates the meaning of history. It is no longer written by conquerors, but rather by God, who is able to accomplish it by saving the oppressed. The Son looks at the world through the Father’s love. On the other hand, as Pope Francis said, there are “the experts in illusion. We should not follow them because they are unable to give us hope” (Angelus, 17 February 2019). Instead, God gives this hope primarily to those whom the world dismisses as hopeless.
이처럼 예수님께서 역사의 의미를 분명히 밝히십니다. 역사는 더 이상 정복자에 의해 쓰여지지 않고, 억압 받는 사람들을 구원함으로써 역사를 완성하시는 하느님께서 쓰십니다. 성자께서 성부의 사랑을 통해 세상을 바라보십니다. 반면에 프란치스코 교황님이 말씀하셨듯이 “환상의 전문가들이 있는데, 우리는 그들을 따르면 안 됩니다. 그들은 희망을 줄 수 없기 때문입니다.” (삼종기도, 2019년 2월 17일) 그러나 하느님께서는 이 희망을 주로 세상에서 절망적이라고 내쳐진 사람들에게 주십니다.
Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, the Beatitudes become for us a measure of happiness, leading us to ask whether we consider it an achievement to be bought or a gift to be shared; whether we place it in objects that are consumed or in relationships that accompany us. It is in fact because of Christ (cf. Mt 5:11) and thanks to him that the bitterness of trials is transformed into the joy of the redeemed. Jesus does not speak of a distant consolation, but of a constant grace that always sustains us, especially in times of affliction.
그러므로 사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 참 행복은 우리에게 행복의 척도가 되어, 다음과 같은 질문을 하게 합니다. 우리는 행복을 돈으로 살 수 있는 성취로 여기는지, 아니면 나누어야 할 선물로 여기는지? 우리는 행복을 소비하는 물건에 두는지, 아니면 우리를 동반하는 관계성에 두는지? 사실, 그리스도 때문에 (마태오 5,11 참조) 그리고 그리스도 덕분에 고난의 고통이 구원받은 사람의 기쁨으로 바뀝니다. 예수님께서 말씀하시는 것은 멀리서의 위로가 아니라 우리를 항상 지탱해주는 변함없는 은총, 특히 고난의 때에 우리를 지탱해주는 은총입니다.
The Beatitudes lift up the humble and disperse the proud in their inmost thoughts (cf Lk 1:51). Therefore, we ask for the intercession of the Virgin Mary, servant of the Lord, whom all generations call blessed.

Dear brothers and sisters, I have received the greatly troubling news regarding an increase in tensions between Cuba and the United States of America, two neighboring countries. I echo the message of the Cuban bishops, inviting all responsible parties to promote a sincere and effective dialogue, in order to avoid violence and every action that could increase the suffering of the dear Cuban people. May the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre assist and protect all of the children of that beloved land!

Next Friday, the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games will begin, followed by the Paralympic Games. I extend my best wishes to the organizers and all the athletes. These great sporting events send a powerful message of fraternity and rekindle hope for a world at peace. This is also the meaning of the Olympic truce, an ancient custom that accompanies the Games. I hope that all those who care about peace among peoples and are in positions of authority will take this opportunity to make concrete gestures of détente and dialogue.
다음 주 금요일, 밀라노-코르티나 동계 올림픽이 개막하고, 이어서 패럴림픽이 개최됩니다. 조직위원회와 모든 선수들에게 행운을 빕니다. 이러한 위대한 스포츠 행사는 형제애의 강력한 메시지를 전달하고 평화로운 세계에 대한 희망을 다시금 불러일으킵니다. 이는 올림픽 휴전이라는 오랜 전통이 지닌 의미이기도 합니다. 저는 민족 간 평화를 중요하게 생각하고 권위 있는 위치에 있는 모든 분들이 이 기회를 통해 구체적인 화해와 대화의 제스처를 보여주시기를 바랍니다.
Today in Italy is the “National Day for Civilian Victims of War and Conflict around the World.” Unfortunately this initiative is still tragically relevant. Every day there are more civilian victims of armed actions, actions that openly violate morality and the law. The dead and wounded of yesterday and today will truly be honored when this intolerable injustice comes to an end.
오늘은 이탈리아에서 "전 세계 전쟁 및 분쟁 민간인 희생자 추모일"입니다. 안타깝게도 이 기념일은 여전히 비극적인 의미를 지니고 있습니다. 매일같이 무력 충돌로 인한 민간인 희생자가 늘어나고 있으며, 이러한 행위는 도덕과 법을 공공연히 위반하는 것입니다. 어제와 오늘 희생된 이들의 영혼이 진정으로 기려지는 날은 바로 이 용납할 수 없는 불의가 종식되는 날일 것입니다.
I assure you of my prayers for the dead and for those who are suffering as a result of the storms that have struck Portugal and southern Italy in recent days. Let us also not forget the people of Mozambique who have been severely affected by flooding.

I greet the groups of faithful from Paraná in Argentina, from Chojnice, Warsaw, Wrocław, and Wagrowiec in Poland, from Pula and Sinj in Croatia, from Guatemala City and San Salvador, as well as the students from the Rodríguez Moñino Institute in Badajoz and those from Cuenca, Spain. I also greet the devotees of Our Lady of Miracles of Corbetta, near Milan.
