POPE FRANCIS ANGELUS, Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, Saint Peter's Square, Sunday, 2 February 2025

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! Today the Gospel of the liturgy (Lk 2:22-40) tells us about Mary and Joseph who take the infant Jesus to the Temple of Jerusalem. In accordance with the Law, they present Him in God’s dwelling, to recall that life comes from the Lord. And while the Holy Family carries out what was always done among the people of Israel, from generation to generation, something happens that had never occurred before.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 복된 주일입니다! 오늘 전례 복음(루카 2,22-40)은 마리아와 요셉이 아기 예수를 예루살렘 성전으로 데려가는 이야기를 들려줍니다. 그들은 율법에 따라 생명이 주님으로부터 온다는 것을 상기하며 아기 예수를 하느님의 성전에 봉헌합니다. 그리고 성가족이 이스라엘 백성 가운데 대대로 이어져 항상 행해지던 일을 하는 중에 이전에 절대로 일어나지 않았던 일이 일어납니다.

Two elders, Simeon and Anna, prophesy about Jesus: they both praise God and talk about the child “to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem” (v. 38). Their heartfelt voices resound among the ancient stones of the Temple, announcing the fulfilment of Israel’s expectations. Truly God is present in the midst of His people: not because He dwells within the four walls, but because He lives as a man among men. And this is the novelty of Jesus. In Simeon and Anna’s old age, the novelty takes place that changes the history of the world.

두 사람의 연로한 시메온과 한나는 예수님에 관한 예언을 합니다. 두 사람 모두 하느님을 찬양하고, “예루살렘의 구원을 기다리고 있던 모든 사람들에게” (38절) 그 아기에 대해 얘기합니다. 그들의 진심 어린 목소리는 성전의 오래된 돌들 사이에서 울려 퍼지며 이스라엘의 기대가 이루어졌음을 알립니다. 참으로 하느님께서는 그분의 백성 가운데에 현존하십니다. 그분께서 네 벽 안에 머무르시기 때문이 아니라 사람들 가운데에 한 사람으로 사시기 때문입니다. 이것이 예수님의 참신함입니다. 시메온과 한나의 늙은 나이에 세상의 역사를 바꾸는 참신함이 일어납니다.

For their part, Mary and Joseph were amazed at what they heard (cf. v. 33). Indeed, when Simeon holds the child in his arms, he calls him in three beautiful ways, which are worthy of reflection. Three ways, three names that he gives Him. Jesus is salvation, Jesus is light; Jesus is a sign of contradiction.

한편 마리아와 요셉은 아기를 두고 하는 말에 놀라워하였습니다. (33절 참조) 사실 시메온은 아기를 팔에 안고 아기를 세 가지의 아름다운 방식으로 부르는데 이는 숙고할만한 가치가 있습니다. 세 가지 방식, 그가 예수님께 준 세 가지 이름은, 예수님께서는 구원이시고, 예수님께서는 빛이시고, 예수님께서는 반대를 받는 표징이시다 입니다.

First of all, Jesus is salvation. Simeon says, praying to God, “my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples” (vv. 30-31). This always leaves us astounded: universal salvation concentrated in just one! Yes, because in Jesus dwells the fullness of God, of His Love (cf. Col 2:9).

첫째, 예수님께서는 구원이십니다. 시메온은 하느님께 기도하면서 “제 눈이 당신의 구원을 본 것입니다. 이는 당신께서 모든 민족들 앞에서 마련하신 것입니다.” (30-31장) 라고 말합니다. 이것은 항상 우리를 놀라게 합니다. 보편적 구원이 단 한 분에게만 집중되어 있기 때문입니다. 그렇습니다. 온전히 충만한 신성이. 하느님의 사랑이 육신의 형태로 그리스도 안에 머무르고 있기 때문입니다. (골로새 2,9 참조)

Second aspect: Jesus is “a light for revelation to the Gentiles” (v. 32). Like the sun that rises over the world, this child will redeem it from the darkness of evil, pain and death. How much we need light, this light, even today!

두 번째 측면: 예수님께서는 “다른 민족들에게는 계시의 빛이십니다.” (32절) 세상 위로 떠오르는 태양처럼, 이 아이는 세상을 악, 고통, 죽음의 어둠에서 구원할 것입니다. 우리에게 얼마나 많은 빛이 오늘도 필요한가요.

Finally, the child embraced by Simeon is a sign of contradiction, “so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed” (v. 35). Jesus reveals the criterion for judging the whole of history and its drama, and also the life of each one of us. And what is this criterion? It is love: those who love, live; those who hate, die.

마지막으로, 시메온의 품에 안긴 아이는 반대를 받는 표징입니다. 그래서 “많은 사람의 마음속 생각이 드러날 것입니다.” (35절) 예수님께서는 역사 전체와, 그 드라마, 그리고 또한 우리 각자의 삶을 판단하는 기준을 드러내십니다. 그러면 이 기준은 무엇일까요? 그것은 사랑입니다. 사랑하는 사람들은 살고 미워하는 사람들은 죽습니다.

Jesus is salvation, Jesus is light, and Jesus is the sign of contradiction.

예수님은 구원이시며, 예수님은 빛이시며, 예수님은 반대를 받는 표징이십니다.

Enlightened by this encounter with Jesus, we can then ask ourselves: what do I expect in my life? What is my great hope? Does my heart wish to see the face of the Lord? Do I await the manifestation of His plan of salvation for humanity?

예수님과의 이 만남으로 깨달음을 얻은 우리는 스스로에게 이렇게 질문할 수 있습니다. 나는 내 삶에서 무엇을 기대하는가? 나의 큰 소망은 무엇인가? 내 마음은 주님의 얼굴을 보고 싶어 하는가? 나는 인류를 위한 그분의 구원 계획의 징후를 기다리는가?

Let us pray together to Mary, mother most pure, that she may accompany us through the lights and shadows of history, that she may always accompany us to the encounter with the Lord.

우리 모두 가장 순결하신 어머니 마리아께 기도합시다. 성모 마리아께서 우리를 항상 동행하시어 역사의 빛과 그림자를 통과하고 주님과의 만남에 이르게 하소서!

After the Angelus
Dear brothers and sisters! Today in Italy we celebrate the Day for Life, on the theme “Transmitting life, hope for the world”. I join with the Italian bishops in expressing gratitude to the many families who eagerly welcome the gift of life and in encouraging young couples not to be afraid of bringing children into the world. And I greet the Italian Movement for Life, which is fifty years old. Best wishes!

삼종기도 후에
사랑하는 형제자매 여러분! 오늘 이탈리아에서 우리는 "생명을 전하고, 세상을 위한 희망"이라는 주제로 생명의 날을 기념합니다. 저는 이탈리아 주교들과 함께 생명의 선물을 진심으로  환영하는 많은 가정에 감사를 표하고, 젊은 부부들에게 아이를 낳는 것을 두려워하지 말라고 격려합니다. 그리고 50주년을 맞는 이탈리아 생명 운동을 축하드립니다.

Tomorrow in the Vatican the international Summit on children’s rights will be held, entitled “Love them and protect them”, which I have had the joy of promoting and in which I will take part. It is a unique opportunity to bring the most pressing questions regarding the life of the little ones to the centre of the world’s attention. I invite you to join in prayer for its success.

내일 바티칸에서 "사랑하고 보호하라"라는 제목의 아동 권리에 대한 국제 정상회담이 열릴 예정이며, 저는 이 정상회담을 기쁜 마음으로 홍보하였고, 이 정상회담에 참여할 것입니다. 이는 어린이들의 삶에 대한 가장 시급한 문제를 세계의 관심의 중심으로 가져오는 특별한 기회입니다. 저는 여러분이 이 정상회담의 성공을 위해 기도해 주시기를 요청합니다.

And with regard to the primary value of human life, I reiterate a “no” to war, which destroys; it destroys everything, it destroys life and induces us to disregard it. And let us not forget that war is always a defeat. In this Jubilee year, I renew my appeal, especially to Christian governors, to do their utmost in the negotiations to bring all the ongoing conflicts to an end. Let us pray for peace in tormented Ukraine, in Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan and North Kivu.

그리고 인간 생명의 가장 중요한 가치와 관련하여, 저는 전쟁에 “No"라고 말합니다. 전쟁은 파괴합니다. 모든 것을 파괴하고, 생명을 파괴하고, 생명을 무시하도록 유도합니다. 전쟁은 항상 패배라는 것을 잊지 마십시오. 이 희년을 맞아, 저는 특히 기독교 주지사들에게 모든 갈등을 종식시키기 위한 협상에서 최선을 다해 줄 것을 호소합니다. 고통 받는 우크라이나, 팔레스타인, 이스라엘, 레바논, 미얀마, 수단, 북키부의 평화를 위해 기도합시다.
